scored a ticket to america i will be in Oregon and California to visit some family friends. I will be there for the first two weeks of september any chance I can go Bear Hunting In either of these places. Its been a lifelong dream to score a bear so any local knowledge about how i could do it would be great

you cannot kill ants in CA so i bears are definitely out if they even have them there i'm sure.
you could always just cross the border into Canada and kill a bear or Canuk

I was thinking that you could kill bears in Ca but only if:
1)they attacked you 1st
2)you unsuccessfully tried to get away
3)you then used a stern tone of voice and asked them to leave
4)you pretended to play dead (as opposed to what was about to happen)
5)then, and only then, as a last resort, you could use a stick covered in fire ants to dispatch the bear
This method may also work on Canuck (although I could be wrong on one or two points).

I thought you had to spray yourself down with pepper spray first. You know bears have a pallet for a good steak too.

The bear population is actually pretty high here in California the last few years and those going for them have been pretty successful. If you don't know the lay of the land I would say be prepared to pay someone to guide you. You can find many reputable guides on the California DFG site listed above. Also, be prepared to pay out the nose for out of state license and tags.

They kill some huge bears in California. Usually it is done using hounds. You could also shoot up to Alaska as their season is definitely open at that time. I think I remember the Cali bear season is only open for the month of November but could be wrong / outdated.

Neither state will have an open season during the time you will be here. Oregon starts Aug 1st and Cali Archery starts Aug 18th and General/Rifle starts at different times depending on which zone.
Both states have great bear hunting though (Contrary to what all the cali haters say)

@ DirtyDave or CL&RR- you might know this, but why does the DFG want the skull? What part do they use for "scientific testing"? I know here in AZ our AZGF (Game and Fish) welcomes coyote jaw's so they can keep track of where they are, how big they are, etc... Just curious if you knew mainly.

You can DIY Black Bears in Alaska but I'd try hiring a guide. The boat based hunts in the SE part of the state are awesome. You should be able to go on a fully outfitted Black bear hunt for $4000 or so. Much less if you DIY.

Just a thought on exos post my friend does this in Australia, he's an enviromental scientist of some sort. From a skull you can get age, sex and diet and any other health issues the bear may have been suffering.

washington has a lot of bears, had one in my backyard a couple years ago and I am in the outskirts of town, cops asked me if i s shot it when I called them, seemed disapointed that I didn't.
Bear season in my area is august 1st to nov 15th so it would be possible for you to hunt one.

So the good news is I've found a trip and am sorting myself out with a foriegners hunting lisence and tags for Oregon couldn't have done it without the help of you guys. And thanks heaps to longspring for the extremly generous offer to tag along.
