I'm buying a Remington 700 BDL (irons sights) in 30.06 for deer and medium size game. I want to put hand detachable mounts on it for quick field addition or removal of the scope. Please recommend well made hand detachable mounts that would maintain the zero, and the proper height of the mounts so that a scope with a 42 objective would barely clear the iron sights. I prefer two piece mounts over the one piece rail, and American made mounts would be a great plus.

Thank you.

There are a few ways to approach this project. One of the issues you find is that a scope objective comes so close to the rear sight, the makes you use higher rings and can end up looking like a M16 handle.

Talley makes some nice rings and an option of a rear swap peep sight. This would be a complete package, but you have to stow your peep mount somewhere as not to lose it.

I went with Warne bases and quick detachable rings (US made in Oregon, steel) they are very similar to the Leupold QRW rings and work the same. I then found an old school Redfield flip up peep (from their old Jr bases) and drill and tapped it onto the back of the rear sight. It takes some fitting, but a fun and easy home project.

So I removed the factory Rear ramp and plugged the holes with some aftermarket plugs. This allowed me to use low rings, keeping a good cheek weld. The rear peep flips down when not in use and I just flip it up if I remove the scope. The aperture of the rear peep is rather large, but just right for hunting in the Forrest/woods.

I am away from home but will post pics at the end of the week. This was done on the same BDL/30-06, but my scope is currently a Redfield 3-9x40. Also worked when I had a VX3 3.5-10.

OK back in town,

I have a circa 90's BDL in 30-06, I took off the original stock as it is flawless. I have a few stock I use, but my favorite is a CDL takeoff. Has the recoil pad and straight comb.

Anyway, I also replaced the front sight with a newer 1 piece front, and no bell to get snagged.

Removed the rear sight and plugged them with generic 6-48 plugs I got from Numrich

I picked up a NOS Redfield rear peep from ebay, they can be had from $15-30, just depends as they dont make them anymore.

You will need a 2-56 tap, Grainger has them part number 5TWC3, cant remember the drill bit size but I am sure it can be found on the net.

I had to get some flat countersunk screws as the factory 2-56 would hit the bolt as it cycled. You may have to stone the very corner of the bolt to clear the screw, but it will not effect headspace as there is normally a small gap there as I can fit two pieces of paper in the gap.

So as you can see in the pics, hunt with a scope, if the rifle tumbles and scope takes a hit, simply remove the scope and flip up the sight. Like I mentioned, with the flip up you are talking 50-100 yard hunting at most, but if you are miles into the forrest, it will do.

Here are some more pics

Now I did this at home with hand tools, you can take it to a smith and have him remove a few thousands off the rear face of the rear base, this will allow you to use the original blue screws and have somewhat of a neater appearance. Mine is fine as this rifle is purpose built and gets some good use.

LaRue Tactial Mounts

I know a lot of people that I know and have heard of are running mounts from LaRue Tactial (QD Scope Mount). Everyone that I know of is experiencing little to no point of impact shift when the mount and scope are removed and the replaced on the rifle. I'll include a link to one of their particular models and you can take it from there. Don't hesitate to call LaRue and talk to them about what you're looking for in a mount. Their costumer service is top notch and their customer's reviews of the products and service speaks for itself. I hope this helps a little. I can't personally recommend them because I didn't find out about LaRue until after I got my last rifle set up. I went with a unimount from Badger Ordnance but you well need a tool (socket/ratchet or wrench) to install and remove mount.
