I recently start to make some handloads for my in laws 22-250. It's a New England break open single shot. When shot with factory ammo everything works fine, but when we shoot the handloads I made it come opens after firing almost every round. Is this something as simple as the sizing of the case? All brass was full length sized when I got it. Using Winchester brass, Nosler 55 grain bullets, and Varget powder. I have gone from low to high end of the powder so I don't think that is the problem. Thanks for any help.

Re: Single shot breaking open with hand loads

A handi rifle will pop open every time with enough free recoil.

A handi rifle in 45/70 with triple loads and not up against a shoulder will pop open.

But I don't think you can get that much recoil with a 22-250.

Doesn't sound like it is not locking up completely before the shot. I would compare the headspace of your reloads to the factory rounds and adjust accordingly. Good luck.
