I have a .204 ruger. I bought leupold dovetail one piece base and rings. The height is medium on the rings. The scope has a AO, that being its barely touching the barrel. The next size rings puts it way off the barrel causing to high cheek weld. Is there something I can do, maybe shim rings a little? What do you all think?

Re: Scope touching barrel remedy.

Taller rings (maybe look to a different manufacturer) and an adjustable cheek piece. Triad makes a stock pack with accessory velcro strips that are used to elevate the pack to the desired height.

Move your scope forward just a bit if you can get away with it with the ring locations and eye relief. I have one that I had to do that with and can just slide a piece of paper between the two - it hasn't caused any trouble for about 20 years.

Millet makes some dovetail base/rings also...may consider looking at them. It's possible that they may have an in-between size that will work.

The other option is going with a different base/ring setup all together (1913 type). It's a more expensive method but you'll have fare more options available...different manufacturer rings, different height bases in addition to different height rings, more fore and aft adjustment for eye relief.

Going with a Picatinny (1913) setup seems expensive until you use it...then you'll think why you ever used anything else.

I would suggest cutting some shims out of a coke can and slide them under the bases to see just how much elevation change you need.(done that in a pinch to get a guys rifle to make 1000.) With some barrel profiles just a half inch foreward will get you there as well.

What Stang said. Just did the same with set of dual dovetails to get the low rings to work. Keep the scope as low as you can. I have always used Diet Coke cans for shim stock...... they are thinner.
