So I had a thought pop into my brain the other day that my spotting scope is a useful tool in the tool box but it would make more sense for me to have a kestrel and a leica 1600 range finder. I take the spotting scope with ever shoot but I find myself not using it as much as I become a better shooter and find myself making more hits. I find a lot of the times I am missing because of miscalculated ranges or possible weather data errors/inability to pull weather data for shooter/strelock. What are your thoughts on this. I feel I am making the right move. What did people use before Kestrels and rangefinders?

You need to do some reading here. That's like asking... "How do I shoot long distance?" There are literally so many factors involved that 100's of threads have been done discussing the finer points.

Sorry, I forgot I asked how this was done before the times of rangefinders and wind meters. My bad. My brain isn't working well this morning.

MIL dot / MOA reticles...there are real simple mathematical formula's to judge the distance to the target based on (A) the size of the target and (B) the # of mils/hash marks on the reticle. Use the search tool over there --------->

Yes, I currently do this now. We use 10ft poles attached to our targets out to 800 yards for maximum ranging accuracy. I would like the range finder for quick target ranging for unknown target sizes(animals). It seems to hard/innacurate to use the mil ranging system to range an animal that you cannot be sure of its size at long ranges. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Exo</div><div class="ubbcode-body"><div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Stevos758</div><div class="ubbcode-body"><div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: over_watch</div><div class="ubbcode-body">reticles, mirage, kentucky windage </div></div>

oh got it..my bad

have you though of converting to maps? get a detailed map of your AO / shooting place / hunting grounds whatever it is...then figure out where YOU are compared to a point of interest you can SEE then figure out on the map how far away it is.

example, on my map i can tell there is a power line 1200yds away from me. using the map as reference i can say landmark (1) is 600yds away, landmark (2) is 400yds, etc..

if an animal is near landmark 1 or 2 well then i know how far away it is...

Re: Selling spotting scope to fund kest and range fndr

That is a good idea.

I wonder if there would be a way to set up some sort of accurate grid system? say 100/50 yard grid.

Re: Selling spotting scope to fund kest and range fndr

The reality is you need all 3, start saving your pennies, I have a Kestral 4000, and a Lieca 1200 scan, don't buy either of those, get the Kestral 4500 with Atrag and Bluetooth, as for the rangefinder, don't buy Lieca anything, there was a time when they were great, now there are much better choices, Bushnell Fusions bino's will range a mile in 105 degree Texas sun all day long, Vectronics Terrapins are the shit, I bet ranging past 3000 yards is possible given the right conditions, Swaroski LRF is another good choice.

Re: Selling spotting scope to fund kest and range fndr

My plan is to downgrade to a Konus spotting scope(I currently have a Leupold 20-40 gold ring HD). I was looking at the kestral 4500. I have been hearnig alot about the Bushnell fusions. They seem to have the upperhand vs the leicas? <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: 427Cobra</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The reality is you need all 3, start saving your pennies, I have a Kestral 4000, and a Lieca 1200 scan, don't buy either of those, get the Kestral 4500 with Atrag and Bluetooth, as for the rangefinder, don't buy Lieca anything, there was a time when they were great, now there are much better choices, Bushnell Fusions bino's will range a mile in 105 degree Texas sun all day long, Vectronics Terrapins are the shit, I bet ranging past 3000 yards is possible given the right conditions, Swaroski LRF is another good choice. </div></div>

He doesn't need the 4500 with bluetooth and Atrag unless he's actually connecting to something.

Re: Selling spotting scope to fund kest and range fndr

Right, I could use the bluetooth but I am fine entering the data manually. I'm not sure it's worth the extra money to me.

Re: Selling spotting scope to fund kest and range fndr

It's better to have and not need than need and not have, and besides that its cheaper to buy now then settle for less and later replace.

this is something i keep playing with in google earth. You can turn on a grid overlay i've just never tried printing it before...
