Rifle Scopes Scope slip in Spuhr mount?

Hey there guys. So I recently mounted a Nightforce SHV 4-14 F1 in a Spuhr SP-3001 mount. I used rosin in the rings and torqued the ring screws to 25 inch pounds per NF spec, no loctite, air gap on both sides of ring. I’m using it on my Remington 700 16.5” in .308. After maybe 150ish rounds it appears that the scope has slipped a bit, as I can see a visible fresh ring of Rosen on the scope tube. Any tips on how I can secure the scope better? Only thing I can think of is maybe I applied too much Rosen, or applied it improperly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i've never used rosin with a spuhr and have never had an issue.

also...you should follow the Spuhr torque instruction NOT nightorce

Does the Spuhr manual call for rosin? Why use NF torque spec if you're using Spuhr mount?

Couple things aren't making sense, not sure why you did what you did. Just follow the instructions for the Spuhr, should be pretty straightforward.

Edit: Nevermind, manual does state rosin can be used.

The lines machined in the Spuhr are meant to be used with Rosin...

Fwiw mile high put my setup together. I noticed that it looks like they didn’t use Rosen to mount my a zco in a spuhr. 400rds and no slippage so far. It’s an ax in 6.5cm so not a huge amount of recoil. I would think 25in lbs would be enough torque. Maybe they loosened up or there was too much Rosen.

My Spuhr 5616 recommended rosin and 25 lb-in torque. I apply the rosin to fill in the gaps and leave a light dusting on the flats. You wouldn't want a build up on the flats since rosin is a compressible material. The rosin in the gaps will, in theory, spread the clamping force more evenly and not just to the flats. The only thing that you brought up that I wonder about is if there is too much rosin on the flats or if the rosin in the grooves was higher than the flats.

Edit: I have 1,500+ rounds through my SR-25 setup. No slips, no Loctite, no loosening of screws.

I've always wondered why the best scopes don't have a intergral pic rail, then attach with a pic to pic clamp.

It's almost like every other quality mount out there doesn't have any issue holding a scope without some hand applied rosin powder.....

Guess it's time to switch to 40 grit abrasive media to get your combo to stay put. Have you considered silver solder?

The Spuhr manual suggested a range, but said to follow the torque recommendation of your specific scope manufacturer. Nightforce specifies 25 inch pounds for the SHV, so that’s what I used, per Spuhr’s instructions.

Yes manual states rosin can be used but is not required. The Spuhr manual also states to use a torque spec of 15-25 inch pounds, but to go by the torque spec recommended by your specific scope manufacturer, as not to crush the tube. Nightforce specs 25 inch pounds for the SHV per the manual, so that is what I used.

Exactly, I have an old 22 scope that has a integral rail on the bottom, not a pic rail just a grooved rail and it
is pretty much what you just described.

I have SPUHR mounts on a .50, .416, .338, 6.8, and two 6.5s. Never used rosin and never had a scope come loose.

My Spuhr Mount has not moved after 1000s of rounds in my 6.5 or 300. I did use Rosen and I only torqued down to 20 in lbs. this is unusual for me. Interested in hearing the conclusion. I wish I could afford Spuhr for every rifle I own honestly.

Same here. I only torque to 18 in-lbs with Rosin. No slipping ever.

My Spuhr mount has not come loose, and I do not use rosin. I followed Spuhr torque, since they were lower than the scope manufacturer requirements.
