How far over a lead time would you be worried? I haven't been living under a rock and realize Covid has shaken up a lot of people's timelines. I am currently at 10 weeks over the given lead time on a barreled action. Honestly that part doesn't bother me, what does is I have received no communication back. I've sent 2 emails asking for an update. Haven't received a reply to either. Am I in the right to be worried or am I turning into THAT customer?

it's just friggin BS that gunsmiths (or anyone else) don't contact their customer with an update if they're a week over their given time. i know, stuff happens, but zero reason not to contact with an update.

Id start worrying at 20 weeks, Last couple barreled actions I ordered from 2 different gunsmiths were both twice the quoted timeline.

I got the voicemail and it literally said "Due to number of messages received, we will NOT be returning any calls. Please try back later".
Yet they posting stuff on Instagram and such, lolol.....social media fans overriding potential customers wanting to send you money.....Cannot make it up.

10 weeks over sounds like a lot to me. I've taken a few things late but never without communication from the seller, and definitely never 10 weeks over. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't be worried your not going to get your product if they're reputable, but I definitely wouldn't feel bad about bothering them either.
Send a pm and request a response by a certain date (say within 2 or three days, also mentioned previous inquiries via email.

I hate to say, that isn't too surprising. The good news is you're not getting scammed out of your money, and when you do get it, it will be good quality, but CALL them. My experience with them is Joe answers the phone pretty consistently. I'd call regularly and ask for updates. Not everyday but once or twice a week is completely reasonable IMO.
I understand not chasing people down, but sometimes a reminder doesn't hurt once lead time has come and gone. I have witnessed projects get aside under "Waiting for parts," but then the receiving team fails to notify the builder when the parts come in. OR they notify the builder but the ticket doesn't make it back in the work flow. Regardless, customer calls, parts does their check, and boom...fire under asses and things get moving.

I would call. I called them this morning I had a question about the barrel I ordered. they picked right up. After I gave them my order number he was able to tell me where my barrel was at in the process and everything. I'm sure barreled actions have a different lead time. but seems to me 10 weeks over lead is a really long time.
I'm entering week 4 of waiting for an "in stock" prefit from them. This thread is not giving me hope.
There is a reason you buy from PVA. It's not because they have a reputation for fast turnaround. Be patient. Your barrel will hammer.

I stopped by his shop and told him what I wanted. I already had a barrel blank and needed him to order a stock and an action.
He said the stock will be a 6-8 week lead time, and he has the actions in stock.
Five weeks later I get a text that says my stock came in.
I stop by that evening with my barrel and fill out the paper work for the action. He tells me not to pay for anything until the work is done. He also tells me to take my stock/bottom metal home because he doesn't want it to get damaged at the shop, and that he will start on my barrel that evening.
3 days later I get a text that the barreled action is done.
I stop by that evening with my stock, bottom metal, trigger, and muzzle break. He says "the tools are over there, start bolting everything together".
We get the gun together and I pay him cash for the gunsmith work and he says that the shop is closed so I will have to come by tomorrow to pay for the stock and the action.
It probably helps that we shoot a lot of the same matches and I usually see him around town or stop in his shop about once a week to BS.

I got really lucky with 2 custom builds I had done by PCR that were flawless from the beginning to the end. I hope that isnt who has it lol

Personally, anything over 4 weeks with no communication and I'd just file a dispute with my credit card. I don't need my money going to fund completing other customer orders leaving me on the hook, that's basically just a ponzi scheme.

He eventually disclosed the builder to be PVA but I’ve also had enough of the same shit and went with an AXMC. 30 second barrel changes, lol. Same with the MRAD. Systems featuring Fast, end user barrel changes is the only way to go IMO.

Also forgot to mention the missed opportunities of actually shooting your rifle that you were counting on. At a certain point saving $100 on a barrel but missing 10+ weeks of shooting is a pretty terrible deal.
I’m going on almost a week past my due date on a 22 week backorder from Noveske. My dealer called to tell me to cancel the order but noveske says they’ll honor the order but can’t say when...? My dealer got pissed when I told him I called Noveske and made me sound like an impatient asshole for asking for some info on the $3k rifle I ordered and was promised. I know times are tough with covid and I wasn’t requesting a date or time but rather wether or not I will actually get the gun I ordered and paid for months ago.

