Decided to get a bit creative with this.

    Whatcha think?

Working towards getting this thing nice n skinny so the gun makes weight.

    Fun stuff.

Looks really nice, however I don't think f-class guys care about the weight unless they are near the maximum allowance and need to shave a few ounces. Now if you make it lighter, cheaper, and stronger than you are on to something. Anyhow very nice work, you are a true artist.

We always care about the weight. the bipod is a support and a important part of the system and if i can get a bipod and have it go on a diet even better. I would rather put more weight into barrels, actions or scopes.

good on you Chris. let us know what the weight savings is between the two.

Tie the fore and aft vertical caps together and it will improve the stiffness greatly.

It may actually be lighter to make a C cross section beam with thin caps and thin webs. Some work in CAD comparing the body volumes and/or masses will tell you quickly.

Start with say, 0.05" cap thickness and 0.03" web thickness with a diagonal tension stiffener running from corner to midpoint to corner with a single cross-web stiffener to pickup the other tie.

little bit of weight saved in attached accessories can translate to a little bit more barrel and a little bit more velocity and a little bit better performance in the wind. That's the name of the game. Nice work Chad.

This is one of my little "frankenprojects" for a client. He's shooting FTR I believe and the weight is right on the borderline for the class.

So far I've pulled almost two ounces out of the legs. I'm whittlin on the base assy now. "Fluted" the sides and chewed a pocket with some skeletonized holes out on the wings.

Thats great and all but you do get to a point of diminishing returns with design work and machine time vs cost

I've already invested more time in this than I really want to admit to.

A guy at home can afford to whittle on this for days if he has the equipment. I can only charge so much for the work.

Last, every competitive shooter I've ever met has a natural born talent for stripping/bending/breaking things that one would initially consider pretty fool proof. Chit happens on and off the range.

    i've done one.

edit: instead of posting my pictures in chad's thread, here's the link to the aics on a diet: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2551146&page=1

    thanks chad.

and jason, i never did get a chance to weigh it. i'd be surprised if it was a half pound of weight loss. i may be able to dig up my cad drawing for it and estimate the weight loss.
