Short light suppressed whitetail hunting rifle

The last time I hunted with my short, light rifle I shot 4 whitetail. All under 100yds. 3 headshots and one body shot on a running deer. All were down with one shot. I was looking at the 16” Christensen Ridgeline Scout in .223 for a thermal host. They are also offered in .300, .308, 6.5 and 6mm arc. Pricey but only 6lbs.

I love my 2 CA carbon rifles. I have a Ranger 22, and a Ridgeline 24” .280 Ackley.

I'm curious if anyone has experience using a 16.5in barrel 308 or 6.5cm for hunting. Most of the factory rifles with a 16.5' barrel are heavy. My thought was to buy a tikka tx3 lite in 6.5cm, have a gunsmith cut the barrel to 16.5" and thread it. Could probably either thread to 1/2x28 and add an adapter to get to 5/8x24 or just add the 1/2x28 xeno brake for use with my nomad. Top with a 3x9 or LPVO and have a 8ish pound short light woods rifle for whitetail. I know 6.5cm thrives in long barrels, i have a 24in long range 6.5cm, but looking at the ballistics it seems like i can get over 1000ft/lbs out to 300 yards or so. My shots are typically inside 150 and deer in the carolinas a small. kind of a scout, kind of like a fix or cross but in a traditional stock. 6.5 will have lower recoil and less drift and drop and at the distances I'm hunting I don't think i'll miss the gains in energy by using 308. Has anyone tried anything like this or can talk me out it? The thing holding me back is that if it was a good idea i bet there would be factory rifles in 6.5 this short. Thanks for any input

I have a 16 1/2" Ridgeline with a Carbon pipe in 6.5CM that is a nice lil gun for jeep/truck cab/Blind gun with a can on it. Sierra #1728 is a mean little pill on feral hogs/Javelina and white Tail deer. Also have an old Remington 600 in 308 Win ,18" bbl and its just as good out to 3/400 yds. im in the process of building something halfway in between a 16 1/2" carbon 7mm-08 on a Control round feed action ( If I ever find one). 1000# will kill the heck out of a lot of things. If you already have a 6.5 id go buy thtat Tika in 6.5 and chop it off call it done! Short bbl 16"-18" barrels with cans are getting VERY popular in South and West Texas

That's a good looking gun. And you're not lying about the carbon weight. My Ultra 5 weighs more than my Dominus just because I've never cleaned it. The last time I cleaned my ultra 7 it weighed 21 oz. That's an extra half a pound of weight hanging off the very tip of your barrel.

Just out of curiosity's sake, what length does that Fix measure from butt to tip with the suppressor?

However that’s speculation, I only have the Black Collar arms 12” .308 data to extrapolate off of as there doesn’t seem to be a surplus of guys running super short magnums. But based on that there data shows around 2400 fps for factory 147s, load data puts the .300 WSM at 400 fps faster than the .308 and I’d be running hammer bullets to gain another 100 fps or so. That should put me around 2900 fps with a 150 assuming my hypothesis is correct.

Yeah lots of folks always ask why run a short magnum in a short barrel.

Simple I get the performance of regular cartridge with a full length barrel out of a handy package.

I think you’d be right at 308 velocity.

Just got mine back last month. Phenomenal. So much better. I had stopped using my sdn6 completely because of a broken. Locking bar.

My Nomad L is full auto rated, has no barrel length restrictions and is rated up to .300 Norma so I’d imagine a .300 WSM at half the powder capacity would be fine.

Nice! We have the Redneck blinds out at our place as well, they are super spacious and cozy. I'd like to have all of the blinds replaced with them but at $4K with the 10ft stand it gets pricey.

I love my redneck. I will probably buy a second one in 23 and mount it to a trailer. We field hunt for the most part.

I can't wait to have a 16" (22" w/ suppressor) to be swinging out of it. It will make moving around so much easier.

Our main lease is in the Texas Hill Country so it's a lot of rock, bluffs, and thick cedar. Shots aren't that far and you have to get elevated to be able to see any reasonable distance. I always have my 9" 300BLK in the blind incase a pig steps out and I would be lying if I said I hadn't become spoiled with short, suppressed setups over the years, but I am just now getting around to setting up shorty suppressed bolt guns.

We have a family place in south Texas and it is much more wide open, elevation in a blind isn't nearly as important there but the ability to take a shot beyond 250-300yds becomes a lot more commonplace.

A suppressor is going to take a pounding on a 12” 300WSM, that’s going to be a shit load of muzzle blast.

It is a whole lot shorter than it was!!! So much easier to maneuver in the blind and pack into the field. Finished length was 17". Suppressor is 9" long. Still shoots 1-MOA to sub all the way to 400. It's going to be my Coyote rifle for KY Night season starting 12-1 & will finish deer season this year.

My son's 16 in 6.5cm with form 1 can is 3 single shots and 3 deer harvested. His buck this year was bang flop at 65 yards, another buck ran about 40 yards and a doe ran about 20.

This is all with factory Hornady American Whitetail 129gr

Bergara Wilderness Ridge SP 18" 308. Vortex Razor HD LHT 3-15x50 in Talley Modern Sporting Rings 30mm Medium on a Talley Picatinny rail and a TBAC Ultra 7 Gen2 CB. It comes in at 8lbs 9oz with the glass, TBAC CB brake and no ammo and 9lbs 1oz with the can.

I plan to run it as is for the rest of this season and see what I think. I am considering a different stock with a detachable AICS mag setup and possibly sending the bolt off for fluting. Hopefully the Vortex doesn't let me down.

Western PA Hunter here. Mostly 200yds or less. Hiking up and down mountains. Through thick mountain Laurel and underbrush. Lots of hunting from elevated tree stands. Humping a 17lb McMillan A3-5 with a 26in barrel got old real fast.

My sub 8lb guns with shorter barrels are a dream. Currently building another one on a BAT BumbleBee action, Manners EH4, and 18in Proof carbon barrel. 6.5x47. Should be under 7lbs. Can’t wait.

Got mine all set up for deer hunting here in PA. Archimedes SA, HNT26 Chassis, 18” 6.5 PRC running 109 Hammer’s at 3275 fps, topped with a Gen 3 1-10x and a Nomad Ti. Total weight comes in at 9.5 pounds without the bipod. Bare rifle weight is right around 7 pounds with empty mag.

Used it this weekend to take either my first or second biggest whitetail and my first 9 point, I’ll measure it up when I get it back next summer.

I went light, and then put a giant (and heavy) ass scope on it for some reason. Originally considered a suppressor, but it seems like a minimum barrel length is 18" without sacrificing maneuverability.

The 1lb suppressor on that 450bm. It’s got a LP titanium action and weighs 7lb 3oz naked.

The 300wsm & 6.5cm have steel LP actions. That EH1A on the 6.5cm is a little hefty. Especially with the adjustable cheek wear on all three sticks.

I like it the way it is.

IMO - AICS magazines are not "better" for a hunting rifle. While they don't always make noise, they have the potential to make more noise by rattling.
