Re: Sightron SIII SS 8x32x56 Deal or pass?
I have a Sightron SIII 8-32X and it's a fine scope. I bought mine based on a couple of articles in FCSA (Fifty Caliber Shooters Association) magazine. Those guys ABUSE scopes, and I trust them to tell the truth.
The first article was a full review, and the guy couldn't say enough good things about the scope.
The second was an informal 1000 yard test in which they compared it to a Nightforce and another scope, setting up targets that tested resolution discrimination and color fidelity. The Sightron equaled the NF in most tests, and beat it in a couple.
I love mine, although honestly, my old eyes have a tough time with the exit pupil at anything above 24X.
As for the reticle, if you know the yardage and have ballistic charts for your gun/ammo combo, the fine target reticle is an excellent choice. However, it is useless if you want ranging/holdover capability (which is why I bought a mil/mil reticle/turret version.)
Don't have a second thought about the quality, though. They make superb glass, and are getting a reputation for making robust and repeatable internal mechanisms. Lifetime warranty too.
$350 is a steal, but only if you are shooting at targets at a known distance (because of the reticle.)
