Shooting Mat with carrier

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

I am very happy with my Voodoo Tactical Deluxe shooting mat. Since you state that you don't need "the best", I guess this is a good choice. It is rugged enough, and so far nothing has broken on my mat. (I was a bit skeptical to the zippers and buckles, but they all seem to hold up well)
This is a nice bag for transporting the rifle, ammo, binoculars, cleaning kit, and other stuff to the range (the long pocket is designed to take a spotting scope with 60mm objective). It can be carried by hand, but also like a backpack. It is also designed so that it can be dragged. It is comfortable to use as a shooting mat, and it keeps me dry when lying on wet grass.
I have now had this mat for two years, and I use it for carrying my rifle to the range, and as a shooting mat when I shoot at other locations.
In these photos the short scout-rifle is pictured, but my Rem700HTG Varmint (26"barrel) really fits perfect in there.

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

That's very similar to a Eagle HSRC, with the same flaw....IMHO...

So if you have the pockets full of optics, ammo, maybe an electronic device to two, what do you do when it's time to shoot??? Unload all the stuff out of the pockets onto the ground or lay on top of it?

Not baggin on you 73, just voicing my experience with this type of mat.

I totally agree on that point. It would perhaps have been better if the bag had molle attachments instead, and one could use whatever packs (or no packs) on the outside. What I'd really like is one larger pocket (or small day pack) to attach there instead of the two pockets. Then I could bring more gear in that pack, and just remove it from the mat wen I need to. Anyway, The pockets are nice to have, but one does not need to use them.

However, I haven't really had any issues with items in the pockets when shooting. All the pockets end up on the right panel, and most of my body weight stays on the center one and over to the left. I also try to keep things that I will need at the range in those pockets anyway, so then I will have them available at hand and out of the pockets (Ammo, binoculars, rangefinder etc). Some items like a small cleaning kit, gloves and such stays in the pockets though. I have just ordered a spotting scope too, so it will be interesting to see if it fits in the pocket, and if the mat can be used without taking the scope out every time I intend to use the mat.

A more simple shooting mat, which will also carry the rifle is something like this. I think this looks like a well designed no-fuzz mat:

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

This an Eagle mat I picked up several years. I don't think the same config is still available though. No extra stuff on the outside to keep it from laying flat on the ground or make it uncomfy to lay down on. Simple and it works. I picked it up from Scott over at Snipercountry at the time but I don't see them listed anymore like this.

It's just like the Galati mat shown in the post above from the looks of it.

Nice mats, have the Eagle in MC. You know--I would prefer the data book and round loops to be at the other end. Anyone else every wish that?

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

sr15 match,

That Eagle bag is the DB-BS, and the one from Galati above that is a made in China knock off. I dont think Eagle offers the DB-BS as a stocking item any longer.

Steve, Bummer as it's a handy simple carrier and mat combo. No fancy straps, pockets or BS. Just wrap it up, carry and go.

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

As soon as I finish another project, you will see something like this being worked on for the Triad line. The concept is valid, and a US made option should remain available.

Not sure but just wanting to clarify something here... The Galati rifle case/shooting mats are made in the USA. Galati does outsource some of their more generic cases like your typical soft zippered cases for field shooting shotguns and hunting rifles to outside the USA. But their Drag bags, Delux shooting mats, XT cases, and much more are made in the USA and are right up there in quality.

Not sure if you were referring to a different bag as being a Galati knockoff made in China, or if you were suggesting that Galati was made in China? If not then no worries, just wanted to clarify the information here.

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

Hmm, there was a time most every item in the Galati product line was a direct copy of an Eagle product. After looking at their .com, I still see a great number of those products remain. The fact that they are located in the same metro area as Eagle, lead many to think there was a "leak" at Eagle. I experienced this firsthand when waiting on a custom run of a new Eagle bag that was not even released for sale yet. Our order of 25 was the first run, even before the production ones were made. Somehow, before Eagle kicked out our order, Galati managed to somehow, just lucky I guess, come out with an IDENTICAL product made in China. Left a bad taste in my mouth I guess.

I was not aware that they had domestic production now. Guess I had better get over it........

Re: Shooting Mat with carrier

Mike,

I just got off the phone with a nice lady at Galati (1-800-444-2550). I asked her if it was possible for me to come visit their production facility in about two weeks when I visit the St. Louis area. She told me that they dont have a production facility here in the USA, SINCE ALL OF THEIR PRODUCTS ARE IMPORTED.

They do have two .coms, one is galatiinternational.com and one is galatigear.com

One is the company that has the gear made somewhere other than the USofA, the other is a company that sells this line of imported gear, along with items from other vendors. Some of the items from these other vendors are made in the USA, some are not. Based on the information from the "horses mouth", the nylon gear made by Galati is all imported.

You may need to review your relationship with Galati, you might have been misled or misunderstood something you were told.

I will however recant my statement about them being in St Louis, I was wrong. They are either 1 or 2 hours SE of St Louis, depending on which PO Box address you look at.

Steve,
I'll get a call in with Galati and see what I can't figure out. I was told they have two different lines, with one being China made and of an admitted lesser quality, and a USA made one where they make their higher quality drag bags, shooting mats, XT cases...etc
Thanks for the info and I apologize, looks like there's some miscommunication going on for sure! Will update when I receive more info.
