Seeing more and more pictures of people drooling over short barrel bolt action rifles, to where it either has a brace or a tax stamp. But y tho? I don't get it. Why are people excited about this?

But what utility? Unless it's a quick burning cartridge, it's not going to get up to speed. So maybe a 300 BLK, for the sound factor.
Light and handy. I’m tired of boat anchor rifles. They have their place but you can get a lot done with a shorty. You’re sacrificing some speed, but it isn’t nearly as much as most people think. No need for a “quick burning” cartridge.

Here in the south east where I am we dont have long open spaces. A long shot is 600 and that is rare. Like a sub 10% average. Manuverablity is more important. Getting in and out of vehicles. Movement through dense canopies or dense underbrush. Traversing obstacles. Climbing trees.

Add on a suppessor and a normal length rifle is now crazy long. To get back to a more normal length overall you need to start with a shorter barrel.

Ok, that's reasonable

Don’t tell that to all the animals I‘ve killed with my 16” 308 barrel. This particular specimen took a pill to the dome at 425 yards. Chip shot. And guess what.... if my barrel was a few inches shorter I bet the outcome would have been exactly the same

Maneuverability was the primary reason for my build. Add in a folding rear stock, the thing can tuck away just about anywhere.

When hunting at night, it's rare to shoot LR. Shorter barrels become far more practical, especially with a suppressor.

Let it be known that a short barreled rifle can still be quite heavy. Mine is.

We are lucky to have property where we can shoot to 1800. We also pig hunt that property and 16” 308 is perfect for that. Add the clip ons and suppressors, rifles get heavy. We have taken pigs with 16” barreled AIs out to 550 and never thought twice.
If we are going out to just shoot, sure I’ll screw a 26” 6.5x47 barrel in but to hunt and walk around, 16” reigns king.

I think an ultra short bolt action would be a super fun rifle. I want one. If I had spare thousands I would totally have a short 300blk bolt action pistol on a ARC Mausingfield paired with a Bartlein or Krieger barrel.

I'm still waiting for my Thunderbeast 338SR. That would make the thing ridiculous, and also quiet.

I would argue that people simply use way too much gun 99% of the time. They go buy a more common Precision Rifle and it spends the majority of it's life at under 300 yards. 338 Lapua's that are regularly shot at the same distances or "stretched out" to 6-700 yards.

I recently grabbed a Howa Mini action in 300 Blackout and I will build it as a SBR. Trying to figure out which stock I am going to run. Options are limited but there are some cool ones. The JTAC elf owl is the most appealing to me I just don't know if I want to spend that kind of money on it. At the other end of the spectrum I can just do a Boyds. Either way it's going to end up with a sub 10" barrel and be suppressed pretty much all the time. You could build the same gun in 6.5 Grendel and it would be more than enough for what most people do with rifles.

Some people also have the ultralightweight fetish and the barrel itself is a large proportion of the overall weight.

Energy and penetration really don't apply for paper and steel and most animals are really just not that hard to kill. If a .44 magnum from a 6" barrel will handle everything walking the western hemisphere, then everything else is just extra.

I have two 6mm creedmoor barrels 16.5" and 22" and the velocity difference is 150-200 fps less on the shorter one. with a suppressor it is easy in and out of the blind or truck window, walking in the brush and will bang steel all day at 600 yds which is farthest I've ever tried.

Been whoring this rifle out for a good while now. It will rock an AICS AXSR chassis once release. A member on here offered to give the forend rail a Bruce Jenner cut so the barrel will have just enough clearance for the suppressor.

dont take this in a bad way. but that rifle is adorable. what are the specs of your build?

I'm about to build up a short 300 blk in a pork sword chassis. They short, handy, in 300 blk at 8" powder is burned, and it will live it's life suppressed. You stick a suppressor on a 24"+ barrel and it's crazy long. Those rifles are designated to range/comp use. I wouldnt want to lug it around the woods.

Surgeon 591r from back when they were still cool. 11” bartlein medium Palma 308win. Mod 22 trigger. KRG Whiskey 3 Gen 4. SAS Resistor. Schmidt 5-20 in SPUHR rings.

When she gets her make over, it’ll be sitting in the newest AICS AXSR and rock the TBAC Dominis-SR.

If all the powder doesn't burn up, then does your suppressor get more fouled up than it normally would?

I’m using H322 and 135g SMK. I’d say it’s pretty close to a full burn before leaving the barrel, but never investigated further. Didn’t really care too.

This rifle is not hearing safe even with the can on it. Without the can, it’s miserable lol.

Eta: I’m fortunate enough to have a large selection of cans to pull from. The SAS is by far my least favorite which is why it’s getting replaced with a TBAC.

^^^This. 300BO is where it's at. The nice thing about the round is that it pretty much reaches maximum speed within the first 8 inches of the barrel. Add a suppressor and you're looking at a very small package that you can throw in a small backpack and take just about anywhere. You're looking at 150/ 300 yards point range with subs/ supers with that short a barrel that is very accurate and deadly to most of your average game including deer and pigs.

Just about finished with my bolt action build. Overall length comes out to just about 30" with the brace out, 21" when it's folded up. It's still a bit hefty as the barrel is something like a Sendero contour and once the optic is mounted, that'll add a bit. Thinking about painting the chassis but not sure how the cerakote would work with whatever dip Remington uses for that chassis.

My AR, I've had for quite a while. That one is a DOLOS build with a takedown barrel. When the barrel is removed and is folded up, it's just about 14" in length and 12 inches from the top of the optic to the bottom of the pistol grip. I store that one is a small camera bag.
