So I leave for college next Saturday. I'll be going to Ohio.

I was wondering since it's my rifle and going to me, would I have to send it through an FFL? If not how would I go about shipping it?

Re: Shipping a firearm?

All you need is a lockable hard case. You can generally include ammo in boxes in the case up to around 11 pounds of ammo. All you need to do is declare it at the counter, fill out the little orange card, and let TSA inspect and then re-lock the case with a NON-TSA lock.

Also, if you are going to be living in the dorms, check the dorm regs and school regs on firearms on campus.

If you wish to ship, you can ship to yourself in another state if you intend on hunting or other legal activity.

The ATF used to have this on their site but it changed and now I can't find it. If you want, just go to the ATF site, find your local division and call. When they give you an answer, ask for the code/law/reg that is in. Write it down and look it up yourself for wording. Print that section out. Keep it around for when you are going to the Post office or UPS or FEDEX depot (not store).

Re: Shipping a firearm?

I've already made arrangements of where I'll be allowed to keep the rifle.

Problem is I don't have a hardcase at all, I had no intention of leaving till next year but I received a call last Thursday saying there was an opening this year, and to be there by the 22nd. So there was really no time to prepare.

Thanks for the info.
