I was hoping the forum could offer some suggestions for a scope for my new AR. First, a little background on me and my project. I am not new to the AR/M-16 platform, but this is the 1st time I have set up a rifle with optics. When I originally embarked on putting a rifle together, I was hoping to put together something between a predator rifle and a varmint rifle(accurate, but still light enough to carry), while being on a budget. Through the help of a friend and some of his connections, I ended up with something nicer than I budgeted for, but a little different than I intended.

The rifle: Rock River Varmint A4 upper, 20" SS barrel, 1:8 twist, 5.56/.223, Hogue free-float handguard, Mohawk lower, Rock River 2-stage trigger, Magpul PRS stock. The barrel was lapped by the person that assembled it.

I believe this rifle will make an excellent target/varmint (bench)rifle, with an occasional short jaunt away from the truck for predators (seems to balance well at this point despite its weight). What do you think would be a good scope and set of rings/mount to explore the potential of this rifle? Despite an appreciation for the finer things in life, I would like to try and keep the scope under $500 if feasible, as I have other projects I am working on. But I can be flexible. I need something that works, but it doesn't have to be top-end. BTW, this is my initial attempt at trying to learn long-range shooting techniques. I would eventually like to pick up a .308 bolt rifle to continue with this endeavor.

As much as I would like to spend the big bucks, these are my initial thoughts:
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44, BDC or Plex reticle
Nikon Monarch 4-16x42, Nikoplex reticle
Bushnell 4200 4-16x40, multi-X reticle
Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40, Nikoplex reticle, not sure I like 1/8 moa adjustments
Burris XTR rings, (what height would I need for my scope??)
Warne rings
Super Sniper rings

I am not sure what would constitute over-scoping or under-scoping this rifle. Of course I know it's not always the arrow...it's the Indian. Also, if you have any suggestions for a bipod and a durable, but not overly expensive case. I am thinking a Harris bipod and a case from Midway at this point. Any thoughts on Keng's Versa-Pod? I thought they looked pretty nice when I saw them at SHOT last year.

Your suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

I have no different considerations when scoping an AR than I do when scoping any other rifle (other than mounting).

Regardless of the platform you need to define what you want to do with the rifle, then pick a repeatable reliable scope with the most features you desire in your price range.

An AR you will need 1.2-1.5" rings to get a good cheekweld and you will probably need to get the front ring forward of your receiver to get the proper eye relief.

The under $500 part would have me recommend you get a SWFA SS 10X or 16X scope and a Burris PEPR mount.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

Like I said, I may be flexible on price. $500 is a target for me. I know the SS 10x is a good scope, but I was really hoping for a variable. Since I only have one rifle right now, it's hard to define exactly what I want to do with it. I live in the wide open spaces of AZ, so there may be an opportunity to bag some coyotes. I think a fixed 10x would be a problem if one snuck in close. Otherwise, I mainly intend to use the rifle for rabbits (we have a lot of them here) and prairie dogs when I am in the Dakotas, as well as for paper punching. So I guess versatility is good.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

Oh, had you filled out your profile I'd have known you were in state.

I'd find a Leupy VXIII or MK4 PR 3.5-10 if I were were limited to $500ish and wanted a variable.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

Sobrbiker,
Sorry about that...I now have some basic info. available. Thank you for your input. Do you think that 10x is sufficient for little critters at long distances? Otherwise, I say no problem for man and deer-sized targets. Although I recall that mirage became a problem around 12-14x last time I shot P-dogs.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

have you looked into Mueller optics? that will put you well under your 500 bux mark. also glass is incredible in these, they track well, and have superb customer service.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

I have the Vortex Viper you listed on a RRA 24" Varminter and am very pleased. It is an outstanding value. However if hunting small varmints such as Prairie Dogs you may find the "BDC" a bit course for long range varmint hunting.
Great scope for the money. I will be buying more Vortex products.

The "BDC", learn from my mistake. I have not tried it on Varmints yet but one one inch orange stick on targets it is too course. Great scope though. I'll be taking it to the dessert tomorrow to shoot steel targets.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

I have a 3-9 Zeiss Conquest on my RRA 24" Varmint and love the clarity. A year ago i sent it to Zeiss and had them install the Target Turrets. Very happy with it.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

3-9x50 Zeiss with turrets and a Z600 reticle. The clarity of the class is incredible, and sample scopes can be had from CameraLand for about 550 shipped.

Mine doesn't have turrets on it, it is a sample, I paid 549.95 for it and you wouldn't know it's a sample other than "SAMPLE" stamped on the end of the box.

It tracks straight and true, the glass is impeccable (easily on par with my 3 NF's that cost 2.5x's more) and it's light and easy to fit on a hunting rifle. My scope lives on a 7 SAUM model 7 that I hunt with, and it does very well there.

For a hundred bucks and a couple weeks wait you can send it back to zeiss and they will install the turrets for you.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

A red dot scope should work fine for 'yotes up to 300yds. The benefit is you can also use it for CQB. I have a Aimpoint Comp M4S on my CQB AR and IOR-Valdada 1,5-8x36 my mid-range AR. The IOR at 1,5x can be used for CQB and that's why I like this scope.

Re: Scope Suggestion for AR

I have two AR's. The first one is a DPMS 16" barrel. It has a nikon 3x9x40 buckmaster strictly used for coyotes. The other is a Colt A3-Hbar with a 24" Heavy match barrel it has a nikon 4x16x42 Monarch on it. I use this one for everything. The scopes work fantastic on both.

I didn't know that, I'm going to look into getting that taken care of, thanks.
