I see talk a lot about these. How do I know if I need one? I have an LWRC REPR that I have yet to shoot that I put a Magpul UBR on. Just curious what the heavy buffer does..

i just had one installed on my LMT MWS yesterday because i put a UBR on it. I might be saying this wrong if i am someone chime in please. but i think its because the ubr buffer tube is smaller ment for a AR15 so to compensate for it it needs a heaver small built buffer then what comes standard. if you change out the buffer make sure and get the better spring also.

I am not well-versed in the LWRC platform, so this may be incorrect as well, but like OGS said, the Slash buffer is specifically designed to work with the Magpul UBR's AR-15 length receiver extension. Because the traditional .308 buffers are longer/heavier than their AR-15 counterparts, they don't work in AR-15 carbine length receiver extensions (or the UBR's proprietary extension). While the Slash buffers are shorter in OAL, they retain the weight required to properly function the rifle. The extra heavy (XH) buffers are for further recoil/cyclic reduction and/or for use on rifles that will be run suppressed (even in piston-driver rifles, this helps).
Clint Butler (aka "Slash") has a good bit of info on his site and he's a good guy to talk to about your specific setup/needs/wants as he is a wealth of information on these issues. Here is a link if you haven't been there yet:

Quick? Thats an understatement! I emailed around 330am and got a response shortly there after. I had to check where he was located because I was amazed. We replied back to each other about 5 times and I ended up ordering one of his buffers with a modified AR10 spring. I would def recommend his products to anyone and am glad I made this thread, should have my REPR shooting and cycling well come shooting time.

Hats off to Heavybuffer. My 308 is working great thanks to Clint's help and recommendation. I emailed question late in the evening thinking I would here something in a day or two. Checked my email in the morning and he had already sent information - he had responded in the middle of the night. Emailed another question and just happened to check my email before I went to bed, Clint had already responded. I had reservations about the price of the heavybuffer, but I'll pay extra to someone without b$tching if they're working hard and have a good product (I didn't get a response from any other offering buffers).

I put the XH in my LR-308 with UBR. She runs good with the JP LMOS BCG too.

Makes sense...I was just curious if the alleged, dreaded "carrier tilt" issue was bad enough with the REPR to justify the anti-tilt buffer that Clint makes. Guess that's a "NO" since he pointed you toward the standard CAR-10XH. That's what I run in my Armalite AR-10 carbine with an EMOD and a POF P-308 16" with a UBR. Works great...especially helps with the can running.

I run that same buffer in my REPR, cut recoil down a bit...the spring is a must!!!

I use his extra heavy buffer in my POF-308, and it does cut down on felt recoil.

UPDATE: Earlier in the evening I installed the modified Armalite AR10 spring and the heavy buffer from Slash. It cured a problem that I knew I was having but wasnt quite sure why or what was causing it. On my LWRC REPR when I pulled the charging handle back it would stick for a second and then go back into battery (I think thats the correct term). A friend of mine swore that was normal but I knew it wasnt but since I am new to AR's I never really said anything. After I installed the buffer/spring combo when I pull the bolt back it stays there until I hit the bolt release. I changed out the VLTOR stock that was on the gun when I got it with a UBR, I now know that you need the correct spring and buffer for the UBR to work on a 308 AR platform. So if any of you guys are experiencing this run the Slash's heavy buffer and spring combo.

Been going back and forth on getting one for my Franken dpms 308. It's a 22 inch white oak barreled Dpms upper sitting on a Dpms Sass lower. My LR load uses 190smks and the gun's very consistant shooting them into an inch at 100 but once in a while it will shoot them into 1 hole. I want to try the heavy buffer to see if it'll improve the groups a bit. I'll probably get one anyway since my stamp should be coming back in the next month.

The Tubbs' carrier weight system is meant to delay the bolt from unlocking as quickly. I have it in my Armalite but can't say I noticed any difference in accuracy.
I also run a Tubbs .308 flat wire spring with Slash CAR-10 buffer. I know it isn't recommended by Slash, but it works well. It did change the recoil, almost seemed like you felt two impulses rather than one. You get the rifle's recoil, then you would feel the carrier.
I put on a PWS PRC brake and there is no recoil at all now, but it is LOUD.
