I know I'm going to stir up a hornet's nest here, but I have a toss up between getting a sig or an HK for my first self-defense/plinker handgun. I think I want to go with 9mm, so I would probably go for either a 226 0r a usp. Opinions on each? How are the triggers, reliability, accuracy for each make? I know plenty of you will say glock, but I don't think I want to go over to the dark side just yet

Re: Sig or HK?

If you comparing those two, I would go with the Sig 226, I have the USPc and the 229 and my 229 absolutely kicks ass, the USPc has too many switches and levers on it for me.

However, the new HK P30 is awesome and highly recommended over the Sig, more like a Glock but DA/SA and a simple decocker in the back which is nice.

Accuracy is about the same so there is no comparison there, I have gone back and forth, but find I use the Sig 229 almost daily at work and the USPc has been retired to the desk drawer. I am bringing out the P30 this next go around, but the Sig is a work horse.

Re: Sig or HK?

I like the sig's decocker over the p30 or hk usp. It's quiet and controllable. The HK you decoket it and the hammer drops fast and loud. Prefer the p30 over the usp...seems like lots of improvements over the usp. Of course usp is from like 1993 and p30 is a 2007 or 08 design.

The deciding factor might be the trigger. P30 trigger is so so but the 226 short reset trigger is a dream. I'd look for the sig p226 new SCT model with 4 20rd mags...quite the package deal.

Re: Sig or HK?

I have never even thought about bumping the back of the slide, never hit a hammer either... I have bumped the back of a Glock when they don't go into battery, but I don't foresee an issue with the decocker on the back.

Why would "silent' decocking be an issue ? If you're going to that position after cocking it, chances are you're in a good place?

I sort of think it is speculating on a problem that doesn't exist both the sound and the position, but that's me.

Re: Sig or HK?

I personally like the trigger on the Sig better than the HK. The plastic trigger on the USPs I've owned were always a bit "creepy". A well broken in DA/SA on a Sig has always been what I compared any pistol trigger to.

I remember finger-fucking a P30 a year or so ago and really like the ergos, but I can't remember... does it have the same trigger as the USP or did they redo it into something 1) metal and 2) crisper?

Been seriously thinking about picking one up lately.

Re: Sig or HK?

I have 3 Sigs and enjoy and shoot all equally well. I wish I had the same experience with HK. They, like Sig-Sauer, are great weapons however, do not fit me well. I shot the one HK that I owned well from a rest but could not reproduce the same with no rest. The Sigs, 226, 220 and 239 that I own just "fit" me.
I do not think you would go wrong with either IF it fits your hand and ergonomics.

Reliability: I have owned my P226 9mm since 1987 and have only had one jam which was quickly remedied with a new spring kit. None since and none on the P220 or P239

Re: Sig or HK?

If you compare a Sig 226 vs. a USP, then there is no question IMHO, that the sig 226 is better. That is my go to gun in 9mm. When it comes down to the compact version i.e., Sig 229 vs. USP compact, then I would favor the USP compact. This is because the USP compact fits better in my hand. I think that is the rate limiting step for most people with smaller hand. The problem with the sig is the grip is a bit thicker. The trigger reach is a bit longer also with the sig. Accuracy wise, I think both guns are performer. It boils down to which one fits your hand better, I think.

Re: Sig or HK?

has to be something, because there is no reason to have your hand there shooting a pistol... you clearly have to go for it, it's not big, and it's not an easy push.

Tell me, "being" there, what drill could possibly put your finger there because a hand won't do it, it has to be small enough to fit past hammer and the slide without hitting the edge of the slide.

I'm sitting here with it in my hand and unless I physically want it decocked, I can't figure out how to do it otherwise. Are you suggested a new shooter some how accidentally did it, or an experience shooter did it ?

Re: Sig or HK?

P-30's got my vote.. I bought my dad the standard length barreled P-30 and He loves it. Best ergos I've ever held onto. Accuracy's fantastic. I kinda want the P-30L just cause I like longer barrels verses shorter. Curious to see if H&K comes out with a tactical threaded barreled P-30...That would be worth waiting for...Anybody heard anything about future P-30's? Anybody fixed a P-30 with a suppressor yet?..SmokeRolls

Re: Sig or HK?

I cast my vote for the Sig P226. I have had one in .40 cal for about 5 years now and after a few thousand rounds have never had a failure of any kind. Ergonomically it fits my hand perfectly, accuracy is better than my semi-custom 1911, and the trigger leaves me nothing to be desired. All in all I love it.

