sling suggestions

im sure this has come up before but im looking for a sling for my rifle. the sling i have on there right now is a piece of shit and is driving me crazy. the heavy barrel of my rifle will literaly cause the rifle to swing down on my shoulder, if i dont stop it the barrel ends up touching the ground.

any suggestions on a sling? i dont think i want something too tactical as i use this gun mostly for hunting and targets. no competitions or anything. thanks

If you don't want a sling with the buckles we also build slings with no buckles that still have the shooting loop and the thick section at the rear for a hasty support.

TIS and TAB are both very good slings. My vote is for the TIS. You can adjust your TIS sling to a "Patrol Carry" position. I would buy the TIS sling as a shooting aid first and foremost, with a side benefit of being able to use it as a carrying strap as well.

Jackh, between US Army, US Navy and USMC over 10,000, of my slings are in use being carried in field everyday, so the answer to your question is a big yes.

If it is too heavy for either a standard leather carry strap (like the Brownells Quickset latigo?) , or a TAB / TIS / Turner shooting sling, have you thought about a biathlon sling?

its not that its going to go through rigorous field use

i dont want to pay $100 for a sling thats more suited for tactical application when i could buy one for $50 that will suit me and my uses just as well...

that $50 will buy a box or two of ammo

TAB or TIS, if hiking through rough terrain and need hands free and don't have a pack then TAB biathlon sling. Good quality.

It sounds like you want a biathlon sling. It allows you to carry your barrel heavy rifle, muzzle up on your back. I can't think of any other design that would allow you to do that and not have the barrel want to work its way down. You are just fighting the law of gravity. Adjusted in "patrol carry", a normal TIS sling would allow you to carry your rifle in front of you horizontaly oriented and hands free "at the ready" so to speak.

A good sling will last you a lifetime. I would be shocked if you could wear out a TIS sling for your application. They are incredibly well built and sturdy. I would be shocked if you could wear them out in any application actually. If you some how managed to wear one out, Mike has great customer service and would take care of you. You can always look for them in the classified section if you are trying to save money. Mike will still stand by his sling even if you are not the original owner. Here is one on the hide you can buy if you hurry. If not there will be others if you look around.

I am worried I'd break the plastic buckles on the TAB sling....I got the same type release on a BlackHawk pack that got crushed...

There are many take-offs and variations but I'd still recommend for what your asking a "1907 M1 Garand M1a Springfield Armory Rifle Sling"...leather, not webbing of any sort. Use a search engine and you should find them from around $30. up to $80. for "match grade".

jackh there's no sling in the world that is going to keep a top heavy rifle upright with no support like you're referring to about your barrel swinging down to the ground. No webbing, or leather sling is going to stop that, that is a physics problem.

Like has been mentioned our biathlon sling will prevent this, but that is totally getting away from what you're wanting.

Our slings were conceived by SF snipers coming off of an Afghanistan deployment, and have been tested by US military, allied military snipers, as well as leo snipers and civilian match shooters all over the world. We've only been making slings for a couple of years now and have well over 2000 of them in service all over the world, and more coming on line every day. We have several custom rifle builders who use our slings as the issue sling with their rifle packages.

CST, like I stated above, if you don't want buckles, we offer our slings without them and that's what it sounds like jackh is looking for, and they're in the $55.00 range. If you still want buckles but are scared of one getting crushed we offer them with metal Cobra buckles. I can just about guarantee you that you won't crush one of them.

Just some information to think about.

partnered with pretty much any sling, it should solve the problem of the rifle wanting to work its way down from the heavy barrel.

if i got a TAB or TIS sling and had sling studs on the side of the stock, couldn't i carry the rifle on my back (put me head through so its diagonal on me) and it wouldn't want to move? or would the barrel still go down and the butt would come up? i think one of those gunslinger holsters would be very useful...

Go try several slings and then buy.

I don't have any experience with the rifle holster, but I'll tell you what I can do is to send you a sling set up like you like it, with buckles, without buckles, whatever swivel set up you need, whatever color.

