Sidney Poitier dead at 94

I remember first seeing him circa 1963? in a movie while flying in a Boeing 707 at about 35,000 feet. I believe it was 'Lillie's of the Field." Quite ground breaking at the time for a black man to have the lead role.

Lillie's of the Field was a dang good movie. Saw it as a young kid. 'A amen, a amen, a amen amen amen. Sing it over..."

Pure class…

One of my favorite movies is “In the Heat of the Night” with Rod Steiger. Outstanding who done it with so many role reversals and twists.

Great human being and it’s a shame there are not more stars like him… a leader by example… the example he set with his life!

RIP, Sir. You will be missed.

Yes. I remember reading his book. A calm gentleman of poise and sincere honesty. So often you find that when people write autobiographies, they tend to exclude the messier details that other lesser men would deem unsuitable for their personal image. Not Sir Poitier. As Oliver Cromwell said, "Warts and All". Lends a credibility to the rest of the book that I found refreshing.

"Well, that leads to me and the chicken. I hadn’t achieved an erection and it worried me --- how in the hell was I going to get my penis into a girl if it remained so tiny and refused to swell up as it was supposed to (according to my information)? So I looked around and picked out a good-looking chicken. A hen, naturally. Under the house, there was a very small crawl space between the floor and the ground, and it was somewhat enclosed. And I unsheathed my little dingaling, found the entrance to her damp area, and tried to “stick it to her.” But again I didn’t have enough stiffness to get in. I really tried --- and of course the chicken wasn’t too cooperative. She fluttered about hollering, squawking, and yelling “rape”. I wanted her to shut up, dammit, and hold still, but she wouldn’t. Instead, she stepped up her protest. I was very frustrated and more than a little concerned that the chicken would create such a fuss that somebody would come along to find out what was wrong. That was all I needed on top of the other exposure – for the family to find out I was trying to hump a chicken under the house! Needless to say, that chicken remained a virgin --- at least I never got into her. After that experience, I tried to reestablish the whole thing with Lurlene, but I couldn’t find conditions favorable enough. I never did negotiate another go at that lady. And then, when I was ten, my mother and I left Cat Island for Nassau."

Extraordinary actor and human being.

Yes, Lillies and yes Sir With…but don’t forget Guess Whose coming to Dinner which was a VERY brave movie at the time.

Sad he’s gone but 94?….it’ll be a miracle if I get even close to that.

Thanks for the memories, Mr Poitier

I agree, great movie and story. Another one I like is "Buck and the Preacher" not award winning but an entertaining western.

Just watched The Jackal last night.
He was basically the only good part of that movie. What a horrible rip off of the original day of the jackal. The original is fantastic. Edward Fox was a perfect jackal. Even follows the original Forsyth book pretty well.

I actually saw guess who’s coming to dinner for the first time about a month ago. I’ve always meant to see it and finally I TiVoed it. What an amazing movie in terms of how they addressed what amounted to liberal racism! Really first Rate dialogue in that movie. I should look it up but I wonder if it wasn’t a Broadway play first!

A loss for sure. Although I did chuckle when I read in the socially unacceptable humor thread “guess who’s not coming to dinner.”

Meh… it’s never too soon. Poitier probably would have laughed at it!
