Sniper rifle build

Hi, i was hoping that you guys could help me out with a build.
This will be my first designated sniper rifle build.
I live in norway, so some components are hard to get over here.

I was hoping to get some inputs and reccomedations.

I have been talking to a company in norway to build my rifle, and here is my criterias:

.308 win
Scope
Suppressor
Bipod
Sniper stock


This is what we came down to
Remington SPS tactical
AICS stock
IOR 3,5-18x50 scope
Reflex T8 suppressor


What do you guys think?
Is there a better setup?
Is the scope any good?
Is the suppressor any good?
Is the rifle any good?
What kind of accuracy can i expect?
Am i better off buying a Sako TRG 22 or something else?

my dream build would probably be..

-Stiller Tac 30
-Manners T5a w/Manners Mini Chassis and RAD-Tac Latch finished in GAP camo
-Fluted MTU contour Rock Creek 5R barrel finished at 24" all metal finished in graphite black cerakote
-Old Remington Factory Trigger Tuned to 2.5lb
-Atlas V8 bipod
-Badger rings and 20 MOA one piece base
-Nightforce 5-22x50 with mil/mil with mildot reticle.

+ a few extra AI mags

Articsniper, I am sure you understand what you have opened your self up to by the wording of your post, but here are my thoughts none the less. First do you have a specific intended use of the rifle as to help nail down the weight, length, and caliber? In what conditions will you be shooting the rifle? If you will be shooting in fair weather then almost anything will work, but if it is to be an inclimate weather rifle that will drastically affect the build. Some considerations for an inclimate weather rifle will be: looser tolerances in the action to acomidate dibris and ice, a trigger group designed for the same, ergonomics that will facilitate the use of foul weather gear, ect.
My recomendations would drasticlly change based on these requirements. I have owned all types of rifles from short range LV benchrest to full on tactical builds to hunting specific rifles. I have after many years came to the conclusion that the tactical builds that are built for the realy nasty conditions will do just about all of it. They will come very close to the cutting edge accuracy of the benchrest rifles, and they have the flexibility to be used in all shooting secnarios.
I hope this helps, if you can answer these questions then go and get your hands on as many rifles that fits your bill, you will know which one is right for you.

well, I live in the northern part of norway so harsh weather is pretty much the standard up here.
-20 is standard temperature during winter and the rifle will be used on a 600m range and some hunting during fall laying still on a post.
I was allso hoping to do some "sniper" courses with this rifle.
I dont mind the weight since I am pretty much laying still and i wont be running around with it too much

yes, i i kind of figured out that it was the supper secret tactical sniper squirrel magnum comment that made your day, hehe

Of course i would like to buy the AW but considering the price, I am planning on building a rifle thats a bit cheaper first to get some experience shooting, experimenting and reloading before I sell my wife and grandmother to buy the top of the line rifle.

Here's some advice: Don't use the word sniper rifle, members here refer to it as a precision rifle. Also here is a link to an easier way to search for info on this forum. Most of the questions new members ask, have already been answered so use the link and do a search first.

I don't know who you are or WHAT you do for a living BUT just a quick couple of words of advice.

You say you want to build a "sniper rifle", there really isn't such a thing as a "sniper rifle". There are rifles that are pressed into duty by men in certain organizations that are charged with the tasks and duties of a sniper. Therefore it is more accurate to say <span style="font-style: italic">"that's a sniper's rifle"</span> as opposed to "sniper rifle".

So unless you've been appointed or EARNED the title of sniper, I would refrain from calling your rifle that of a sniper.

The other thing is that a lot of people on here like it when new members have certain information in their profiles filed out. I for one don't really care either way but some of the salty dogs see it as important and will give you grief over it.

Oh and before you ask common questions use the search engine. Most questions asked here have been asked before and this site archives a TON of information on pretty much everything having to do with long range shooting. Pretty much everyone here is willing to help a new member to the forum but it goes a long way when you show that you're willing to do a bit of leg work and help yourself first.

Yes, I do appologize for calling the Rifle a sniper rifle, of course long range rifle would be better.
I have used the last year or so reading every post on this forum and many other, but thats the problem, when you read a post on a forum, not the biggest problem on Snipers hide, but I feel that it is on many others, it is that you newer know if the person that is giving the answer or writing a review actually knows what he is talking about or if he has heard or it somewhere.
That is why I am asking the exact questions I would like to have answered and I am hoping to as many inputs as possible.

Using the word sniper is my fault since my english isnt that good, and its a clear description on the category of rifle I am looking for.

When it comes to my experience, I am not going to explain anything on a forum about what I do and might have done, because that is only my buisness. (in a non rude way)

I do appreciate all the good help I can get from some of the many experienced rifle guys on this forum.

Hey, no worries here, and Freezingduck sounds cooler anyhow (pun intended)!

