Looking for a small base die for 223 but I’m stuck on wether to go with a body die or a full length. I don’t neck size and seems the body die would leave me with an extra step.
I use a redding body die to bump the shoulders back then use a lee collet die to size the necks. If you use a body die you will have to size your necks with something.
Depends on your chamber & brass. As stated above body die can bump your case shoulder. Small base takes your brass back to almost factory spec (you will have springback) and still have to size your neck.
Why small base? I use them but only for the initial sizing on brass I do not know its origin. If you are sizing brass YOU shot there is no need for a small base die. It will not hurt but it is not required.
I used @proff49 way of sizing. A Redding body die with a Lee collet die. I reduced the size of the collet by .002" to increase neck tension. I have shot enough .2's to know this setup is not holding anyone back.
If you use a "all in one" die you are over working your case necks and unless you anneal they will split very quickly.
Thanks guys this would be used for initial sizing of range brass. I’ve noticed some have a hard time chambering even after sizing and bumping the shoulder so I’m thinking they are a lil bulged.

Get a body die, they make life a lot easier. Yes it's another step but it's fast and you'll like the results. Especially if you're reloading for AR's. I now have body dies for all my common calibers and wish I would have done it years ago. It puts the body back in shape while allowing you to set back the shoulder .002 with your regular die. Eliminates any cases that want to chamber harder.
Ordered up a body die yesterday. It’ll be used for both bolt and AR. I segregate out a cpl different headstamps for different bolt guns than the rest gets set aside for ar use.
