Should You Tip For Covid Takeout?

I’m of the reservoir dogs belief that tipping should be for services rendered- and if you aren’t refilling my water, why the hell am I paying you to bring me food that the chef prepared.

What is the hide consensus on this momentous matter?

I am fortunate enough to have suffered no change in my employment or pay status during this fun time. As a result I do tip, though previously I was the same as you. At the end of the day someone has to prepare the food, clean the facility, man the phones etc...

Absolutely not. Tipping is for servers that wait on you dot-dot-dot make sure you have utensils that are clean, bring you an extra plate, bring you condiments, make sure your tea water or any other beverages full.

I've significantly increased the amount I tip, especially on the road for work where I expense the meal anyhow and while my tip I can expense is capped at 20%, I pretty much always throw in a few bucks of my own as well. My wife and I do very well for ourselves, and those young men and women still working a restaurant floor, even if it's takeout, are not. We both came from very poor families, we know how that shit is and we both scrounged ourselves from the bottom up, so you're damn right I'm going to pass that on to others who are also working their asses off to do the same.

Look at it this way, are they sitting at home making the extra unemployment money from our tax dollars, or are they still busting their butts to make a living and be a member of the workforce doing good in our communities?

A scrooge or a Mr. Pink I am not...

Most servers have to split their tips with the full wage employees and it's ridiculous. Bullshit owners and managers do this to them and it's stealing from the employee that earns less.

Other then fast food I tip 15-25% depends if take out or dine in. And yes even when I pick it up. Not servers fault there at half capacity or less. Rent still has to be paid etc.
If service/attitude is bad I throttle it back, but still tip.
My wife was a server while in NS school, BSN school, MSN school, & now has a PHD. So I may be a little biased.

Since China screwed over everyone and nobody had the balls to repay them with nuclear tipped cruise missiles from our buds underwater, I tip more than normal to help the older folks at my local joints. These folks are all social security age, or close, and they still show up and put up with shit for a crap wage. The punk kids that live for free in their basements, smoke dope and do the “peaceful protest” shit need to be strung out on a hill of Fire Ants. The extra cash is appreciated, and I don’t have to eat my wife’s new-age diet cooking, whatever the hell that is. Trump has time left. He should nuke China and Iran and lie about doing it. I had a pizza delivery job the first time gas was $4/gal. Had to use my own vehicle and pay my own gas, no delivery fee through the restaurant either. About half of customers didn't tip, others just rounded up to the nearest buck. Worst fucking money losing job I've had.

Unless they're total shit bags, please tip delivery drivers.

I tip the kids bagging groceries and chashier every time around the holidays. Usually kids off of school or back home trying to make a few bucks. Ill give the cashier and bagger 10 bucks each time. They look at me like they won the lottery. They work hard and stand there all day bagging groceries and still put on a smile with some conversation.

My wife used to waitress in college and a few years afterwards. The amount of crap they deal with is just crazy. We over tip when they do a good job. It makes up for some of the stuff they have to deal with. On take out the tips go to the kitchen. Or they used to. So throwing in a few extra bucks is what we do there. But we do not tip on the whole bill. For delivery, we tip 20% as usual but nothing above and beyond like we would for a great server in a restaurant.

I am kind of surprised at people thinking waitressing is more deserving of a tip than delivering your food to your house. I might be biased because I have done it, but I have done both. Drive across town in my own car, go up and down the block because no one can affix numbers to their house that represents their address. Trip over the kids bikes in the dark because no one turned the porch light on. Almost get bit by the dog because no one put it away. Get told the bristling snarling dog that is lungeing at you would never bite you. Get out in the rain, snow and cold, slip up people's ice covered unkempt walk ways. I made better tips waiting tables because I refilled a glass with water, and smiled. I was only smiling because I could see down your wife low cut top whilst standing up here. Nice........sometimes........but always look.......

The ones that would really piss me off were college and school events. I have delivered up to 200 pizza's and 40, 2 liters, and not received a tip. "Oh thank you so much for delivering this, you have no idea how much we appreciate it." OHH yes I do. $0.00. The 5 the people waiting for their orders wallets tightening up the whole time a futz around here. There is always 20 people standing around doing nothing that could have picked it up.

Also try to shop local. Many mom and pop stores are struggling. So buying something on a visit helps. The only time I really didn't was in summer at a LGS that thought that $20 for a windowless Gen2 PMAG was worth everyone's time/money. Since I spent $16 a pop for Gen3 windowed a few weeks earlier at a different LGS...

And don't limit this to gun stores. I suspect most members have lives/interests outside firearms. If you can support those stores too, do so. Yeah, Amazon/internet is easy, but buying local will help make sure they will still be open when this is over.

I stopped participating in the part of society that you would normally tip. I hate the Covid restrictions, limited menus, and poor service the restaurants have adopted as the new norm with a free Covid pass so I’ve opted out for now. There’s a coffee place I used to go to regularly at work. I don’t even have to order anymore they just type it in when they see me. I try to stop by there if I’m near by. $4 cappuccino gets a $5 tip. Those people deserve it.

During Covid my tipping has gone up because I know that class of employees is hurting. I live in a college town with service industries being the major employer. I’ve been tipping my local bartender $5 on a $10 growler fill, $10 on a $40 pizza pick up order (I don’t use delivery), etc. I tend to go to the same places, so the staff recognizes me and is happy to see me coming. Some might call me a sucker, but I don’t want the small businesses to go under or these kids trying to scratch out a living to go hungry.

Pre Covid I would tip a very high percentage at a small bill restaurant, and in the 15-17% range at expensive restaurants. The waitress at a small diner where a ticket for two people is under $30 works just as hard as the waitress at the expensive restaurant where the bill is $60+ for two. Watching someone get the $6 breakfast special and tip a buck after they got good service is kind of disgusting.

Yeah I had a few drive off and claim that I gave them the wrong address so they could get a free meal (Uber Eats)... not an insignificant percentage. Times are crazy.

Only with superior service. If you are dropping food off (ala uber eats, delivery etc) at the front of my building, and not coming up to my floor to drop at the door, no tip.

I’ve worked as a server and delivery driver.

I tip between 5% and 100%. Usually around 20-25% depending on how the bill rounds up. If you can get me in a good enough mood the tip will be huge.
I’ve also tipped $5 on a 100 before because it was awful service. I always write a note when it’s shitty service and explain why they are getting a small tip. That way they get the point and improve for the next client.
Note for exceptional service as well. That way they get it and keep working hard!

I’ve punished poor service with a small or even no tip before, but I’ve also handed whatever tip to the waitstaff and tell them why I dropped the amount or written it on the receipt if they vanished. If I happen to get that same person again they seem more attentive the second time and I tip accordingly. I’m sure I end up with “unclean” food sometimes...

My buddy used to take a stack of ones and put them on the table and every time the waitstaff messed up he would take a dollar off the stack. He would tell the waitstaff the deal when they took the drink order. Some got the entire pile and others got just a buck or two. I always gave him shit for it and broke him of the habit, now he tips very well.
