had my 7stw rebarreled and have a few old boxes of 160g federal premium sierra game kings that shot the best of the several factory ammo varieties i tried (top left). soft point boat tail. also shot some 175g doubletap nosler partitions that shot good but not quite as good (bottom middle). both should be good enough within 4-500yds, my self-imposed range on game. are the game kings solid for elk or should i stick with the partitions. also have a box of fed 160g trophy bonded tips on order to try. thanks!

If the Trophy Bonded's will group, that will be the bullet to use. I would take the Partitions over the Gamekings. Just my opinion.

I have had great luck with SGKs in several rifles, calibers and bullet weights on game up to elk. SMKs as well. If it shoots well, use it.

One of the two worst performing bullets on game I ever witnessed was a NP. 180gr @ 3200+ from a .300RUM well under 200 yards. Took 4 shots, all well placed. Swift Scirocco was the other one.

That weight NP at that speed is completely outside of that bullets performance envelope, of course it did poorly.

nosler is saying min velocity of 1800fps and unlimited max, above. do they somewhere else go into more details? happen to know the min/max of their 175g 7mm partition, what i will most likely be using, unless the trophy bonded tips shoot much better.

Just because a bullet manages to hold together, doesn't mean it still has enough remaining sectional density to do the job as it should.

Think of it this way, what do you think would happen if you loaded a 300WIN with 180's and shot an elk 6 inches from the muzzle? Do you think it would penetrate reliably? Or do you think it would instantly flatten to the size of a quarter and vaporize a big chunk of muscle? That bullet loaded to that velocity at 200 yds is pretty much the same scenario.

I'll admit I am biased in that I think the 300RUM is quite possibly the most retarded big game cartridge to ever be produced as a factory cartridge. Elk and bear aren't groundhogs or prairie dogs. If you think you need more horse power, then step up in caliber. The 338RUM is an excellent cartridge, it is a ballistic twin of the 338 Lapua.

I loaded some 160 grain partition for a buddy of mine (270 winchester) for our elk hunt. If I remember correctly, MV was somewhere around 2700 fps. At 200 yards, that bullet went in the right ham of a 500 lb cow elk, and came out the chest between the neck and left shoulder. I wouldn't have taken that shot, but the bullet did it's job.

I’ve been seriously thinking about loading up some 160gr partitions for 270, I’ve heard great things about how partitions do in heavy-for-caliber loads.

Then why does Remington and Nosler load them in their factory rounds at or above those speeds?

I have never heard of an NP having a "Max velocity" cap. Nosler website states 1800fps Min, Unlimited max, with photos of the .308" NP expansion @ 3200fps.

Also, what do you think a 175 SMK from a .300RUM @ 3350fps MV would do on an elk @ 160ish yards? Bang Splat?

I can tell you. It will knock the ever loving piss out of one and leave it stone cold dead the second it connects.

My daughter's first elk when she was 11.

Nice elk, I have no idea what a 175 SMK has to do with a comment on a Nosler Partiton though.
