I use UPS, cheaper and easy folks to work with. Never have asked for a copy of FFL. I always had one available.
Also the local FedEx guy was a jerk because their policy requires a copy of FFL of the receiver even if it is going to a gunsmith and there is no change of ownership. Whipped his policy book out to show me.

This works very well and has been my preferred method for shipping rifles out to smiths for work.
Also, make sure you get your shipment insured for the full value of the rifle plus any extras you send along and don't go cheap on the shipping container. If you aren't sending the rifle in a quality hard case, at a minimum, spring for one of the carboard shipping boxes with foam inserts specifically made for shipping firearms like these:

Also insure for about 25% more than actual value as also like devalue your claim. We do alot of UPS gun shipping and have just about seen it all. Also a local USPS shipper is seeing alot of problems with them and he said collecting money from USPS insurance is just about impossible. Good luck all the shippers can really suck at times.

I also use UPS, but you need to go to one of their central delivery facilities. They won't accept it at a UPS store. Insure it the way swd described. They will also provide you with a tracking number that is very easy to use on line. You'll always know where it is, and the person you're sending it to can be informed.

It is funny how things differ in different areas of the USA. For example the only way our USPS will ship a firearm is if you have an FFL. And you must ship to an FFL. SO one day I got mad and insisted on seeing their policy. I was so mad I was going to hire a lawyer and sue them. Then the lady said OK I will ship it for you. So it was all just BS.
Now I use Fed-Ex. Fed-Ex is the cheapest carrier for me to use here in WV. I will never ship anything again with UPS. Their prices are too high, and their boxes are always damaged the most upon receipt.
Always make sure that you get a "signature required" slip. And get the one that you receive back. I also recommend shipping in a hard case only. With a good cardboard exterior box. One of the cheapies from Wally World will work great if your rifle fits inside them. And you do not have to worry about the shipper tearing up your new Pelican case.
Never ship on a Friday-or even a Thursday.

I always use FedEx Express. I always use the same location to ship from and the people are great. Before I bring the gun box in I always tell them that I am about to bring a gun in to ship. They are very helpful and I have never had a problem with FedEx.

I have respect for people who dont start random shit about others over the internet without any backround info, then when proved wrong, they continue to attempt to soil the others name with any oppertunity they get.

UPS ground or whatever you decide, personally me I spent allot on my action and barrel like everyone else etc. I was sending to Louisiana Precision $3500 in parts for the gun put down in insurance $5000 it costs very little more! I thought if they lose it that is there problem I will have 3500 invested and get 5000 back for a mere 15 dollars more haven't seen a problem yet in my area FedEx sucks!
Insure for more than what your sending and who cares I wished they lost mine then you have extra cash to build BIGGER!!!

Just calling a spade a spade, and you always act like something you aren't (an adult). You hand out opinions on gear and shooting like you've been there, done that over and over when you aren't even old enough to be in posession of a firearm by yourself without a note from your parents that you are on the way to or back from an organized shooting event you participate in.
I have respect for many minors that shoot, but usually they don;t try to act like they aren't.
Now, would you mind backing up your statement with figures showing that UPS knowingly hires criminals or unknowingly hires more criminals that other carriers??

Copy the regulations from the USPS's site, because many folks working at the Post Office don't know the rules, and a local postmaster that doesn't like guns can fail to properly inform their employees.

Sorry but a well respected firearms builder told me that he does not ship UPS because they hire known felons (not criminals, I used the wrong term). And since then <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: line-through">I have never shipped firearms UPS.</span></span> My father has never shipped firearms through UPS. (thats for Steve.)

I've been using UPS without any issues. I tried Fed-X and USPS and both gave me problems when they found out I was shipping complete rifles.

This is true, a pelican or storm works well, I then put locks on it (big ass locks) and stick it in the cardboard box the pelican came in, that way who ever is transporting it doesn't get curious about what's inside, all they see is a big, heavy cardboard box.

Never had a problem one with the guys and girls at the USPS. If you have your work done before you get there, takes about the same amount of time as getting a money order and sending it off. I'll continue to use them until I have a problem.

The only good news is that they are buying me two new triggers. UPS has left me hanging many times too, waiting on a shipment that never left, or got lost, or sent to California for some reason.

Last pistol I shipped I wound up doing the same as desertfox01 but unintentionally. Ive used ups to ship to kansas city a couple of times, (manners and GAP). The first time i wnet to the ups store to ship it which is less than a mile from my house. I was told rather rudely buy the girl behind the counter(just happens to be a favprote ex of mine) that they dont except fire arms. THe reason is that the ups store and kinkos are not owned by fedex/ups. so what you are doing is giving a contractor your firearm so they can give it to ups so they can deliver it. I dont like that idea very much nor do i like giving my ex any free time with a firearm i own.
THere are both ups and fedex hubs less than 5 miles from my house in earth city. I talked to a friend who is on a shooting team for a local college and found out that they ship thier rifles to every comp. at the ups hub and to just make sure you show up around 6 to get the same people they use (last pick up is 7).
All they asked was for the ffl it was going for because they had to have it on file(which i dont understand why) and they asked if it was unloaded. I had mine in a hard case that was duct taped shut and in a cardboard box that was taped up. 18 hours later it was at GAP's door and i havnt found a need to use fedex since.
the only thing i didnt like was that the ups driver left the box sitting on my front porch when it got shipped back. i would of prefered to drive down to the hub afterwork and pick it up but ups didnt know it was a firearm and there was no sig, requested.
Ive used ups to ship to kansas city a couple of times, (manners and GAP). The first time i wnet to the ups store to ship it which is less than a mile from my house. I was told rather rudely buy the girl behind the counter(just happens to be a favprote ex of mine) that they dont except fire arms. THe reason is that the ups store and kinkos are not owned by fedex/ups. so what you are doing is giving a contractor your firearm so they can give it to ups so they can deliver it. I dont like that idea very much nor do i like giving my ex any free time with a firearm i own.
THere are both ups and fedex hubs less than 5 miles from my house in earth city. I talked to a friend who is on a shooting team for a local college and found out that they ship thier rifles to every comp. at the ups hub and to just make sure you show up around 6 to get the same people they use (last pick up is 7).
All they asked was for the ffl it was going for because they had to have it on file(which i dont understand why) and they asked if it was unloaded. I had mine in a hard case that was duct taped shut and in a cardboard box that was taped up. 18 hours later it was at GAP's door and i havnt found a need to use fedex since.

Some things to consider - UPS top insured value allowed is $5000
USPS will insure up to $25000 - and anything over $1000 is rarely if ever misplaced/lost/stolen due to the item actually being delivered under lock and key. (Experience with nice watches) Plus the package wrapping is nearly tamperproof. (brown paper with a USPS stamp, many stamps, on every seam.

I too use USPS Priority to ship guns/items and always get the extra insurance with signature and confirmation. Never had an issue before.. "knocks on wood"

I shipped a pelican 1720 case today through UPS. I was going to have them box it up but they were going charge me $75 just to box it up.I just told them put a label on it and ship it. Total cost was still almost $50 for ups ground.