If you like it buy it, if you don't then just send it back to me and I'll donate it to the USMC Scout Sniper school for them to hand out to someone who can use it.

Just because Triad doesn't carry our slings with no buckles, doesn't mean we don't sell lots of them. They're pretty popular with the hunting guys.

I have used the Kifaru rifle carrier. Its the only product they make, I have used I dont care for.

For that type of carry I would go with Biathalon Sling. Tab makes a good one.

i like that slip cuff one a lot. does that have a loop i can put my arm through to use it as a shooting aid if i wanted to? and then the "quick cuff" model has a separate loop that buckles in and out of the main sling for shooting aid?

You have both makers offering to help you. I agree with Tactical, I don't like the kirfu system. I haven't used it but it doesn't look like something I would be interested in. I only included it because it was similar to what you were asking about.

Both TIS and TAB will last you a lifetime. I like the TIS a little more. Both guys have great customer service. You are not going to go wrong with either. Pick one of each and then sell the one you like least. Both makers will stand behind their product.

The biathlon type sling is the only design that is I am aware of that will overcome the problem of your heavy barrel wanting to point down to the ground. Both TAB and TIS have a biathlon design.

The best advice is to try both and see which one you like better. For me my choice was TIS. Other people may choose TAB. There is a reason they make vanilla and chocolate icecream. Different people have different tastes.

Chiller, made some for some US Mil SF units a couple of years ago, and for friends here and there. Just recently found a design I liked that was different from what TAB and AI make. Have not offically marketed one yet but may change now that I am finally getting my head above water ( USMC and US Army have kept this broke back old man busy last year) I will show the final design to a few vendors at Shot and see where I go from there.

Right now best design marketed is TABs Biathalon Sling.

ok now this is all making sense. so that slip cuff sling i can stick my arm through to use as a shooting aid if i want? i might take your advice and get one of each, then try to sell the other. will i be able to sell a NIB TAB/TIS sling for nearly full price? i dont mind if i lose a few bucks on shipping or something but if these things dont hold their value very well ill be hesitant to do this.

haha i know and i very much appreciate that offer. but if i get that one sent to me for free, then buy the other one and end up liking the free one, i will still have to sell the one i bought...

i guess i should be asking what the real difference between the two is. that is, the TAB sling and the TIS slip cuff sling.

I use tactical intervention slings on both of my bolt guns. M24 and XM2010 .300win. It is perfect in my eyes for the field. I almost never use the arm cuff on my arm but when stalking it is handy as an alternate shooting aid. just wrap the cuff around an appropriate size tree limb clip your gun in rest your firing elbow on your knee and let it fly.

I used a slip cuff for a few years and liked it a lot. It had the sewn in QD swivels and I changed out stocks and could not use the sling. I went back to the 1907 style both in leather and "plastic".

Recently I saw the new TIS slip cuff buckle version and ordered one myself. I am impressed with this new design. I'll let you know more after I get some time rapped up in it.

On a side note, I tried several different slings at a sniper class a few months back. Nothing was that outstanding that I felt the need to give up on the 1907 and my HP familiarity with it. Then I saw the slip cuff QR with some of the NCPPRC guys and said now that is the ticket! I will bring it by the guys at work for a finger f'ing session next week.

You do know there is a LOT of information out there on slings. You could read, see a huge lot of information had you not wanted to be spoon fed. That way you get to know everything, not just what some people post. It really is the best way to sort out which items to buy.

OTOH, being spoon fed sure is nice

Nice of the sling makers to step up and try to help you, pity about the attitude they got.

AUJohn, been selling slings for many years. Taught me the knowledge base out there is small when it comes to slings. I dont mind questions on my slings at all. I will answer on line as long as I have time and wont take too much band width to answer. I just asked the original poster to answer me because too much time to write out every difference between all the different sling designs I make. Easiest to get on phone, see what his plans for use are and then recommend a sling to use.
