Short barrel 308 guys.

Any of you guys with 18-20 inch barrels, getting over 2600 fps with 175s or 178s????

Right now im pushing 178s with 44gr of varget at 2525, slight flat primer. Thinking if i should go up another half to one grain.

Fastest I ever got with 175's/178's was around 2580. With 43.8 grains of Varget. It was through a Brux 4 groove that was crowned at 17.5"


I did get 2620's from a 2010 Lot of M118LR, very accurate too.

43.0g varget 175 smk is getting me 2470ish at 1000ft 75F out of a 16 inch DTA barrel.

Same load gets 2520 out of a 21 inch Lilja barrel.

What chamber?
Who made barrel and twist rate?

Had a set back Rem 700 PSS barrel, 20" long with custom chamber (very close to a 95 Palma IIRC) that would run 175 SMKs at 2620. What velocity is the rifle printing best groups at 300 yards or farther? Velocity is fine, accuracy is final.

Trued rem with ptg bolt, 308 match chamber, barrel is 18.5 4 groove 10 twist krieger with sf brake.

Havent shot groups with it other than 100 yards but stacks bullets on steel at 4-550 yds.

I went from a 26" TRG22 down to a 20" TRG22. I really wanted to develop a load for the 178gr BTHP to achieve good accuracy and be over 2600fps. At or above 2600 fps I have fair only accuracy and a sticky bolt. I dropped down about half a grain of Varget to 44.3 grs, and have consistant half MOA or less, and 2582 average FPS, and no pressure signs.

I tried PP2000mr, and got slightly better velocity, but at the price of random pressure signs and fair only accuracy.

2582 fps will just have to do.....
