Dont know how I feel about this, have Seals become too celebrated to use and possibly lose in missions in todays culture? Does the dad have a point? I seem to remember being told if I got killed that would be that fam would get SGLI and nothing else would be said. I dont know on this one, seems like we are getting on the road to second guessing the military and in my opinion when it comes to ops they should have a free hand to do what needs doing unless they start losing the war. in this article they state about 30 civilians were killed, this is bullshit because everyone of the ISIS is a civilian, not one of these groups are state actors so every one of them is eligible for on the spot execution along with anyone supporting them.

I think that a lot of the problems we're seeing, like this, is also why we're seeing so much anti-cop sentiment. 24 hour news cycles where the idiot talking heads don't "report" news any more. They have to get every so called expert on TV to talk about why this or that failed and then over analyze everything in the name of ratings. Just like this case, boots were sent into harm's way. At some point, a SEAL was called home to Valhalla. As long as the raid was deemed necessary on a military level then the out come is what it is. Of course shitty planning is not what I want but that only goes so far.
What do people want, to just give up? I feel we as a nation are broken if we are unwilling to accept. Sacrifices made by others on our behalf.
I believe that this man should be celebrated. He should have a memorial in his home town. If he has children they should be taken care of. And not just by the government who put him in that situation but by all of us who NEEDED him in that situation.
One of my hero's is Pat Tillman, i was shocked at his death. But i feel his mother did him a disservice and actually drug his name through the mud a little. That mans father is doing the same. I understand grieving, but the fact is two fold. One every time you say good bye to someone it could be the last time you ever see them, everyone should be prepared for that. 2nd is that this man was the tip of the spear and that is always the bloodiest part.

Nothing doesn't get AAR'd and the Chinese-self-criticism-drill in that community is harsh. Not sure what an AAR is but I support an internal investigation. One must learn from mistakes, even from success.

Pat Tillman's mom gave the Bush administration hell, and as I said above I personally believe she tarnished her own son's legacy in doing so.

When my friend lost her Marine son in Iraq, his squad mates visited her and filled her in on details when they got back, not sure if anyone had a chance to do that with this dad yet. Or even if they are allowed. It helped her a lot, but she is still a wreck til this day, understandably. The country needs an education on strategy and tactics.

If something is strategic it should involve the civilian leadership. Strategy is the goal - what is it that we intend this war to produce. We have not gone to war since WWII with a clearly defined strategy. If you don't define what your objective is how can you get there?

Tactics are the processes you use to obtain your strategic goal. The military, as the experts, should control the tactical operations to meet the strategic goal they have been assigned. As long as the tactics are lawful the civilians don't need to be involved in how the sausage is made - just take your orders and get it done, do not fail.

Some means though are at the same time a strategic and a tactical operation. Nukes, nuclear subs, nuke cruise missiles are so destructive their authorization of use is a matter of strategic policy

Thing is SEALs/Spec Ops, like nukes, can be strategic.

Killing a head of state is a strategic decision.

The op in question took place in a country we are not currently at war in. Granted its a failed state that shelters people that have declared war on us but its not a light decision to send troops into a country we are not currently involved in.

I guess these issues would be clearer if our sackless congress would do its job - declare war when war is necessary, make a clearly defined strategy and designate responsibility......but if they did that someone might be on the record and held accountable for failure. This way they get to point fingers and the price is paid by the 05 that wasn't allowed to plan the op he was tasked with and some American kids get killed wondering what was the end game of what they are doing - where is the finish line?

IIRC, there were 13 other missions the same night they killed Bin Laden. That is just what they do. Depending on the Team he was in, all he would do is direct action AKA go in, kill your target, go home.

You cannot be at war with a particular country if the enemy isnt claimed to a specific country but instead a religion or mindset that expands multiple countries. we are at war, most of them are civilians that volunteered to fight, and they dont wear uniforms so they all can be listed as civilian casualties as another Hider said.

My personal thoughts on this stuff, sorry for the loss as it is never easy even if the cause was for a greater good. Get the media out of the military and go back to the kardasians and leave it up to the people that spent there entire lives devoted to the military and the cause for the protection of the USA to worry about those kinds of actions, mistakes, and victories. as previously stated, these types of individuals even break apart successful missions to find out where they can get better because if they dont then it will cost someone there life or the whole squads life. .....but its outside the scope of a Lt Colonel's decision making realm to decide "Hey lets go get some drug lords next weekend" and plan his own trip to the Mexico.

Again the civilian side has to define a clear strategy than issue the order to bring it about using the tactics that professionals believe will reach the objective.

As an example - The Strategy for Afghanistan should have been -

1. Kill or capture Osama Bin Ladin and while searching for him inflict as much damage on the the ability for Al Quaida to conduct operations as possible. When Bin Ladin is dead or captured quickly depart.

That's it, there is a measurable means to determine the goal and when it is met. Let the military determine how to get there.

Instead we are embroiled in a never ending war or will leave without being able to say we attained our goal. "War on Terrorism" is never ending.

The only point I clarified beyond what you said is that If the mil is going to be used in a country we are not at war with formerly it should be decided by a civilian/military union not just an 05 (Lt Colonel) going Colonel Kurtz.

You are correct Pakistan was an operation done without involving the host nation (as far as we know) but because it was a Cabinet decision it had an accountability trail.

Who knows what happens we don't know about. The recent revelation of ATF black funding through untaxed tobacco sales sounds a mess, Iran/Contra has a certain odor about it, I'm getting skeptical that our drug issues are brought about without one political party or the other, probably both, funding themselves at the cost of destroying families and Individuals.

The fact that his son operated out of DEVGRU already shows that he was a true 1%...a top tiered operator who did lots of things that was never discussed in the open. Things happen and lucky bullets from crappy AK's can find there mark sometimes no matter how good you are. The reason this is even an issue is that the father is willing to say anti-Trump statements which puts the press in high-gear to show that Trump is a bad president and this is just one more thing that proves it.

With all due respect to these men, the drive to be "The Best or the best" often come from a huge ego as well as a desire to serve. Ive seen it in work related situations. The bigger the ego the bigger the problem/situation.

Every actual Seal (and most soldiers, and Marines) has been very Humble if measured against their accomplishments. Your assertion that these elite Americans do what they do because of some kind of ego problem shows and your conflation of them with some jerk you may have worked with once shows just what a doosch you are.

Still doesn't explain why its just the squids talking, maybe the Navy has relaxed standards due to high turnover? All I know is you don't see that type of behavior from the other branches, or as much of that type of behavior.
