Self Timing Brakes

Hey gents, I know this is a real toss up, but opinions on self timing brakes. I've used the APA and MPA brakes. This will be for a PRS type rifle in 6.5mm.
Here's my list:
Stick with what I know and works well
APA or MPA

Or try one of these
Area 419 Hellfire
PVA Mad Scientist
Insite Arms Heathen

For me it's kind of a toss up. I'm sure they all work just about equally as well, but I'm curious to hear if you guys have tried 2 or 3 of these and your thoughts. If you've only had one, tell me what you like and what you don't like about it?

I have the area 419 hellfire and love the ease of installation and it reduces recoil more than my silencerco harvester. Plus the owner was great to deal with fast shipping. Way easier to spot impacts with it, even over the suppressor.

Johns a solid dude that makes a hell of a product. I will say just about every brake will be more efficient than a suppressor. Suppressors will have a longer recoil impulse where as almost every brake out there is more of an instantaneous feeling.

The Mad Scientist works very well and directs the blast more away from the shooter.

Have several pva brakes myself. Very happy with them. I pretty much leave with one everytime I'm at the pva shop.

I have 2 APA Lil Bastard brakes. They work well.

I just ordered a Area 419 brake. Lookong forward to shooting it myself!

PVA Mad scientist is what I use, very easy to install, superb finishing, very good for recoil reduction.

Rob how would you compare the PVA to an APA brake? In regarded to sleepy recoil? I don't really care about the "back blast."

I hate muzzle brakes. That said, I have two PVA Mad Scientist brakes. They flat out work and don't blast the shooter.

The Area419 HellFire gets my vote after having the APA, PVA and JEC. All of the brakes mentioned so far are very effective, but the installation of the HellFire is stupid easy. The blast pattern of the Heathen and HellFire are along the same lines and the PVA is completely perpendicular to the barrel/shooter. The blast from the APA is definitely the most harsh and if you shoot next to anyone they will hate you.

I have ran 2 identical CTRs side by side, both 20" 6.5 Creed, factory stocks, one with an APA Little Bastard, and one with an Area 419 Hellfire. Recoil wise they are very close. The LB is WAY more obnoxious on the noise level around the shooter, gas, dust and crap blowing everywhere. The Hellfire is definitely quieter around the shooter, but gives nothing up to recoil moderating. The Hellfire is also a lot easier to install, easier to time, and has more options to plug into the adapter. My opinion is the Hellfire wins between these two.

The Area 419 is a great system, and the guys are area 419 are awesome. The one thing I will mention is that the brake destroys who ever you are shooting next too. Even standing away from a friend shooting one in his 6.5 creedmoor I was getting pounded. I went with the Insite brake, port design is less intrusive to other shooters while still keeping me on target. I shoot a 6 comp match so recoil isn't really a thing. But the other shooters around me do not have quite the negative response as the the other port designs. They are all will work great, the area 419 has collars to attach many popular suppressors, the others are fine if you shoot a direct thread. I do not think you can really go wrong with this list, if you plan to shoot a thunder beast I think the area 419 is the way to go.

Here's my thing. I don't care about anyone hating me for running a brake. I care that it's effective.

On brakes like the APA, MPA and Mad Scientist that screw on and then have a nut that jams against the shoulder - After shooting quite a bit and getting some carbon up in there, have you guys found it difficult to remove the brake? I know both my APA and MPA brakes were a pain in the ass to take off after shooting 1000 or so rounds.

Next question- is the Hellfire easier to remove than brakes like an APA/MPA/PVA?

Removing my PVA Mad Scientist is a breeze, just the two wrenches and a little, just a little of elbow grease and it's loose in a fraction of a second.

Removing my pva brakes are as easy as when I got them. I haven't found carbon to affect them.

Thanks Gents. I ended up with the Area 419 Hellfire. Its going on a 6.5 Creed. Excited to compare it to the other 2 brakes I've used.

I've had great luck with the Hellfire. Hard to overstate the brilliance of the timing system. Can adapters are real slick too.

I was kinda forced (when I wanted one) to get the Heathen with my factory DT .308 since nobody else (I preferred) had a self timing brake with 3/4x24 in stock. Dropped my poi by .5 mil but groups stayed the same to slightly better - it's a great brake - reduced recoil noticeably and the guys beside me didn't complain.

You won't be disappointed with the Hellfire. Jon's system is beautifully designed. Tool-less install and removal, easy to index, and excellent craftsmanship.

I too 2nd the area 419 system. Absolutely awesome brake good choice to go with. Let us know what you think of it over the others you have shot with!

Took it out and threw it on a buddies rifle today. It was very good. I like the tapered attachment method. The design, to me, is better than the other self timing brakes out there. As for recoil reduction, it felt the same or very similar to the MPA and APA brakes I've used. Its good stuff 10/10 would recommend!
