Should I reload?

I am new to both precision shooting and reloading. I have loaded ~100 .223 rounds on borrowed equipment. I just ordered a scope form SWFA to put on my AR-15 to begin my centerfire precision shooting.

My question to you is should I reload for my target shooting?

Right now I only go to a 100 yard range, but in the near future I will be shooting farther, hopefully out to the effective range of the .223 before I move up to something larger.

Re: Should I reload?

Heck yeah you should start. Buy the basics for now but remember it is better to buy once instead of twice. Take me for example. I asked the same question and went out and bought the basic reloading kit. After a few years I have upgraded alot of my peices to more effecient and high quality equipment. Most reloading gear can be bought and sold without much of a loss so if you decide you don't like it or don't really need accurate ammo then you can sell it. Good luck

Re: Should I reload?

Like I said in my first post, I already have equipment that I'm borrowing so I do plan to buy my own and return pieces as they are replaced.

Also I will continue to reload my plinking rounds (no brass for Chiller

)

I guess what I really wanted to ask is if someone so new to reloading would be able to produce ammunition that is high enough quality to be useful to precision shooting training. I want to know that my shitty targets are caused by my shooting techniques, not my reloading ones.

Re: Should I reload?

IMHO, if you feel that shooting is an activity that you will enjoy for years, then yes learn to reload. Not that you don't know how to now. But we all learn as we go. I feel that it is easier if you buy quality the first time. The benefits are that you only buy once, plus you get the benefit of getting better at your reloading skills on good equipment. There is a wealth of good solid information on this site. The more trigger one gets the better one should get.

Re: Should I reload?

Yes, prep all your brass the same and work up a load. Start at min. powder charge ajnd work up .5 grains until you find a spot were they all group better than the other. i do 10 rounds at each charge weight and shot all at 100y really trying to aim at the same spot on target it don't matter where the group is as long as it tight. then you reload more just like it and zero to it. Then keep the same load go until you get the dope setup.

The answer is "Yes" if you want to improve your accuracy, and save money.

Re: Should I reload?

Thanks for all the encouragement guys. I went and bought some Hornady 68gr BTHP bullets and some primers and got a 50 round development batch whipped up. As soon as my scope comes I'll get to see how I did.

I believe what you're asking regards methods for load development. Check out Optimal Charge Weight and Ladder Method.

Re: Should I reload?

Thanks after a quick Google search I found some info on the topics Winchester 69 posted. I will do more reading, though, like everyone has said, I'm gonna just do it.

Re: Should I reload?

If you don't want to go broke buying factory shit you better start reloading.Get a good video and alot of good books on reloading. Also ask alot of questions to other reloaders. And dont buy any shit reloading equipment.

Re: Should I reload?

Yes you should.

1. Its fun and entertaining.
2. Its an easy way to pass time.
3. Its sure is nice to see your groups get smaller the more you work with loads.
4. My wife doesn't bother me when I'm in the reloading zone.

Re: Should I reload?

When I started in 1972 I didn't know ANYONE in our county that handloaded anything but shotshell. I knew one man that loaded 20 gauge. I went to a store in Knoxville (in the neighboring county) and bought a book. I never asked "should I". I said "I want to". And I wanted to do it the best I could. I have ever since, read everything I could find on the subject. I have been able to sit and talk with some of the best shooters in the world. And basically they all say the same thing. You can never be too safety minded, and there's always something else to learn.

Good luck.
