Re: service rifle competitions
OP,
Service Rifle shooting essentials, for most, include: rifle, sling, mat,(9) magazines, score book, CMP/NRA rule books, pens, jacket, glove, stool, ammunition, safety glasses, hearing protection, spotting scope, and scope stand. Of, course, you'll likely need a cleaning kit, and hand-loading equipment/components too.
For someone just getting into it, without the aid of a mentor, coming to an understanding of rules/range procedures, and the proper way to use equipment can be a daunting task. Then, there's learning how to use the sling and build solid positions for across the course. It's enough to make anyone, who's not really fanatical about it, to just change their mind about it, since it appears to be an ordeal. Yet, for those who do pursue it, Service Rifle competition is a facinating route to becoming an extraordinary marksman, which has been the whole idea since 1894 when this competition came about.
