Thoughts on the Sig Mosquito? I've got a Walther P22 that I like a lot, but it's a bit small (I'll be keeping it regardless of my decision to get a Mosquito or not). I like the size and weight of the Mosquito better. I've heard it's a bit picky with ammo but I would have no problem feeding it mini-mags or similar ammo at least until it's good and broken in. I will not be adding a can.

I pirmarily use rimfire (pistol and rifle) for cheap plinking, cheap pistol practice, and taking friends/wife to the range (also cheap...yes, you are detecting a trend...and yes, I know I've picked the wrong way to spend my free time if I'm on a budget).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I had a Mosquito and it was great. I never cleaned it, treated it like crap, alway ran a can on it, and it worked for me every time. I have heard from many others that this is not the norm, and that it is junk. I did sell mine, because I wanted a Ruger MK II with a Tac Sol upper to run my can on. From all of the complaints that I have heard on the Sig I would not buy another one, even though my experience was completely positive. Hope this helps.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I have heard a lot of bad things about the reliability of the mosquito. The conversion for the fullsize sigs seems to be a lot better, and would allow you to truly train on the platform that you would be using.

That being said, try a Buckmark or a Ruger before you do anything. We bought my wife a p-22 because it was "tacticool," and she really liked it... up until I picked up a used Buckmark for cheap. It is stone cold reliable, I can run junk ammo through it, and it is the most accurate handgun I own. I can shoot it better than any of my fullsize guns by far.

For real, try it, you won't regret it.

+1 on this, there has been discussion on this topic befor, but my situation is the same as aacshooters, haven't cleaned it, shoot it suppressed and it has not once jammed or failed to fire. great lil gun.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I run mine with the lite duty spring and suppresed. never any problems on subsonic ore standard ammo
It's also the cammo version

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I bought one of the early ones and it was a pig. The take down lever was loose and would tie up the action. I had 10% failure to fire and about the same on failure to feed. Tried several brands of ammo with the same results. The dealer sent it back and they did not fix it but sent a new one. I got a refund. They may be better now but I've about sworn off Sig. I recently bought a 22 LR kit for my P226 and while it functions and is passably accurate it seems cheaply made, plastic magazine and cast parts. I own a Kadet 22 kit for my CZ75B as well as a Colt 22 kit for my Series 70 Colt and both are higher quality and more accurate. It you like the size look for a Beretta 22. Can't remember the model number but the older ones are single action and the newer ones are double action. Every one I've shot were accurate and reliable.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

hit or miss, my buddies got one that runs suppressed, unsuppressed, dry, wet, cheap ammo, expensive ammo and with either spring, mine doesnt run well with anything. they recommend you shooting 500 rounds through it to break it in, but its annoying to shoot one magazine through it. it sits in the safe. ive prolly put 200 rounds through it, painstakingly. it could just need shot more though

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I ran two as practice pistols for CWP and basic firearms classes. If you clean them and use the proper ammo, they're fine. If you run whatever you can get your hands on through them, they're problematic.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

Ditto, AAC I have run mine w/can w/o can , cheap ammo Stingers, match ammo. It just doesn't care. Had to switch the factory recoil springs out at first since then no problems!! Very reliable trainer/plinker/kittykat controler. Here kitty, kitty pfttt!!

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I had a P22 and now a Mosquito. Both are OK plinkers. I've managed to take some gophers with both at close range. All in all I like the Sig over the Walther. The Walther had better mags by far. If you want a regular Mosquito, send me a PM, mine doesn't see much action since I got my S&W 41

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I have a Mosquito that runs like a champ. Any thing I feed it with can or wo/can.
But if I bought another rimfire pistol it would be a buck mark and then I would get a threaded Tac/sol barrel.

Just my .2

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

Sig Mosquito, as with almost any 22LR pistol, depends on the ammo that you use. Just don't use any light loads, and try different ammo, and you'll be able to make it perform reliably.

The ergonomics of the Mosquito are nice, and the weight makes it feel like your are shooting BB gun.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I have a P22 and a Mosquito. Add to that a Sig .22 kit for my 229. Now, that said, I'm running AAC Pilot and Aviator on all of them and to say that I'm less than please with the Sigs is a understatement. Even with all kinds of ammo, springs, new mag followers for the 229 kit, smoothing, grease, talking nicely to, The Sigs are not reliable for anything. Several jams from each mag. Not happy, not happy at all. Now the P22. This thing doesn't miss a beat. Yep, small, buit reliable. If I want both big and reliable I use my Ruger MkII with a Gemtech upper. Borrow a Sig before putting out the money for a very expensive .22. Oh, not all Sigs are bothersome. My 229 is my carry gun. I trust my life with that one.

This.

I have a buddy who has a Mosquito and nothing but issues. One of the benefits of shooting .22 is being able to shoot cheap ammo, and while it doesn't require the most expensive stuff it's not the cheapest either. My Buckmark goes bang every time with everything I feed it, and has a much better trigger.

However, if you want the same controls as a bigger caliber Sig, and like working on your malfunction drills, maybe it's a good option.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I would avoid the Sig. My friend has one and he did a LOT of tinkering to get it to run good. In the process he decided to lighten the trigger by nipping a coil off the spring. He went too far and started to have FTF issues. Clearly his fault but Sig refused to sell him a spring. They wanted the gun sent in for service. Pretty crappy IMHO.

I have a P-22,Buckmark and a Ruger MK2. No issues with any so far.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I've had a Sig Mosquito for 3 or more years with an Outback on it and it runs flawlessly, I have zero issue and shoot it pretty much everytime I open the safe up, at least a half dozen rounds at a time.

I use Lapua subsonic .22 and no issues.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

I think your basically getting the same thing as the P22. Your not upgrading from your P22, same quality. Double action trigger pull on the Mosquito sucks! The way you adust for elevation kind of does too, replacing the front sight. Mine shoots right in the middle of them, high with one, low with the other.

There are better choices out there. Get a Ruger MK whatever, it'll last you a lot longer IMO. With a Pac-lite, its a great little package. My Mosquito sits a lot, I shoot the MKIII a lot more.

Re: Sig Mosquito Opinions

bought a nib sig mosquito 22lr digital camo model,,,,looked real nice, cool,,,, put 500rds thru it,,,,5 brands ammo,,,all shot like crap,,,,lots of missfeeds,,,,softball(4"-6") size groups at 10 yards was the norm,,,,you couldn't hit a rabbit if you were standing on him!
i dug out my old slab side ruger mkII,,,,shot the same brands ammo,,,,all groups were golfball(1"-2") size at 50 YARDS! SOLD the SIG,,,, will never sell the Ruger. End Story.