As for the rifle, I don't run in as cold of temps as you do, but my main concern would be for the scope suffering from the cold more than the rifle. There's some other threads here that addresses the issues of the extreme cold, like this one: Shooting in Extreme Cold

Also, unless you're already sitting on a mound of 7.62x51 or .308 ammo, I would look at a magnum. The .308 really suffers in the cold at long range, and the extra power capacity of a magnum can get your velocities up to a level necessary in that kind of cold.

Another option to thwart cold weather ballistics: .260 Rem. or 6.5CM. Almost the same ballistics as 300WM and less recoil than the .308. 142's will get you to 1500 yds.

The reason I did choose the .308 win, is that its so easy to get a hold of firearms, reloading components and info about so I can learn the trade.

I am planning on buying a rifle in a more specialised caliber in a year or so, when I have some more experience.

My advise would be to pick up the SPS tac or 5R, mount the scope, and shoot the hell out of it. If you get the SPS, then get an AICS or HS stock. The 5R already has a quality HS stock on it so your ahead of the game right there. I wouldn't worry about the suppressor as a 308 has very little recoil. Take the money you were going to spend on the suppressor and buy more ammo and shoot some more. I have no experience with that scope, so I can't say one way or the other. I've heard good things about it though. My .02

Who makes the 5R rifle?
Suppressors are very common on these kind of rifles in norway, you can buy them in pretty much any gun store, and they cost around 450 usd.

How hard is it to build a rifle from components?
If you buy the stock, action, and barrel, is it possible to mount it yourself with good accuracy if you have common handyman skills?

Buy a TRG-22 , the Reflex are not a bad can , and are lite for the size , they are however steel and rust , get a stainless steel copy from Border barrels in scotland , it will not be so prone to rusting out .

Also use the 3 ring tac Sako mount if you can .
Also the older Sako 22-42 bipod is better than the new one , in my option as the old one has the feet wider apart and is more stable .

I would...
get a second hand remmy short action, true and rebarrel
with a Lothar Walther 1/10 22". ceracoat barreled action.
Forget about the reflex, does A-tec cmm do a stainless?? or
get a roedale delta 5 stainless.
Not so sure about the AICS, rather something in good composite
and save some weight.

Having owned Remington 700 based rifles, full custom tactical builds, and one Sako TRG22, I think you would be really hard pressed to do much better than a TRG22. This may be especially true for you because you are so close to Finland, and therefore may be able to get a much better price than we can get here after import.

I'm never embarrassed to show up at a precision rifle match with my TRG22. And I have never felt "undergunned" when using it. An additional benefit is that Sako makes the rifle all ready to use one of their suppressors.

I bought a 26" barrel Rem 700 sps heavy varmint and put on an AICS stock. Put a picatinny rail and a Nightforce scope on it. It worked ok and I learned a lot. The trigger is heavy though. Also, it was not THAT accurate, about 1moa. I had fun learning to handload for it. I then had it trued and rebarreled (in 260) and it is now a TACK DRIVER! (I shot one .10" group, and 3, 3/8" groups in a row with it).

It is a good way to go. You will have fun deciding what to buy to build your rifle. If it doesn't shoot all that well, get it rebarreled, it sure helped mine (you can stay in 308). I still need to replace the trigger.

I would recommend a 20" barrel over the 26". Probably more accurate and handles better.

If you get a shooter, you may not have to rebarrel.

As JRob said.....260 or 6.5 are great rounds. However, like a couple other guys said, the Remington 5R, in a .308 would probably fit your bill, or even the .300 WM if you can find one, cause I think they stopped production on the caliber last year, but don't quote me.

When I was looking for a 'nice', under 1500 dollar rifle, that I could hone my skills with, that wouldn't need many, if any upgrades to be a 'good' shooter out of the box, the 5R kept winning out across the board. And really I could have saved a tad bit of cash if I would have gone with the 700P, but I wanted stainless, and the rifling, so I ponied up the extra mulla.

Now keep in mind, I'm no super shooter either, and this was my first, atleast to me,nice long range rifle, and I searched for years before I came to actually buy it. I got mine in the .300 WM, not because bigger is better, but because i'm a horsepower junkie.

For the money though, you really can't beat either one of those rigs....torque it down and start shootin. Not sure about your choice for glass though, never used one. I'd save for a USO, Premier, S n B, or Hensy, oops forgot Nightforce, with there new Reticle choices.

Now that I think about it, there is a Remmy LTR topped with a nightforce, and bipod, in DAMN good condition over in the for sale section right now. That's a total package, right now, ready to go, and I think he only has a couple hundred rounds down it. Might be worth checkin out.

You always need a backup scope. I bought a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9 for $300. It has 80 moa of elevation and will reliably shoot out to 1000 yards. Now that I have a better scope it serves as a backup and a scope that I can put on a new rifle or if I have to have my good scope repaired. Lot's of capable scopes out there for low money but you don't get high speed turret, zero stops and best reticle. But they do work well and can do the job until you get the money to upgrade.

Get the TRG-22. Stay away from custom stuff until you know more. The TRG is an awesome rifle with great re-sale value.

I'm not a fan of IOR scopes: recommend a NF.
