Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

I've seen that video before, disappointed then and now. A few misses, and no hits on camera, and no reticle info or pics. BFD.
I need to update the post title, since they recommend .300 WinMag as minimum caliber for plains game. I'll be using a .338 WinMag with 180 Partitions, and haven't seen any subsonic load data for it.

Work up some loads with 5744. It's an excellent powder for reduced loads.

I don't load 338s but I use a lot of 5744 in my 375 H&H (as well as other cart.)

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

I have a good friend who's dad farms in South Africa. We says baboons can wreck a corn crop! Apparently they're very greedy. The baboon grabs the first ear of corn off the stalk and places it under its arm....then goes to the next stalk and grabs the ear and places it under its arm....dropping the first ear in the process. It will continue down the row until it reaches the other end, leaving all the ears on the ground except the last one!

He says they trap them. And when they point their rifle barrels at the baboons, they cover their faces with their hands, apparently knowing what's gonna happen next.

I'd love to shoot nuisance animals as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure if I could shoot something that's hiding its face with its hands.....lol

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

I tried a 308 200 grain Lapua subsonic on a feral pig at about 100 yards. The impact on the animal makes a "whack" similar to dropping a book on the floor. The pigs scattered immediately, and the bullet failed to put down the intended pig with my usual placement at the base of the ear.

Bottom line, ineffective and not a humane way to put down an animal.

.
They also put chicken wire type stuff over the thatch roofs there as well to protect'm from boon shenanigans. As it was explained to me when I was over, they say they boons will grab handful's of the thatch an slide down the roof. Repeating the process over n over like kids on a sliding board.

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

One thought-

I have hunted quite a bit throughout the years and dealt with wildlife for a profession. I think subsonic .308 ammo (Just saw you said .338) either would be ok for Baboons but I would make sure it would open up with low velocity.

Baboons are strong, fast, mean, smart SOB's compared to many animals I wouldn't want a wounded one (or healthy) coming after me.

Given if I was under cover or inside a hunting cage I wouldn't hesitate to take them with a .22lr

But when it comes to "dangerous game" which they would qualify to me. I would want the hydrostatic shock as well as the wound channel to help put down the animal.

just my .02

Either way I am jealous and hope you get the opportunity

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

The only qualification I have for talking about subs for baboon is that I REALLY want to whack some.
So, FWIW:
I just saw some deer shot with sub 300BLK 220 SMK in TX. All shots inside 50 yards. Spine hits resulted in DRT deer. Heart and lung hits were amazing - none ran farther than 20-30 yards. All the wound channels looked like 2 blade broadheads went through.

If you intend to shoot game with subs, shot placement is key. I don't mean hitting, I mean hitting EXACTLY where you need to, and not 1/2" off. So, figuring that accuracy and precision, think of this:
Each shot, whether suppressed or unsuppressed, supersonic or subsonic, resulted in all the deer in the area running away. When sub/suppressed rounds were fired, the deer came back 5 minutes sooner than if super or unsuppressed, if they came back at all. So don't think that just because you cut down the noise level that the prey won't mind - they do. They seem to 'get it' and vacate as usual.

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

Hmmm, I'm rethinking what I would hunt if I ever get the oppurtunity to hunt Africa. I think I may order that Tubb video, a baboon vermin safari would be a blast with a Presicion rifle. Throw in a kudu for the wall and I would be a happy hunter.

To the OP, unless your shooting suppressed subsonic I don't think it would make much difference, I see a lot of PH's have suppressed rifles but you would have to find one willing to let you screw it on your gun.

Not sure if that's good or bad! I should find out this week if I'm going. I'll probably just take 100 rounds of .338, no subs, and do some 'babooning' with full power Accubonds. Wheeee! The .338 is threaded, guess I'll have to see what pitch they use in RSA and get an adapter made.
I also plan on taking my beat up old Citori, the bird hunting is supposed to be spectacular and the PH has bird dogs.

PS: Anybody have any idea how hard it is to legally take a suppressor from the USA to Africa? I'm sure there are gobs of paperwork, but having my own suppressed rifle, in Africa....

Re: Shooting baboons with subsonic .308?

I went to school with a "chap" that hunted baboons and cats for a living for a few years. He used a 300wim mag. When I asked him why such a large caliber for such a small critter he responded "distance and safety". He said they wised up fast and shooting was usually at a fair distance. I think he had to collect them to get paid and he said going onto the bush after a pissed off wounded baboon was a sure way to get hurt.

Me, I'd like to go shoot hyenas in the face. Lots of them!!
