Gunsmithing Small base die for 338 lapua.

My 338 has had an ongoing problem that I think I have figured out. The rifle has always had stiff bolt lift. I have narrowed it down to a brass sizing problem. I am looking for a small base die for 338 lapua Anyone know if any of die manufactures make one, or am I looking at a special order item?

Redding has a "Pre-sizing" .338LM die in prototype.

Run your case through the first die, then through your standard full-length sizing die.

Here's a thought, i had a similar problem in a different caliber and a small base die wasn't available. It's amazingly simple..

Take the sizing die apart (removing the decapping pin) and smooth down the bottom surface of the die a .001" or .002" and try it again.

Last couple times I did this, it did the trick for me!

Just remember to lube the base of the case well. They're so thick, compared to other cases/calibers, that it takes a lot of effort and friction to resize .

Check with Harrells, they may be willing to make what you need. (The powder measure guys)
