Shooting competitions with a chassis vs stock

So I am in the process of building a new (2nd bolt) rifle specifically for competition use only. In the past I’ve shot competitions with the krg bravo, and love it’s ergonomics. I was able to get a xlr gen 1 envy chassis at a really good price and have been feeling it out. I’m wondering...how do people shoot comfortably with a chassis? I can’t get my trigger hand comfortable with the stock tube in the way. Am I doing something wrong or is it just a “get used to it or don’t use it” type of thing? Help me out here cause I’m liking the ergonomics of a traditional style stock more but I see how popular chassis are so I feel like I’m doing it wrong.

try a chassis that doesn't have a AR style buffer tube for a stock.

only thing i dislike about the XLRs.

most other chassis aren't like that - so it's not really accurate to ask "how are guys shooting comfortably with chassis..." when the chassis you are referring to is pretty unique in that aspect. Their answer won't translate exactly over to the XLR.

I’d say to try grabbing it by the handle when you are shooting instead of the buffer tube.

Use what works for you. I don't like chassis myself as I hate AR grips on my bolt guns and I use Manners stocks. Manners with a mini chassis allows bolt and go like a chassis. Chassis are not some sort of magic. They just offer ease of strapping a bunch of stuff to the outside of them like arca but stocks are coming around to that also. Being comfortable behind the rifle is more important though.

I would recommend using a grip with a thumb rest like the MPA. Then resting your thumb on the shelf gets it out of the way. On something like a Bravo, TRG, or McM A5, my thumb tends to rest higher more to the middle of the back of the grip rather than along the right side. I had trouble with my RPR when I first got it with the thumb, but adding the MPA to give my thumb somewhere to go solved the problem.

Your reason is why i stick with thre Bravo, Whiskey 3 or a traditional. Not a fan of floating my thumb too far out to the side. Krg whiskey is the perfect cross between both.

These are all helpful ideas...I’ll try a grip with a thumb shelf and if that doesn’t work maybe I need to try a different stock/chassis. Manners stock would be my dream but I don’t have the funds for those just yet. My dream to own one one day

Some people who float thumbs on palm side don’t like XLR’s
I don’t float my thumb like that and love my XLR’s.

The Bravo would be your best bet, IMO. I don’t float my thumb, but I also don’t like running it behind a grip much either. I can and have on a chassis like the XLR, but unless it’s an actual AR, I prefer the feel of a traditional stock because I like my thumb on top. The shelf formed just behind the action tang feels most natural to me, and I like to index my thumb in the divot where the stock meets the tang so I get a consistent grip each time. The Bravo allows me to do that like I would with a stock, while still allowing me the benefits of a chassis. My grip with the Bravo is almost exactly the same as it is on my FN SPR with a McMillan A5 stock. Feels great, and doesn’t break the bank!

I like the feel of stocks better....however...I shoot noticeably better with my MDT ACC....so...guess I'll learn to deal with the feel of my thumb resting on the shelf at a different angle than I grew up with.
