Guys... I am looking for a scope for a .338 LM... Rifle has a 20 MOA base... I am wanting to get out PAST 1500 yards..

I have look out in the WTB Section... but nothing yet..

What scopes would you all reccommend that will get out to that range and FURTHER... but that are still dependable...repeatable...and will last...

I am wanting a MILDOT or ranging type reticle...

Let me know what you all reccommend...

Lets stay with a price of $800 to $1200.. If we can get a GOOD scope CHEAPER that would be PERFECT

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

After Zeroing... I will still probably need around 50 MOA...

I have 37 MOA or so left on a .308... which is ONLY good to about 1300... soo going off those numbers for a .339LM... I would need 20 MOA more or so to get out past 1500 to 2000....

Matt.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Dave,

Yes.. I am to... only thing is I am like most... I have the rifle coming in next week... I am just not sure about waiting on the scope... I am VERY impatient.... I know thats my fault....

I like the looks of the Vortex... I just WONDER IF it will have the MOA adjustments needed for SERIOUS long range shooting.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

I have the Mueller Tac II which is a rebadged Sightron IIB. It is cheaper but still has nice glass, clean mildot reticle, and tracks true even after 4 years of use.

No one here will say anything bad about Sightrons. They are a very solid brand. People may wish they were more up with the times like FFP and such but dollar for dollar, Sightrons give one of the best values around.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

CanPopper,

I looked at the S3.. it DOES say it has 100 MOA adjustment Elevation.

But if you do a search on reviews from snipercentral... it states they ONLY had 50 MOA from the factory....

NOT wanting to plug another sight or review but... just wanted to make sure its the same:

http://www.snipercentral.com/s3sightron.htm

I like the scope... just want to make sure that IF i went with it.. I am NOT back in the same boat of only have 36 to 40 MOA left....

Any experience with them... are they able to handle and hold up to the use?

Thanks

I have had a SIII. They are very nice optics. They are solid and have good glass. I would go back to them if they offered a mil/mil model.

Lots of info here

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Nightforce NXS 3-15 has 110MOA internal adjustment available
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 has 100MOA internal adjustment available
US Optics SN3 has about 70MOA to 100MOA depending on setup? Someone correct me if im wrong
Schmidt and Bender PM2 are also used on LR setups.
Leupold Mark 4 should work out as well

Generally larger diameter tubes allow more elevation.

Thats the order in which I would be inclided to travel, you may feel different,

I chose the NXS line first because it offers good value for money. USO second because i know they are awesome but i cant buy them here. S&B make quality scopes but i would always chose an NF due to prices of S&Bs. The old Loopy mk4 is a proven beast and will work for you but for me its last on the list.

What you are seeing on SC is a review of the old model. The scope has been revised since this review. I know because it was my scope that was reviewed in that article.

Let me know when one of these shows up for $800 - $1200

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Leupold MK4 16X has 140 moa of erector travel. Love mine. Put it on a 45-60 moa base, and you are easily past 2000 yards. Mine is on a 45 moa base, and I have 118 moa available from 100 yd zero. Used market usually about $800-900.

No firsthand experience, but the Sightron 30mm SIII series fixed power 10X MMD, 16X MMD, and 20X MMD are advertised to have 150 moa erector travel.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

mm128 they are nice optics. In the end I sold it off with the rest of my MOA/mil scopes for mil/mil options. However the glass is top notch and overall build quality is very good. Like I said before, if Sightron were to offer a mil/mil option I'd own another one.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

MontanaMarine,

I have looke at the Mark 4 16X.... Like it alot... but I just DONT want a FULLY dedicated 16X power...

I know... I am picky... just like being able to dial up or down in the power range...

Matt.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

The Leupold Mk4 4.5x14 has ~95 MOA of adjustment. In the old days all the other variable power Mark 4's were a little less, however, this is changing with the some of the newer long range 6.5x20 having 100 MOA plus or minus.

That said, unless you get a good deal on the Leupold Mk4 (i.e. used or old stock) I have migrated to Nightforce after a friend left one on my TRG42 in 338LM.

Woops missed the budget part!

What about a Bushnell 4200 ELITE 6-24 x 50 Tactical with turrets, combined with an MOA base and possibly even tapered rings... im sure they exist.

I read somewhere about this setup being used with success on a 98Bravo.

I know its not a scope with a TON of moa as the OP has asked, however with the stated budget its hard to find a good quality optic with that much elevation for that price.

I have at least read that this combo has worked well for others.

I knew MontanaMarine would chime in with the MK4 16X

.....which is exactly what I was thinking as well, it may be the perfect application. Lets face it, you won't need a optic that goes down in the lower magnification ranges (3-5X) for the 338LM. You may wish you had more than 16X at times with the 338 but 16X will do just fine.

Yeah I have seen some screaming deals on used NF for only a little more than his budget.

I've seen people using the IOR fixed 16X for this, nice glass and reticle for not a lot of money. A used IOR 3-18 is an idea BUT they have VERY short eye relief and I bet if mounted on a magnum you would end up with a black eye pretty quick...

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Thanks guys for ALL the info...

I have thought about the 16x... but while doing zeroing and load development just thought some type of variable would be great..

I am kinda leaning towards the Sightron S3 in 6-24-50mm Mildot.

It seems to have ALL the features that I am looking for and want... From the reviews here and on the web it seems to be a VERY tough scope..

Actually you would be surprised. I had one mounted up on my 300 weatherby and it worked just fine. These are a good option also.
Truthfully I'm looking to get another one of these. I really did like the scope.

I've never messed with Trijicons but from everything that people tell me they make a decent scope.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

So buy an LRS until the PST's come out and write a review on both.
I love spending other peoples money.

Course, there is always the Viper 6.5-20x50, 500 bones from LO. Sell it when the PST's become available.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Sightron SIII tactical any of the fixed powers will get you 150 MOA adjustment range more than any scope out there real nice glass and with in the budget. I got a 10 X 42

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Frank,

Looked at it... but think I have decided on the 6-24-50... Still has 100 MOA... and with the 20 MOA base... there should be PLENTY to get me to 2K yards..

Matt.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

Huckleberry,

I looked at it and the Mark 4 16x...

Just wanted to stay away from a FIXED high magnification scope...

Kinda think I have settled on the 6-24-50 MILDOT Sightron S3..

Seems the S3 is VERY hard to beat even at DOUBLE its price...

It is a SOLID built scope with some VERY impressive reviews.

Matt.

Re: Scope with a TON of MOA... Help!

You really cannot go wrong with the Sightron SIII's. As it was mentioned above, the scope in the SniperCentral article was the older model. I've owned both versions, one of the older 3.5-10x44s, as well as a couple of the newer 3.5-10s and a 6-24. The newer models have more adjustment, better eye relief, and larger turrets.

I have a 6-24x50 mil dot SIII on my 24" heavy barrel AR, and I have been extremely happy with the scope. I have yet to find anything comparable under $1k, and Sightron customer service is second to none.

I have an ior 3-18, I really like it but I'm not sure I can recommend it just yet. Their fixed powers I can though, as far as I can tell they are bulletproof.

Decision is MADE....

I am going to be the proud owner of a Sightron S3 MilDot 6-24-50mm...

They are currently being built and will be at my door in a couple of weeks.
