Selling off my collection

After 40 years of collecting I am getting old and need to really start thinging out my collection of rifles.

The only ones I plan on keeping are my ones that were built by Robert Gradous

I really do not want to list, package, go through my FFL dealer to sell all of my rifles one at a time.

Auction?
Consignment through a dealer? Any recomendation on one?
Cabelas?

What would you recomend as my best way of selling a large volume guns.

unless you're willing to sell to a dealer really damn cheap, there just isn't a good way to sell a collection quickly and easily


and even IF you're willing to sell for pennies on the dollar, it's hard to say if people will want all of them

Years ago I sold a few firearms on consignment through a local gunsmith/dealer. It took a while but was hassle free. I don't remember what his cut was but it was not too bad.

If you have a large collection, you may have some bargaining power concerning consignment fees.

Depending on what you have, I'd honestly give the Hide your first shot, then see what's left over. Obviously rifles and pistols will take highest priority here, but at least you'd have a group of people that you'd be less likely to have sales problems with. The biggest issue is deciding whether you want top dollar or quick liquidation. You'd probably get top dollar on auction sites, though you may have to pay a fee for use. If you're going for quick, reliable sales, there's no other group of folks I'd rather buy or sell guns to than Hide members.

I'd list them on applicable online forums. For instance, sell target rifles on Accurate Shooter, "tactical" rifles here, and hunting rifles over at 24 hr campfire.

If you have the extra time on your hands, sell them yourself. You will save/make a lot more $$$. And you can always transfer through a local FFL if need be just pass the fee onto the buyer.

The easiest method would be to sit down and make a nice clear list of each gun, options, builder and asking price. Then shoot pics of the rifle/package and hold them. Do this for each one...set the list up in the firearms section of the hide and await pic requests.
I recently put a K80 shotgun package up on consignment at a "high end" shop..I went and picked it up as it was not moving and I wanted to shoot a local tournament - it looked liked shit! Finger marks everywhere...a few dings...somehow a barrel out of the 4-barrel set was found sitting on a bench? Either way...last time I will consign anything..I keep my shit close and sell it myself..even if it means less traffic.

You can always attend any local gun shows in your area depending on your time and availability. It's a long shot but can be one of the options.

put up listings here and if one sells you just have to pay to have your FFL send it to their FFL. the fee will be cheaper than having it sit in their store and them taking a percentage.

if you have a large amount of firearms i would call the ATF and ask them about the legality of selling all of your firearms without being a dealer. tell them you plan to send the firearms from a dealer to their dealer if out of city/state.

i just saw your in saudi arabia so if thats true then you would want to make sure you abide by any local laws there if thats where you are selling them of course.

selling them yourself will always be the best way to insure you get the most money for your firearms. here in Tx i sold 2 pistols i didn't want/need anymore and 3 rifles. for the pistols i wanted to insure they were legally allowed to own a firearm so i went with them to the gun store and for a $20 fee they did the back ground check (other shops may have different prices). legally i didn't have too but i just wanted to make sure and anyone who apposed the idea meant they might have a reason to and i didn't sell them anything.

if you have C&Rs use gunboards.com,tactical here,22s rimfire central maybe. as said,accurate shooter,campfire. gunbroker is also a good option. you must have pic posting skills to use any site on the web. walking around at a local show is an option. likely wouldn't get as much as broker. consigning is usually a hose job in the making. and,many types of guns will sell here besides tacticals.

As I live in Maine too and have dealt with Cabelas in Scarborough I have to say stay away from them to sell your guns. The reasion being I went in one day with a Sako Finnfire Range and was going to trade for a Benelli M4 they had. I went to the gun library and told them what I wanted to do and let them check out my rifle. I didnt tell them what it was or anything about it. After 45 min of walking around I came back in too see what their offer was. They give a "cash" price and a "trade" price when ever you look into trading or selling. He handed me a peice of paper with $400 cash or trade written on it. I must of looked floored but I calmly asked the man how he came up with that price. He said based on "the others they have sold over the years" he came up with that price. So I asked how many Sako Finnfire Ranges that Cabelas have sold over the years. The man said what, and at that moment I knew he didnt even know what the rifle was. I asked him do you know what this rifle is and he said no. So when I asked how he was able to compare it with other he has sold with out even knowing the make and model he said by pictures of other guns that looked similar. I said thank you for your time and took my rifle home. Two days later it sold on the Hide for $1500.

Sorry for being long winded but dont get ripped off at Cabelas. I would list them here and on other approiate forums.

What about hiring an Auction company and sell them at a private auction kind of like an estate sale while your still alive. Just a suggestion.

How many rifles are you talking about?

You will get substantially less if you don't sell off individually. If you're talking about lots of rifles, it could be a big financial hit.

So, here's one idea, find another hide member or a shooting friend who is close and who is willing to take this on for you, and trade it out for a one or two of the rifles.

Lots of folks have the time and need the money, and I would bet would be willing to take this on for you.
