Hello all! I have an older
870 I want to get refurbished into a more social use shotty with ghost ring/red dot sights, different stock, rechamered to 3 inch, and refinished.
I was wondering if Wilson combat was still the best option.
If not, then who?
Thanks!
Jordan

I think Wilson Combat has slid out of the shotgun business this past year. I was viewing their website recently, virtually no shotgun parts and no custom shotguns as they used to offer.
This Remington 870 started as a Wilson Combat Scatterguns Technology setup, 18" barrel with a sea anchor of SureFire light power way out front; with a full magazine Arnold Schwartzenager couldn't drive it the target fast enough. I installed a 14" barrel with Vang Comp treatment and some other mods and it's a pretty handy accurate shotgun. I converted a Mossberg 590 shockwave .410 into a critter gun and it's really nice.
Currently converting a Mossberg 20 gauge shockwave into a similar pattern 14" project; just today Vang Comp shipping the barrel that has been ported and forcing cone extended with guarded tactical front sight, NP3 coated all action parts, rear ghost sight with integral picatinny rail to mount a red dot yadah yadah.....will post up some completed project photos in a few weeks.

Do it yourself. Pistol grip stock, NOT a pistol grip! Extended mag tube, short barrel, saddle style pic rail and a dot. No refinish, waste of money. If you must, take it apart and cerakote.

No need for a 3" chamber, 2 3/4 buckshot or slugs will fuck someone's day up just fine!! If you are doubting me borrow an 870 with a 3" chamber and shoot five 3" slugs at a paper target. Report back.

Its an 870, all drop in stuff. If you get hung up, go to YouTube. Or, have your wife help you!!
JUST KIDDING!!!!! Seriously, the point is that shit is easy. Good luck with your project!!!!

I had Wilson combat do one for me probably 20 years ago. That thing was bad ass and they did a great job especially considering it was basically a junkyard 870 I think I got for free! I do agree with the do it yourself route on everything except for the finish if you want that part of it nice, but most the 870 components are pretty plug and play IMO. I just didn’t know this back when I did mine and I was also making enough money at the time to justify sending it to Wilson and getting it back wilsonfied. Disclaimer I was also a Wilson junkie at the time, had some of there 1911 and ar rifles. Still have them all actually and they all rock except the shotgun I sold that and bought a fn slp.

Thanks for Vang Comp suggestions, I had forgotten about them!
Strike eagle and Going- nice shotties!
Texas- it is a wingmaster as well, but it has been abused and neglected-perfect for a project gun!
Sjmp- you made my morning, I will show that to the wifey...but really, I am thinking that except for the sights and clearcoat, this may be a DIY.

My wife wanted a shockwave so I happily obliged. I will agree it’s pretty freekin awesome, even bought one for my 75 year old mom. I put the opsol mini clip in it and thankfully bought plenty of buckshot mini shells before the plandemic. It is a rockstar but IMO what’s described above is way to much work for an inch or so of barrel length. Shockwave is a shockwave because it is exactly what it is. The 870 done right is as good as you could ask a pump to be.

Glad to contribute. Let me clarify.........if u want it refinished, Cerakote is tough and affordable, I didn't mean to do that yourself.

The reason I suggested the saddle rail is you can do it yourself, no holes to drill and tap. It is a one piece unit that slides over the whole receiver and is held in place by two screws that replace the trigger pins. It has a pic rail on the top for mounting a dot. I have one on a 20ga set up for deer hunting.

If you were to get a Remington slug barrel (shorty) it has front and rear sights. They are smooth and would work great for buckshot. With the saddle set up, you can look through it and still see the sights. Nice if you dot goes to shit.

Buy a shockwave.
Put it on a form 1.
???
Get tax stamp.
Put a magpul stock and forend on it.
Get a GG&G rail.
Mount red dot of choice.
Mount light of choice on forend.

Best pump shotgun you'll ever own.
Correction...

  • Mossberg 500 shockwave
  • Form 1 SBS
  • Mesa high tube adaptor
  • Mesa side saddle
  • B5 sopmod
  • Quad rail forearm
Best pump you'll ever own 😉
