Sig 716 PR G1.. long range/CQB?

Hello all
So its been a while since I've done any kind of build...
But here is what I have...
I just picked up a nib...Sig 716 PR
Gen 1 rifle
It has all the bells and whistles
Magpul furniture, sights,etc
H2 buffer

My goal.....
A CQB than can reach out and grab when needed!

I've been looking at POF,LMT,LWRS...
But his Sig presented itself at a good deal in a trade...

So basically I'm looking to put together a nice solid build
New trigger
Forearm[lighter/longer)
1-6 or 1-8 optic
Possibly different furniture..haven't decided...
Possibly an 18 inch barrel
Nice brake... can compatibility

Has anybody done a build similar to what I'm thinking?
If so.. what are the do's and don'ts I should be aware of?

And lastly... is this Sig a good base platform for this type of weapon?...or...
Should I maybe think towards one of the others I mentioned?
I've owned sig piston rifles before and they ran like clock's

I'm just not sure as to what can be changed(barrel, guards,etc) on the Sigs...
Any insight or thoughts would be welcomed and appreciated!

Going to be hard pressed to change the barrel. I wanted to put a longer barrel on mine but but SIG make impossible to do so. Don't get me wrong it's a great rifle but just can't upgrade it much.I sold mine and went to new builded.

If you are looking to shit can the trigger, hand guard, barrel, FH, and stock, why not just dump the rifle and buy something that makes sense. Or maybe shoot and see how it does as is

I recently purchased a slightly used Sig 716 and am really loving it. Mine is the Gen 2 version, so it's a little lighter than yours, but otherwise pretty similar. I've been getting good accuracy out of the existing barrel, so I don't think that's really going to hold you back.

To me the two things that really need to be upgraded are the trigger and the stock. The trigger is OK (better than mil spec.) but is one component that is critical to getting the most out of the gun. I have LaRue MBT triggers on almost all of my guns. At $80 it's a no brainer upgrade. Don't have any experience with Trigger Tech and don't know if you're looking for single stage or two stage trigger. Geissele is another option, although more expensive.

As for the stock, I'm generally OK with a gun that requires a high cheek weld, but the Sig is ridiculous. You're basically going to be putting your chin on the stock to get a good sight picture. I happened to have a LaRue riser lying around, and that works pretty well. Getting a fully adjustable stock would be even better.

With respect to brakes, mine came with a decent muzzle brake, so no need to change it out. If you plan on getting a suppressor, than obviously get one that's compatible with whatever suppressor you're looking at.

Finally, with respect to a scope, really depends on what you want to do with the rifle. If you want a CQB rifle that can reach out to 7-800 yards I think you're really talking about a 1x8 or 1x10 scope. If you've got good eyesight and will be shooting mostly at steel you can probably get away with a 1x6.

Otherwise, I think you're really good to go with the stock rifle. Once you start talking about trying to replace the barrel, all the furniture, etc. you might as well just spend the money to get a GAP or a JP LRP-07.

There is not much you can do to the Sig 716. Lancer makes a handguard, you can change out the stock, grip, and trigger. That's it. Everything else is proprietary. I've looked and researched for days. Even the bolt and barrel is a strange marriage of ArmaLite and DPMS.

There is a reason they are cheap, SIG has liquidated them over the years for $1400-1600.

While it may not be my cup of tea, the sig716i tread seems kind of interesting for a 1200 dollar bargain basement rifle. While sig qc has always been hit or miss, I think I would roll the dice on that over alot of the mix masters that are floating around these days.

They have been through a few gens (Suprise sig) and every one gets blown out to wholesalers like Cabelas and CDNN.

Complete fucking waste of money that will just depreciate over time into shit siting in some bubba's closet or on a pawn shop rack.

On the Flipside you can buy a gun that is modular, you can get parts, as new inovations come availible, take advantage of them ect. Look at the SR25, they have done nothing but hold or go up in value over time. Same with the MWS. Now we are getting a second breath with carbon fiber barrels and good chamberings like 6.5CM and 6ARC. Those guns will be able to grow over time and in 30 years, people will still be able to shoot them.

True that some parts are proprietary. Just like POF. And HK. And PWS. Large frame AR's aren't going to have the same parts interchangeability as AR15. Nor are piston guns.

All I can tell you is that mine has been accurate (even with cheap .308 ammo), 100% reliable, pretty soft shooting, relatively light for a piston and well put together. It's not perfect. As I said before although the trigger is better than mil spec., it's not a Geissele or a LaRue. And because of the way it's designed, the cheek weld leaves something to be desired. But for me those were both very easy fixes.

Also, not sure where you're seeing all these liquidated 716 piston guns for $1400, but let me know. At that price I'd think about buying another one.

As long as you know what you have, its all good, While i prefer my KAC and LMT rifles, I do however have a 600 dollar 20 inch A4 that I put together from PSA and you know what, its a nice little blaster. it Has a surplus P&S RAS on it as well as a MBT trigger from larue and honestly, it just works.

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on this rifle and have owned a bunch of premium rifles that you can compare it to. I've also owned a bunch of AR's including POF, PWS, HK416, LaRue, KAC, BMC, etc. and several AR10 style guns. I agree with your assessment. Of the several semi-auto AR10 rifles I've owned I would say the Sig is my favorite. The Sig is accurate with a wide variety of ammo, has been reliable and is generally well designed and put together. Although you're right it's not the best rifle if you want to do a ton of upgrades.

But then, I'm not sure what you'd want to upgrade. The lower is fully ambidextrous. There's nothing wrong with the stock barrel. Has an adjustable gas block if you want to shoot suppressed. And it's a piston gun, which I also like and will run cleaner.

As I previously said, I would swap out the existing stock and add a LaRue trigger and I think your done.

But LMT is also a solid choice - if you can find one and are willing to pay a pretty good premium.

I like LaRue MBT 2 stage trigger. Flat or curved is up to you. They also make a single stage trigger, but those seem to be less popular and I don't have any experience with them.

Why the criticism towards the 716 specifically the D.I. SIG716I? Have you handled or shot it? Was it horrible looking or poor performing? What did it do so shitty for you to dislike it so much?
I've read more than one source describe it has being developed for India's Ministry of Defense, to compete for their future frontline Battle rifle requirements. In 2019 they chose a few different platforms with the SIG716I being selected to be issued to their frontline Infantry Battalions. It is rumored their previous battle rifle, the INSAS (5.56) was wholly inadequate. They felt the SIG716I was good enough to buy 144,000 units. Hopefully it does something right. It's going to combat against the Chinese and the Pakistanis. I believe they paid about $144mil total/$1000 US per unit and they received almost the same rifle with the exception being, their 716I is full auto select, has a 6 o'clock 1913 rail, Mlok bayonet lug, and BUIS. If we ordered 144,000 MWS or SR-25's, I would hope we'd negotiate a great discount.
I understand why some may be salty, I own a 556R and SIG deplatformed my rifle and most of its support. I too was salty at first, until I dealt with SIG and they fixed issues I caused. They haven't let me down yet, and considering the support requirement neccessary for maintaining India's Ministry of Defense order, I am not worried about this rifle losing its support any time soon.
I believe this rifle is a great bang for the buck, but for the many of you who feel otherwise, can you clarify your stance? Respectfully, I would like to hear the facts or feelings as to why.
The reviews I've read from fellow owners have all been great with the exception of a complaint here and there. Most from uneducated owners.
