Hey guys first post, ive been reading on here about barrel length and such. I have a 26" sps varmint .308 that is great as a bench gun but i think i want a little more all purpose use out of it so i would like to shorten it down to 20 (maybe 18" but im still researching that)so i can hunt with it to take deer, coyote, and hog. Not a whole lot of gunsmiths in my area so i was wondering if i should mail it off and get it shortened by Remington or someone i find online or just sell and get the SPS tactical version. Any imput is welcome on selling, shortening, length, price i should pay etc. thanks guys.

I had my sps-v chopped to 22" and it is much easier to handle and maneuver. I also have a SPS-T and shooting 168's there was only 50 fps difference between the two lengths.
I have them both in HS precision LTR take-off stocks (the narrower ones), and scoped they weight 10.2 and 10.8 lbs.
Out here I paid $80 for a cut and crown. I prob could have found it cheaper, but the smith I use is top notch.

I don’t know if it will help you with your question but I ran a test last year shooting identical loads in my varmint and my tactical with 155g and 175g loads powered by varget and the 26” barrel was clocking ~100fps faster +/- 5fps.
What I tend to advise when the Varmint vs. tactical question comes up is go with the tactical if most of your shooting is 800 yards and under. Over 800 yards and that extra velocity is desired. But if I were to cut my varmint down I’d likely go with something in the 22-23” range. It shouldn’t be that hard to find someone local, start asking around at gun shops, just be sure to investigate there past work if possible first.

Hey Chucky, no way, go with an 18 inch barrel and dont look back. Shoot the 155 Grain bullets and they will do great for you. That will be a pretty awesome hunting gun, and thread it for a suppresor someday, and BAM, all of a sudden you have a awesome hunting set up

If your shooting 300 yards max, I can’t fault his logic. I was around 2740ish with 155’s in the tactical without pushing things beyond Hodgdon’s guidelines. Both Varget and imr8208 are great temperature stable powders for the 155’s.

+1 on cutting it down to 20ish. A 26" barrel is pretty long for a hunting rifle.

Personally, I would go 20". I have an LTR and I love it! No, down to what is really important, the cost!
If you have the funds available and would like a new rifle, just buy a SPS Tactical. If you have the funds available and don't care abt having a new rifle, just send the SPS Varmint off and have the barrel cut down and recrowned. Take the $500 that you save and upgrade the stock, glass, ect, ect.

20" makes a very nice all-around rifle that is still capable at long range.
However if you want to chuck 155's at max velocity, you need the extra barrel length.
I only have one 26" .308. The rest are around 20".

I have a AI AW that used to wear a 24" barrel. It was shot out, so I installed a new 20". Love it. Average velocity was 2760 before, I think 2750 after. Long range hits arent any more difficult than before, and since the velocity didnt change (shot out vs shorter) my dope is still on. Just remember, the shorter your go, the louder it gets!

Sell the SPS V and pickup an SPS AAC-SD (20" 1/10 twist w/threaded muzzle). Replace the stock later w/Hogue full length bedding block stock. It will easily run FGMM 175s to 800 yds.

^^ I agree, the most you will get for a used SPS_V is about $400-$450, the tacs run $575 -$625. For the price difference one can get the rifle cut/ crown, threaded, and maybe a RWS brake or a bolt knob as well.

I have a 24, 20 and 18....
I am NOW leaning towards a 16". I have found that the 18" really is NOT sacrifcing anything... but GAINS alot by being VERY manueverable.
A nice 16" with a compact fold over stock would be the ticket for me....

Just go to your local sporting store and check out a sps tac or savage 10fp (or any other build that sports a 20" barrel".... Then make your decision... Getting a factory barrel cut twice is 1/3 of the price for nice custom blank barrel.

allow me to make a bit of a point here...
Cut and crown will cost you money...
Do you want to ever mount a brake or can? Threading will cost you more money.
I brought all of this up to a buddy of mine who has a .308 SPS and wanted to have it chopped to 20" and threaded, then replace the stock with an HS take-off... Until I added it all up for him, to include what he had into the gun and what he could get out of the gun... then the fact that I bought my 20" threaded 5R for $1019...
He's selling his stainless SPS and buying a 20" threaded 5R. Actually ended up being less expensive this route, and he's not sinking money into a barrel that isn't worth the labor cost.
Anyway, just thought I'd toss that out there- sometimes it's just a better idea to buy what you want rather than have something modified to what you want.

Barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy (velocity yes which effects down range performance but not accuracy).
An 18" barrel would serve you well... Thread it while your at it just for better resale down the road when/if you decide to upgrade.

More then enough buddy... I feel fine taking mine to 800m and it's very consistent.

A 1/10 twist will run full power & subsonic loads better than 1/12. Keeps his options open. A normal cut, crown, and thread will run about $200 to $250. It can be done cheaper, but how much is a suppressor baffle strike worth?

Yeah I was speaking more in-line with hunting specific bullets and what manufactures recommend. For example all of Nosler's .30cal bullets have a minimum recommended impact velocity of 1800fps.
So anyway, just speaking in terms of depending on the bullet and your desired application/effects, there may be a minimum velocity for it to perform as expected.

wow 200 seems high for that job. Of course a supressor is expensive but i think that quality work can be had for less. Learning alot here guys keep it up.

Moved to a manners t-4
And currently resides in a B&C light tactical
And that configuration brought this guy home from Montana this past fall, also using Berger 168 VLD at the short distance of ~175y

i spend my time on the pistol, rimfire, and 150yd ranges but i do believe there is a 1000yd range on the grounds i just have never had a need or reason to go look for it. Its a huge club with fishing, atv trials, skeet range, pistol ranges, bow ranges. Really a nice place.

I shoot out east where we don't really have lots of long stretches of land unless we can get a farmer to let us out on his property to shoot. I've got two 308s, a bolt and a gasser (waiting on glass), and they're both 18". I shoot the 155 Scenars in the bolt, and it performs well out to about 900 yards (the farthest I've shot it thus far). Here were the results:
890 yards in Louisa, Virginia five shots:
That target is 10" x 17". As you can see, if I hadn't pulled my second shot up and left, I would have had a 3-4" 900 yard group. I am by no means a great shot, though I'm working hard to get better. I don't feel handicapped at all have shorter barrels because I think they do just fine with the 308 cartridge, especially loaded with a stiff 155 Scenar.
If you do decide to chop, re-crown, and thread your barrel, take this opportunity to research the builders here on the Hide and have it done by the best. It may cost a little more or have a little longer turnaround, but the chances that you'll be satisfied with the work is much better than if you go with someone you find in the phone book. Plus, if you really get into LR shooting, you'll eventually start getting custom rigs and it's good to have smiths with whom you feel comfortable working. Just my 2 cents.