To be fair, I have no experience with the new H&K P30 but in my eyes the Sig P226 would be a hard act to beat.

Re: Sig or HK?

I'm with Frank on this one... Sig P229 gets my vote... Love the P226, but the slightly smaller grip makes it soooo easy to conceal carry.

Either way, you've got an excellent weapon.

I wish but I don't exactly have the funds for both. Thanks for all the helpful responses guys, definately helps a lot!

Re: Sig or HK?

Ok after reading all your responses, I think I feel pretty set with the sig 226. Completely understand that some of you like the 229, but after I handled the 226 it just felt right in my hand and seemed like just the right size. Is there anything I should stay away from in the 226 make, such as are some of the older years crappy or some of the various 226's just not made well? Or are all the 226's pretty much good quality all around?

Re: Sig or HK?

I have shot many Sigs, thats what my brother owns. P226, P229, P245. I like the HK better myself. I own a few of them HK USP Compact 45 and a HK USP Custom Combat 45. Both of my HKs have never given me any problems. But I have seen my brothers Sig jam a couple of times. The one that jamed was the P245. You really can't go wrong with either gun. Both are very high quality and the accuracy of them are equal. Just get the one that fits your hand the best.

Re: Sig or HK?

I've owned seven HK pistols and I still would give the vote to Sig on this one. I've never owned a Sig but have shot a number of them and they just seem better built, better triggers, etc.

Re: Sig or HK?

Find a friendly range that has a case full of handguns and rent them both for a few boxes. Your gut, your heart, and your hand will answer the question for you.

I am sitting in a big chair in a quiet room. Beside me there is a computer bag. In a small compartment of the bag is a P226 I bought in 1991. All is well. One of my best friends is the HK rep. I don't go against my best friends often...

Re: Sig or HK?

Given your choice of Sig 226 or H&K USP, no question, go with the Sig 226, UNLESS that is, it just does not fit your hand.

USPs seem to me to have a bit too high a bore axis, too long a D/A trigger reach when carried hammer down and an "odd" feeling, to me anyway, S/A trigger re-set. USPs work and are accurate well made pistols no doubt and they serve many folks well. They just seem to me unnecessarily snappy and slower during hammers and pairs as compared to contemporary pistols, including the Sigs.

Do not fear the "Dark Side" either, good work can be done with the Austrian polymer pee shooters.

Re: Sig or HK?

In the 9mm I'd go sig. I have owned a 226 in 40 S&W and loved it. Sold it to get the HK USP Tactical in .45acp and love it even more. From what I understand however, the usp tactical 45 has a match trigger whereas the 9mm version does not. In the 45, the USP 45 tactical is the one to go to IMO, larger mag capacity, match trigger, adjustable sights, threaded.

In the 9mm though, the smoothness of the sig would outweigh the 9mm usp without all the added features available on the 45acp usp tac. The sig 226 is perhaps the finest of all the 9mm pistols available. Just my $.02

Re: Sig or HK?

Sig all the way for me, have had two 229's, my current duty pistol is a 229 Elite with the beaver tail, love having it for those follow up shots! I need to post some pictures in a new thread...

Re: Sig or HK?

I have both pistols and I prefer the Sig by a large margin. When I was teaching a couple guys in my unit how to shoot pistols, I took the HK and Sig to the range so they could handle and fire them together to find the best fits. They're both buying Sigs in the next couple weeks.

Whoever gave the advice to go to a range where you can rent both pistols was dead on. Just do a side by side comparison and discover what you like best. The trigger setup on my Sig is far superior to my HK in both D/A and S/A and that's the real advantage in my book.

Re: Sig or HK?

Both are good I'd take a GLOCK over either, BUT. Out of the two I'd take the HK. Both are accurate and well made guns. However, the sig isn't as rugged when it comes to elements.
.
My old 220 broke twice and was repaired by my armorer. Then sent back to factory twice for a different issue. Finally I have a new one which I havent broke yet. HOWEVER, I have many many more rounds through other pistols (GLOCK) that havent broke and still work as they should. Can't say the same for the SIG. As far as the HK I havent put enough rounds through it yet to tell. However, I do know I dont need to baby it when things get humid and wet. *Sig..rust..oil oil oil.
.
Good luck and enjoy

I've never had problems out of two Sigs I've owned. One I haven't used hardly at all however but the other (Nickle 226) has been used quite a bit and I haven't had any hiccups with it.

Here's a good video if you haven't already seen it about the Sig Combat pistol.
