I was hanging out at my local gun store and a scope came in on trade. It looks like it was mounted and thats about it as far as i can tell. It came with the box, cloth and sunshade. It was a Sightron SIII SS 8x32x56 and it had the fine crosshair reticle. The price was 360.00 out the door, Should i pass or buy it up? I'm not sure what a fine crosshair reticle is used for since im new to long distance shooting.

I have a Sightron SIII 8-32X and it's a fine scope. I bought mine based on a couple of articles in FCSA (Fifty Caliber Shooters Association) magazine. Those guys ABUSE scopes, and I trust them to tell the truth.

The first article was a full review, and the guy couldn't say enough good things about the scope.

The second was an informal 1000 yard test in which they compared it to a Nightforce and another scope, setting up targets that tested resolution discrimination and color fidelity. The Sightron equaled the NF in most tests, and beat it in a couple.

I love mine, although honestly, my old eyes have a tough time with the exit pupil at anything above 24X.

As for the reticle, if you know the yardage and have ballistic charts for your gun/ammo combo, the fine target reticle is an excellent choice. However, it is useless if you want ranging/holdover capability (which is why I bought a mil/mil reticle/turret version.)

Don't have a second thought about the quality, though. They make superb glass, and are getting a reputation for making robust and repeatable internal mechanisms. Lifetime warranty too.

$350 is a steal, but only if you are shooting at targets at a known distance (because of the reticle.)

It's not really the ideal scope for the LR tactical type shooting that is usually discussed around here, but it is a good deal.

I've been looking into getting a higher powered scope for load development. If you don't buy it let me know if the store will take CC over the phone and ship it as I might be interested in it.

At that price I wouldn't expect that scope to be at the gun shop very long. I would have bought it on the spot. I have two Sightron SIII 10-50X60s and they are one of the best scopes available in my opinion.

That's an incredible deal, well worth it.

However, if the reticle isn't for you, then that is that...

Though at that price, I'd still buy the bastard, gives a guy a reason to buy another gun if nothing else
