Shorty 22-250, 243, or 6x47??

Watcha hunting? Wabbits? T-Rex?

Talked to a fella long ago, dumped all his deer w/a 6mm R600, 85 BTHP, up to 400 yds.

I'd buy a Ruger AR in 243, 19-20", plenty handy, though I know a local former LEO/trainer who used a 17" chopped 243 R700 BDL for a handy stand rifle.

Blast goes up and up, so 19-20 for me. More efficient IMHO would be a 6.5CM model, at 19-21" - Bigger bore, burn more powder INSIDE bbl.... = efficient

I'm also curious what velocities a guy can expect from an 18" 22-250. A family member is looking at doing a custom build in 22-250 with some guidance. He was thinking more along the lines of 22-24" barrel, but I think he wouldn't mind going shorter if velocity isn't horrible.

Mike Lucket here in OK hunts with a 22x47 and he loves it, I value his opinion greatly as he kills more coyotes than most people could dream about. He is also a very skilled gunsmith.

90s in 22 cal x 47.....how long a tube? Seems 6 bore speeds in 24"...wonder what pressure.

I shoot 80gr VLD's out of my .223 at 2,900fps and no real pressure issues. Brass only last 6-7 firings before the pockets go, but nothing serious. A x47 case could push a 90 VLD at 3100-3200 with no issue.

Mark at Spartan rifles is doing a build for me on a model 7 remington action with a Bartlein 7.7 twist Sendero 22cal. I am going 20 inch but may go 18 or 19 inches but just not sure. I will have to come back to this and see if any posts come up with some velocities on the 22-250 with a shorty.

I have a 6.5x47 18.5 being built at the moment so I can't comment on speed of it. I had a smith in OK build me a 22x47 shooting 80 amax and smk. I'm getting about 3250-3300 with a mild load of 37grns H4350 but it's a 26" barrel. I think it's a neat round though. It would have been handier with a shorter barrel. I also have a 6x47 that is crazy accurate and possibly would build one with a 20-22" barrel.

Will look fwd to your results. I prefer a 19-22" - 20-21 is ideal to my liking - had a few 243s in 20 and one in a Mohawk 18.5 - all deadly in the field for whatever used on.

Assembled a custom Savage hunter for my nephew. Savage Model 10 SA with the standard 22" sporter barrel cut down to 17" in a Boyds American Walnut stock. It's a beaut and shoots the 105 Amaxs at 2750 FPS. He was banging a 10" steel plate at 340 yards sitting cross leg and supported with his knee! The next weekend he plugged a large doe from 140. Double lunged and DRT. Good boy!

Don't worry about short barreled .243's not having enough to hunt Whitetail with...it has plenty. BTW the 1:9 twist stock Savage barrel stabilizes the 105 just fine. The total rifle weighs just 7lbs with Bushnell Prostaff 3-9 scope on it in Warne aluminum rings. It's a kickass rifle and I may just have to borrow it!

I just put together a 20 inch 8 twist 22-250. I plan on doing some load work this weekend and can post some velocity results if anyone is interested. It's worth mentioning that I don't plan on pushing the rifle hard. A 223 AI with a little extra whoop-ass is the general idea. 80 grain Amaxes and H4350 in RP brass is what I plan to use.
