smoke stacks on diesel trucks

just curious what every ones thoughts where on these ? they do look and sound cool.... but you have to use a hole saw and cut a hole in your bed that does not sound cool..

and it looks to me like when you haul things you have to be careful to not let them touch the stakes other wise 4 wheeler plastic could melt and boxes and what not could catch fire.

do you notice any loss in gas mileage ?

are stacks worth the hassle

I just can't believe the amount of asshats that waste fuel thinking that black smoke means super torque or hp. A clean burning(white smoke to little smoke) diesel not only sounds good, it looks better, especially when most of the white smoke is coming from the burning tires

oh yeah, stacks...WTF??? They look Stoopid! Besides, with the right amount of lift and an exiting side pipe, one can stop right next to a Prius and rev a bit of American Hardass into their faces as they text away!

I have a 5" Magnaflow exhaust on my CTD. (straight pipe)

I see some trucks with stacks, and they look decent, others, not so much. and yeah, you do have to watch the pipe to make sure something melt-able doesn't come in contact with it.

Now, if you want something REALLY stupid... hood stack...

well i was curious because i might have a really decent paying job if every thing goes right and was going to step up to a bigger truck from my quad cap dakota was looking at a ram 1500 sport with hemi or a 2500 or 3500 ram with the 6.7

i test drove a ram sport back around december and the 5.7 ( well any thing ) was so much better then my 3.7 and even though my truck is a quad cap the ram just had much more room in the cab.

Was leaning to the 2500 because all the reviews on ebay said the 09 and 10 2500 rams are just way better trucks all around as far as the ride and the towing and all that.

i dont tow that often maybe about 5 times a year and i dont haul that often maybe about 5 times a year or when i want to take my quad to some ones house, but like all guys i would rather have it and not need it then to need and not have

Couldn't agree more with most of the comments. I think they look ridiculous. I have an 06 dodge Cummings and all I have done is remove the muffler. It's not totally straight pipe bcuz I left the cat conv. on it. If you can find one with the 5.9L I would get it over the 6.7L. I believe it is a better engine.

I also have an 06 Cummins and am glad I got into the diesel game before all the emissions equipment is required. I've kept my truck stock and it has all I'll ever need, but when the tires need replacing I will probably level it out and go with 35's. At night, I still get a kick out of getting on the interstate with a car behind me........I can look in the rear view mirror, step on the skinny pedal and see the headlights behind me get fogged out. That, and being able to get over 20 mpg on the highway in a fullsize 4wd truck if I keep it around 2000 rpm's is what I like about diesel trucks. Plus they sound cool!

They are pretty much just for looks. If done right, they look good, but some people go overboard with the 7", 8" and even 10" stacks and it looks dumber than dog shit. Before diesel pickup drag racing got popular, most tracks required you ran stacks or a up-turned tailpipe so you would lay down a streak of soot on the track.
Here is my old Dodge that I sold a while back. When at the track, it definitely drew a crowd.

That would be the Bank's Duramax. Its a hoax, it runs on diesel, but with a shitload of methanol as well. Not to mention that engine costs more than most people's homes

Ahhh, that's why they say it burns cleaner. Of course Methanol is avaialbe in 54G drums from VP. They should sell it in gas stations.
As to cost on engines, you bet. The age old question,"How fast you wanna go son, Speed costs money"

In all seriousness, JB, you are asking for serious trouble. I know way too many people that have made major purchases (car, home or both) upon starting or on the anticipation of a new job. And due to any number of reasons like lay-offs, poor job fit, or employee is a jackass (hint), said individual is left unemployed with serious financial obligations.

I hope for your sake you show more sense out there than you do here and put off your little truck fantasy until the following criteria are met:

1) You get the job
2) You like the job
3) They feel you are capable of doing said job
4) They are financially sound enough to keep you (new guys are usually the first to go)

your dead on, i was not going to go out and buy the truck as soon as i got the job, i was going to feel out the place and see how every thing works... but between now and then i just want something to look at and "build up" in my mind lol you know how it is.

i have to be honest always been wanting the hemi dodge and almost got a sport with a moon roof and the big chrome 20" wheels a while back for 24k it had 20k miles on it nice gloss black... but if i did find one i would like to step into a diesel truck better mpgs and the engines last twice as long it not longer

What if they came factory?

My first truck was just like this.

Came with a de-smogged police interceptor 360 and a 850 CFM carb. Would get a whopping 9 MPG.

But it'd smoke the tires like a mug!

I am not into stacks at all. I would much rather see you spend your money on getting rid of that POS DPF and a decent chip to improve mileage and hp. After I chipped mine put a cold air intake filter and exhaust system on mine I not only added to the power but improved my mileage to 24 mpg.

Little Red Express Dodge= Quickest vehicle of any kind built in the U.S. in 1978.
The black one was called "Warlock" was 4wheel drive built I think in 1979.
As for the after market stacks; I personally don't care for them. They take up too much room and look kind of hokey.
