Should I go 260 Rem?

Needing some guidance and really just wanting some ideas from my comrades on the Hide. I have rifles in just about every popular caliber, but I have never owned a 260 Rem. Need to scratch that new rifle itch knowing I don’t need it. This idea came from lowlight talking about it on the EDS podcast so I figured I would give it a try. It’s purpose would be for everything from training, hunting and comp. Either it will be custom built or an AI. Let’s hear some of your experiences with this caliber and whats good/bad about it.

The fact that you call it a 6.5 and we all know you mean the creedmoor kinda sums things up.

The .260 isn’t really different. Do a 6.5 SLR. A wildcat but an easy one with no fireforming.

It’s the same 6.5 goodness without the Facebook marketing-wank origin from Hornady. What does that mean in the field - nothing at all, sans maybe an extra 40 FPS on the 260 versus the 6.5CM.

Like Supersubes stated, 6.5 SLR would be cool. 260 AI wouldn’t be a terrible choice either. 6.5 PRC will probably be my next build personally.

Straight up 260 Rem would be a waste since you already have a 6.5CM platform.

I run a run a 260rem in my AT and I love it. Factory ammo is avaliable thru hornady with the 130gr ELD, and it shoot very good. I believe prime will have a 260rem load as well soon.

If you are going to use it for hunting, I would go 6.5 PRC. I had a .260 Rem and loved the rifle and caliber. It was very accurate and had just a little more punch than the 6.5CM. If the 260 satisfies your needs go for it. Don't let the masses here say it is an outdated caliber. There are some that even say the .30-06 is outdated. Ha! Each caliber has its strong points and intended uses.

I have two 260s as well as two 6.5 Creedmoor. I bought the 260s years ago before the Creedmoor became popular. I love the 260 but there isn't anything it can do that the Creedmoor can't. Not really any need to have both, but I very rarely sell off my guns.

I have a pair of 6.5 creedmoors and while they are good guns I’ll never get rid of the 260. Nod definitely goes to the 6.5 for factory ammo but I’m loading my own so that really doesn’t matter.

I bought a 260 a while back because I got a great deal on it and was actually just going to sell the barreled action and keep the test for my next build. But, after shooting it a little bit i really grew to like the 260. It was an absolute hammer and fed smooth as silk. Probably my favorite thing though is how easy it was to reload. Can used a ton of different powders and bullets and shoots great

Yes I reload for my 6.5CM and my 6CM. But all my other rifles I buy factory.

I like the PRC, but it seems that it would be a little much for an all around especially in comps and training. It would be the ideal hunting round though.

I just went with a 260. Didn't want to add another caliber, but I like the extra case capacity over 6.5 C. My thought is I can always re-barrel it and Lapua brass is cheaper for 260 right now.

Not really generational as the .260 has been out since 1997 and the 6.5 Creedmoor since 2007 but it's more about people hating something that is popular. Pics above come up. Is what it is but the only thing you gain going to .260 is about 50fps and the ability to post stupid memes. If you want it then get it. You will use the same primers, powder and bullets that you do with the Creedmoor so you are ready to load for it. Probably ask yourself why you did it down the road though. LOL

They are nearly identical. The advantage comes from the Creedmoor's popularity. More options (both factory and reloading) means better prices and availability.

No one saying better but basically the same for Ballistics and he already has a Creedmoor. He won't be getting any real advantage except having to buy more equipment. The .260 has 1 grain more case capacity. That's it.

Good morning,

Went through similar mental gymnastics a couple years ago and ended up going 260. (I do not own a 6.5C yet) Reasons for going 260:
1. Wanted a shorter barrel length (22") for suppressor so the little extra capacity got me back to 6.5C velocity. Proved by exact same come ups out to 600 compared to a friends Ruger precision rifle in 6.5C with a 24" barrel.
2. Use for the rifle was hunting so figured the 40 degree shoulder of the 260 might feed better than the 60 degree shoulder of the 6.5C.
3. I hand load so the meager factory offerings in my area did not dissuade me. But the previous Prime offering was a hammer in my Tikka so I haven't loaded for it yet.
4. Can resize 7mm08 or 308W cases if needed. But the Prime brass I've saved up sort of negates this need.

Any reason to buy/build a new rifle is just fine. Most of the rifles and optics we own we really can’t justify, other than we wanted it. If you want a 260, get it. Is it better than a dozen other cartridges out there? No, but who cares. If you want it and have the funds, buy it. The more guns the better.

Unfortunately I had to sell my Savage because I was heading to Korea at the time. Now I have a rem 700.

All has pretty much been said already. The 6.5 Creedmoor is a modernized .260 Remington and I consider them to be the same when at the range. When a new shooter asks which they should choose, I tell them the same thing.

As far as the reloading vs. not argument, I don’t use that anymore since in the past few years there have been a number of new and updated factory offerings in .260 and at reasonable prices. 6.5 Creedmoor still wins the sheer availability contest, but it’s not the big divisor that it used to be.
