Sidearms & Scatterguns Shotshells for Defense

I do have a shotgun in the house for defense, but have 000 buck in it. I'm not sure I could trust bird shot to do enough to put a man down these days, and if it ever came to defending our home with our kids in it, both my wife and I agree that we aren't looking to stop at wounding. No chances need to be taken there.

i would not trust birdshot to put ANYTHING down reliably......maybe rats and mice......but fuck, it doesnt even reliably kill birds......ask any duck hunter.

ive personally witnessed a mallard take 5 shells of #2 and still fly off......and i knew he was hit because feather were flying off it.

anyone who recommends birdshot for HD has never shot anything with a shotgun...ever....and probably shouldnt be listened too.

There is no reason to not use 3" magnum shells. With a little practice you should be able to get your A zone double taps inside of 30' to 0.2 or better. Better still, practice Mozambiques. Even better than that, have a long tube and saddle and just don't stop shooting.

Federal 000 buck 3".

When I was young, less recoil sensitive, and didn't mind spending $100 per day on shotgun shells to hunt jackrabbits, I found that I had great luck with 3" number 4 buck. I would often tumble jackrabbits at 50-60 yards with it, but that was a great deal of pellets, and it only takes one to tumble the jack.

#4 buck, not to be confused with #4 bird...
And practice... *my house is small so I don't need the other foot of shotgun?

No expert here but my Father in Law always had a 12 gauge Rossi Coach Gun sitting in the corner by the door. That same gun now sits in a corner of my house loaded with 3" magnums with #4 buckshot.

Having shot stuff (not living stuff) with that gun/those rounds I'd have little doubt it would make hamburger of a human across my living room or fired from behind the couch at the door. Backed by a 9mm pistol I always carry that's be a pretty stout opening salvo for home defense.

For home defense duty I primarily have my AR ready to go with 30 rounds of Hornady V-Max, simply because over penetration is a large concern for me due to living in an apartment complex (otherwise I'd use standard softpoint ammo).

I also, however, keep my A300 loaded up with 1 1/8oz shells of 7 1/2 shot at 1200 fps. #4 buckshot would be more ideal, but again I have over penetration concerns. That said I know that the 7 1/2 shot is still going to absolutely demolish the first couple things it hits within the distances possible inside my apartment.

7 1/2 birdshot will shred a hole into 3/4" plywood at 7 yards out of my Beretta using a plain old Mod choke. If it can do that I have no concerns whatsoever about it being able to stop any intruder in their tracks.

I would go with 2 3/4 high brass 00 buck. If you can copper plated led would be good. Why? Higher round count. Shotguns hold less then rifle ,multiple people could become issue 2 3/4 might allow 1-2 more shells. brass ? Brass is going to eject reliabley . High brass? More powder higher velocity most the time. Copper plated led? Won’t deform untill impact . Goes farther tighter . Punches through glass. Had a family member shoot 3 intruders with Kent fast steel. None of them died . Two went to jail for 3 years. The last one went to jail for 2 years. The last one went to jail for 2 years for talking the other two out of pulling the trigger on the 7mm rum put against the 16 year olds head. Instead of blowing his head off they just beat him untill he couldn’t move. Never give people shit for wanting a higher round count in the gun or on the person . It’s great the kid didn’t have to kill people at a young age. It’s not great these people are out of jail and my family members still live in the same house , and in small town where they see these people often.