I'm confused. The dealer called you and told you to cancel the order, then turned around and said you were an impatient asshole for asking on the status?
Basically, yes. He told me they hadn’t been shipping out any rifles so I asked if he could call and check on the status of my order. The next day I see a post of fb about them sending out a bunch of rifles so it kind of contradicted what he told me. He never called them or me back, So I called. Then he was pissed I “disrespected” him by calling them to try to verify the order. He’s telling me there’s a strong possibility I won’t get the rifle, and nov. is saying they will honor the order cause it was placed far enough back but can’t say when due to issues getting parts. Which is all I wanted to know, I wasn’t being a dick or demanding. I’ve already waited this long and I figured they were backed up (since the gun didn’t arrive) and just sent an email to the dealer inquiring. So I’m still not sure, when or if I’ll get my rifle
Noveske makes nice stuff, and I own a fantastic Noveske lower, but nobody makes an AR that's worth that much of a headache (even KAC).
It's like gun companies forget the basic rules of the market: if I pay for a good or service, I expect to see that in a stated timeline (or 10% over). Unclear timelines, no clear expectations on IF the product will be delivered, and being told to suck up and bear it? I'd ask for my money back (or file a dispute), and give it to someone who can actually deliver. Personally, I wouldn't accept spending my hard earned money and someone telling me to basically f* off.
Trust me I wanted to tell the dealer to pound sand but don’t want him to cancel my order on me. I’m also worried he’s trying to get me to cancel so he can sell it on gunbroker or something shady like that. Noveske was decent with me on the phone but very vague. I was told they are no longer taking orders for the gun I chose. I looked for months prior to back ordering it hoping to find one online or in store that wasn’t double the price or out of stock. Shortly after I could have bought a honey badger that was in stock locally but my money was tied up by then ( and I was “promised” to have a ghetto blaster with my name on it in 22 weeks ) and now they are on a 2 year back order. So at this point I’m just going to ride it out and hope it shows up.... I’ve been buying parts and optics and ammo for it as they’ve been available anticipating its arrival so at this point I’m committed to waiting
Sounds like the dealer is trying to pull some shady shit. Moving forward I would do all correspondence in email.
Unfortunately, the industry can be scary and I've watched lots of folks lose deposits with even smiths or companies with great reputations who suddenly quit returning messages and then eventually went under. Either they got behind, or they underestimated their costs and were losing money on each unit without realizing it. Who the smith or company is and their longevity makes a difference. It being PVA is probably a good sign. But dropping communication is in general a bad sign. The current state of firearms related purchases should keep folks from going out of business, but I think caution is still warranted for the buyer.

The "State of the Industry" needs to come to the realization that customers deserve better....bottom line!!!!!!!!
I have attempted to basically throw money (As a commercial entity no less, lol) to numerous entities in the industry over the past year.....it is a sad state of affairs.

Yes, it took a long ass time. As was stated above, once I get it wrung out it will be a very good shooter.
Every E mail I sent to Joe was returned the next day, At least I'm pretty sure it was, I don't remember ever waiting to hear from him. The first one was answered by the big dog himself, that was reassuring.
They had my barrel done ( I got updates if I asked) well in time. They waited on the action for a very long time, not their fault.
I would not worry, this shit is ass backwards upside fucking down right now. Blame the covid supply chain issues. Every single entity involved in the process of your whatever is dealing with whatever obstacles they have to navigate based on where they are located and how many people within a mile of them are drinking the kool aid!!!!

Posted a very similar thread a year or two ago. Want to say it was ~6mos wait. Apparently they lost a tag at one point, sent the wrong length barrel, and then followed up with the right one a couple days later. Excruciating. Ordered and received a Proof in between. But like others, the barrel absolutely hammers.
I'd be worried for sure, mostly like you for the lack of communication. Have you checked them on Better Business Bureau or googled feedbacks and/or reviews for them? Written them a hard copy letter? These are the things I've done when I start worrying.
Waited for almost a year on a barrel from a Black Friday deal couple years back from PVA. Followed up every couple months and always got the 2 week treatment!!!
Y’all should find a gunsmith that doesn’t use his time on social media. Maybe a guy that doesn’t even have a Facebook page they still build great rifles. Problem is A lot of guys want a cool laser emblem on the barrel.
