So I just got a gunslinger II eberlestock and I ran into a little 'problem'. The rifle compartment isn't as secure as I thought it would be. With my normal sized rifles, I can put them in there easily but they are wobbly and slide around. Am I missing something, or how are you guys securing the rifle in there so it doesn't slide around and wobble?

The 50" 338 rifle fits in there too, and can be closed off with the scabbard top, but it fits really awkwardly and has the same 'wobbly' problem. The top to the scabbard doesn't really do anything since its very lightweight, and the rifle really doesn't feel secure in there.

Overall the pack feels really sturdy and high quality. I will do a full review of it in a separate thread later, but I just wanted to get this figured out before prematurely judging.

I thought it had some kind of straps on the inside that would pull and secure it to one side or something. You know kind of like a good bow case. If not, then I don't know. I am glad you are posting this because I was about to buy one of these and IMO $300 for a fancy bag should be perfect and should ^^^do a damn good job of securing and protecting the stuff inside, otherwise it's just an overpriced bag no different then any other flavor. After seeing some on the Internet though I had high hopes for them. I can't wait for your review.

Don't get discouraged just yet, most other things on there are spot on. Lets see what suggestions people have... I might be missing something obvious!

With the compression straps tightened and locked I'm suprised it can move around much at all. Mine seems to grab onto the stock really well and doesn't move much at all. Actually have to tug on it a little to get it out (Especially if it's on my back). The top scabbard is just extra security. My stock is a McMillan A5. Maybe some of the more sleek line stocks are leaving more room in there?? Of course, I'm not sure what you application is though, and I'm sure that can make a difference. I'm not running military obstacle courses or anything with mine. Just range and LE SWAT.

You know, I have not even tried filling the pack up fully and using the compression straps. This is why i was waiting till i fully utilized the pack before reviewing it. I'll see how the compression straps will help

Re: securing rifle in eberlestock gunslinger II

I have a lodrag, but yes, the compression straps cinched down plus gear in the pack lock down my rifle such that it doesn't seem to shift at all. I'm sure it's probably the same with the GS2.

The optional aluminum frame helps the compression straps work if the pack is lightly loaded for whatever reason though.

Re: securing rifle in eberlestock gunslinger II

If you're not putting items in the pack and using the compression straps then you're not using it as it was intended. I've had both the GS2 and the LoDrag which both secured just fine when loaded with gear.

I load my GS2 into my cruiser trunk daily. My XM-3 stays locked solid with the compression straps and the top buckle between the scope and the receiver. I don't use the top cover.

My experience was the same after I bought my x3. it wobbled around and I was worried about it but once I put all my gear in and tightened the straps it was good to go.

Re: securing rifle in eberlestock gunslinger II

Thats was the fix. I never had a bookbag with compression straps so didn't realize they were a 'requirement'. My last bookbag I just tightened the rifle down and was done.

After tightening the compression straps, everything is solid and everything feels secure. Its an 'extra' step that is required to be taken, but its worth the benefits of stability.

Have any of you guys had any issues with ripping inside the scabbard? Taking all my rifles in and out, I realized how much sharp metal is scraping against the insides. Everything from the jagged scope turrets, level, bipod, rail, magazine and etc have semi sharp metal corners.
I'm just wondering if this has been a problem for anyone that uses these alot, and if I should be more careful. The 338 takes a little bit of muscle to fully wiggle in there.

Re: securing rifle in eberlestock gunslinger II

I find that the rifle goes in and out the smoothest when the compression straps are loosened and the bag is held up by the handle at the opening of the scabbard.

Bipod seems to be a little sticky but it's the rubber feet on the harris bipods Im using.

I think it will be a heck of a lot of use before anything fails so enjoy it

Re: securing rifle in eberlestock gunslinger II

I've had my GSII for over a year now. Ive used the shit out it in matches and hunting. It's been on trips to TX, MT, WY, and CO. It's been used, not pampered and placed on a shelf as a decoration.

From what I've seen, most people are clueless about how to properly adjust, dawn, and wear a pack. If you don't know, spend a few minutes researching on how to adjust each section and what order to tighten in. It makes a huge differnce.

As for the rifle being loose, I've never had a issue with it, even without the straps cinched down. But, I always have gear in pack, it's never empty. My rifle(s) fit great. I've been damn near upside down before and my rifle hasn't ever come out of the scabbord (I dont use the top cover).

I wouldn't worry too much about ripping the pack inside the scabbord. It's a pack. It's meant for heavy field use. It's going to get a few marks on it. It'll hold up im sure.

On both mine I've never even worried about it and I've got a GAP-10 with all kinds of trimmings. My packs work double duty as range and match bags.
