Hunting & Fishing Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

fiocchi has some nice #4 buck that works very well on coyotes.

I'm also used BB during the summer and it works very well. I'd suggest using no smaller then BB and no larger then #4 buck.

Winchester also use to make #4 buck.

Unless you want to use some of the way more expensive dead coyote loads.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

#4 buck is the best of the lower cost alternatives in my opinion. T Shot is another decent alternative. The best thing I have found is the Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote loads. The HS is expensive but works great and patterned better and farther than #4 buck in my shotgun. I am comfortable making a 80 yard shot with the HSDC.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

Federal makes a 3" 1-7/8oz lead load of BB's or 2's that will smoke their ass out of a .665 or .670 choke. The best part is they're $35 for 25 shells instead of $55 for 10 HS dead coyote. The HS is good stuff but I ain't giving that much for 10 damn shells.

Agreed....I've killed thousands of coyotes with 4Buck. It flat puts them down.

I shoot to sell and would rather have a pile of bb or T shot holes I don't have to sew than a few big bloody holes to deal with . Anything T or smaller I can just flesh and stretch ....no sewing .

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

For the most part, I use the Dead Coyote loads. Yes, they're expensive, but, A)it's not like I'm dove hunting with them(it's pretty much 1 shell, 1 predator) and B) they no shit take 'yotes out out to 70yards. I believe they would do it farther(because they go down with authority at that distance) but I just haven't tried it yet.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

Any idea of what I could expect out of a Mossberg 590A1? Obviously its not ideal but I have to worry about houses nearby with rifle rounds. I had three yotes in the horse pasture this morning that may need some attention.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

Ive always liked 3" copper plated buffered BB. Unfortuntaly its about as rare as hens teeth these days.

4 buck works well too, if you can find a good choke combo to get it to pattern. Ive always gotten better patterns out of BB and have always subscribed to more pellets vs bigger ones. I have no qualms with smacking a coyote out to 50 yards with the BB and a good choke combo.

If I could shoot every coyote I kill a year with a shotgun, I would!

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

No question, Dead coyote is the best. 70-80 yards is legit with the right choke.
My 2nd choice is # 4 buck.
Steel T and BB shot seem fine to about 30 yards.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

Ive never used it so I cant say much on it, but ive shot a lot of coyotes with a scattergun and 80 yards is a loooooong damn poke with one, id certainly like to see this Dead Coyote stuff "flatten" a coyote 80 yards (regularly) before id take it as gospel. Not saying it wont or cant, but id have to see it to believe it.

Hell, to get a decent pattern at that range, your 30-40 yard pattern cant be much more than a fist size! Start talking a pattern that size, now you start talking almost the need for some sight system beyond just a couple beads on the rib.

Re: Shotgun Load for Coyotes..

You should check your state's game laws. IIRC, Tennessee requires T shot or smaller against 'yotes so all buckshot is illegal.

HeviShot Dead Coyote mixes a little tungsten in with the lead to give the shot more mass and better downrange performance. It also will blow a large hole in your wallet, like more than $4 per shell.

Whats their reasoning behind that gem of a law?

Arkansas has the same stupid ass law! You can shoot a yote with a damn 50 cal but you can't use buckshot. Of course this is the same state that claims they want rid of all the wild hogs on state property but they won't let you use dogs or trap em. Our game and fish commissioners are a bunch of damn idiots!
