Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the long range world and have been reading post on the hide for a few months now taking in all the great information you guys have to offer. Now I have come up with a Remington 700 stainless 243 and would like to do a short barreled build in 308. I have been trying to find some information on recomended twist rate for a barrel that is under the 20 inch mark. Kinda leaning towards an 18 inch and eventually adding a can to it. Havent been able to find much with the search function about this topic so any info you guys can share will be much appreciated.

Basically what I would like to know are some opinions on 18 inch barrels so I can make up my mind if I want to build one this short or stick with a 20 or 22 inch. Also this will be a bit of a budget build and will probably only be used out to about 600 or 700 yards unless it is capable of going further.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Short barrel 308 question.

175 smk's were coming in point first at 1500 yards with an 18.5" 11.25 twist .299 bore bartlein barrel. i'd say that it stabilizes fine. lots of people have been going with a 10 twist though.
