Jim's book Appointment in Teheran is sort of 'in the news' today with the Eagle Claw memorial ceremony at Arlington.

Here's a fantastic review of some great books.

I'm biased. But these are great reads. From the files of "Things that never happened for $200, Alex." But probably did. Hey, who am I to contradict a good review!

Jim doesn't post much, but he rocks a Manus... and if you like Jack Carr's books, you will love Jim's! A buddy and a great writer. Appointment in Teheran is such a good read!!! SF Berlin is a unit history totally worth reading!

The Guts to Try...
42 years ago, on the night of 24/25 April 1980, the United States launched one of the most audacious rescue plans ever attempted. Called EAGLE CLAW, the operation didn’t go as planned and was aborted deep inside Iran at a place now known as Desert One. Eight lives were lost that night.
But before that happened someone had to sneak into Tehran to collect the intelligence, find the hostages, and risk their lives to prepare the way for the rescuers.
The inside story of the men who went into Tehran is not told in detail anywhere except these two books, one a non-fiction history, the other a novel…

It's the 'factional' account of the Berlin SF team that was inside Tehran awaiting Eagle Claw. The author was a member of Det. A. Which is why his books rock! Like I said... what Jack Carr's books are to the Seal community... Jim's are to the SF wo…

  • Soldiers don’t need tradecraft. They need battle drills. They don’t need subtlety. They need fire superiority. They don’t need to know a foreign language — they don’t want to talk to the bad guy, they want to kill him.

Wasn’t Ross Perot involved some how in this…..?
Eagle Claw, the US rescue effort, was Desert One as most people remember it.

What most don’t remember is that there was a ground team inside Teheran waiting for the Delta team. They were from Det A. Berlin SF. And were to provide the ground support, vehicles, etc.

Appointment in Teheran is that side of the story. Fictionalised of course.

There were people there long before the aircraft came in and landed. They needed to know if the ground was suitable enough to land and turn a 130.

It was two guys in a small plane.
That was at Desert One. That was some ballsy stuff, too. They also put in remote control landing lights.

It was an amazing mission… just too many moving parts and ahead of its time in coordination. Every joint chief wanted some of the glory. So became too big and too kludgy.

Beckwith’s book is excellent.
