With all do respect to Switch, Whats the alternative? AR-15.com? This is still the best site for practical shooting knowledge. You want a headache, checkout rimfirecentral.com or benchrestcentral.com, some of that is hotter than a Telemundo soap opera.

The changes you lament are, unfortunetly, a sign of the times in the growing world of the internet.

I sell rifle barrels for a living. I have never served, 4F. John Moses Browning never serverd either. But I have the utmost rspect for those who have. I don't post much, only when I feel the need from someone in my industry is required, or I am slacking at work and trying to look busy. But I feel that I have some knowledege and experience that can benefit alot of people here, including acutal snipers, desingated marksmen, rifleman, infantry (active and retired) and competitive shooters.

Compare it to racing. I don't drive, I sell engines. Someone else makes tires, suspension, exhaust, etc.. Then you have Sportcar Club of America. Amateurs driving for fun. Whether you consider it "real" racing or not, they are still a benefit to racing. Drag racing, road racing, circle track, rally, off-road, whatever. Everyone is advanicing the sport. Then there is the guy that just wants the coolest car on the block, whatever that is in his opinion. He may run it or not. But he he is providing sales and profits to the manufacturers. A portion of that is re-invested into R&D which inturn helps the racer.

One suggestion for Lowlight would be a "questions that have been asked thousand times" or better titled "Best of Snipers Hide Forum". Might help Newbies, and would be alot eaiser to link to for grizzled members. (Don't complain unless you have a solution.)

I was going to respond to this thread last night, but due to the fact I thought I was suffering from a concussion, I decided to wait and see if I got better before admitting myself into the hospital and guess what? I'm 100% better after I got some sleep, so here goes with my response.

I have to still go along with the YouTube review I did on this site because even though this site still has it's faults, it's still a decently run site and has gotten a lot better since I first joined. Maybe it was the increase in population or maybe the advent of the ads. Who knows? All I know is that if I have a problem with how this site is run, I know Lowlight has no problem telling me to let the door hit me in the ass on the way out. I don't know why people don't understand that this site is NOT run like some half baked reality show where people who aren't liked are voted off the island. This IS Lowlight's website and guess what? He does NOT need a legit reason to kick you off the site! It don't matter if you're a world famous Sniper with thousands of confirmed kills under your belt or someone like me who's happy to hit a target at 50 yards with an airgun or rimfire. Lowlight is the boss. Bottom line case closed.

Now as far as the "thin skinned" members who have been complaining about being offended, they need to seriously take a day off from posting and have a real close look at the types of members who exist here. This site is not only run by a Marine, but also the majority of members here are either active or retired Military folks, so as you can imagine the humor and language here can be a bit off color at times. I guess maybe I just don't buy into the whole internet tough guy routine because it takes a whole lot to get me to the point where I start fighting back due to the things that get said to me here. No, I'm not saying that to turn this thread into a thread about me, it was just a simple example.

Another thing to take into consideration is the ads that have showed up during the past 2 years or so. They are NOT there just for decorations you know. They are company names that have paid money to have their ads here on all the pages viewed here. Not only does the ads provide financial support to keep this site up and running, but also helps provide for Lowlight and his family and if there's one thing I learned growing up is that you do NOT mess with the way another man makes money for his family. What I'm getting at with this is that if the companies who got their ads running here think that this site is unprofessional in any way, they will have no problem pulling their ads away from this site and that will cause Lowlight to lose money.

I'm not saying that we can't have a little off color fun every now and then, I'm just saying that more common sense needs to be used when it comes to those who seem to come here just for the off color talk. If you are here just for that and Lowlight has no problem with it then neither do I. I can't even imagine the amount of emails and PMs he has to weed through everyday from those who are either thin skinned or don't like a particular member and therefore request them to be banished.

Well, that's pretty much all I have to say in this post so I'll end it by saying thanks Lowlight for keeping this site up and running even though there's an occasional bad or sour apple that rolls out of the barrel. So to speak....

If you end up with a concussion for whatever reason. The one thing they advise you NOT to do is go to sleep........

And, I will throw my opinion in here. Obviously I have not been here as long as others, and I come off dry and brash sometimes. But I love LR shooting, wether is paper, steel or hunting I love to shoot bolt rifles. The first time I picked up a bolt rifle it was around my 13th birthday, thats when I got the bug and when I turned 18 I bought my own. 2 years later I had my first custom/tactical style rifle. Now I have a house full. I enjoy this site a lot. I made a rookie mistake when I first joined posting info for a guy that wanted to sell something and got a 3 day ban but I learned. I read on this site a lot, my iPad's home page is SH. Whenever I have down time from work I sit and read. I throw my comments in here and there but I also believe there is a fine line between helpful, funny, or witty comments. Sometimes seeing the "what barrel do i need" thread 9 times a week gets old quick. Then you get these 15 year old kids who cant even legally purchase a firearm that come on here talking crap because they have mastered the Call Of Duty games.

I get where everyone is coming from. I see Frank's side as well. I along with my Dad run a huge construction company, it's back breaking work to keep everyone happy and in line with our rules. I kind of look at it as the MODS will do what they can, the rest of the community can weed out the weak.

I am going to make a point of not furthering the BS I find here. That's gonna be tough because I should have a degree in BS(Panty 6). How will I do that? Well I hate to admit it but I'm a member of the pussification squad here on SH. I've never been in the military or police and I've never fired my rifle in anger. I'm really a hunter that's had a interest spike in the art or long range shooting and I came to where the pros talk.

With the apologies aside, my humble opinion is that this forum is run as good as any I've been a member of. Some have no mods where the oral diahrrea is unstoppable, while others have self-righteous mods that will strike you down for an opinion that runs counter to theirs. Finally the corporate forums that will NOT allow any critisizm of any products. I haven't found any of those traits here. The forum has mods that will step in if needed without going overboard, and critisizm is allowed and even promoted as long as the poster has had expierence with the product and offers the facts only.

I appreciate this forum, LL, and all those who post infomation and advice. Without you guys I'd be a moron with a stock Ruger .25-06 throwing money down the toilet.

In the past I've refrained from posting about anything that I don't have personal expierence with and tried,and failed at times, to refrain from getting into sreaming matches.
I promise to try harder in the future.

As far as the "pussification" goes, I agree whole-heartedly. But you "old school" grunts have to understand that we as a society are softer than we were 10,20,...50 years ago. The young bucks that come here and cry about being temporarily banned are used to facebook, tweeting, and being "heard" at all times. No need to work for your respect, this society thinks that comes free and is a RIGHT. Unfortunately its just a sample of how things are these days. I'm sure that I'm just as guilty as the next guy.

In closing I just wanted to say that even though you old school guys are disappointed by the direction that this forum has gone don't lose hope. There is a small group here that hopes to gain the right skills and hopefully pass them on to the next generation. This site has changed from a tactical shooting site to some sort of "Internet Man Cave." Or perhaps more accurately, some sort of "Internet Treehouse for Men" where guys feel free to come and vent whatever is on their minds or to post threads on issues that are of no relevance to shooting. They come here because maybe they feel they have no where else to go. I suspect it maybe a crutch of sorts to some.

In the past year I've dealt with more adversity than in all the prior years of my life combined. There were times when I was tempted to say something here but I kept my trap shut because a) this is a tactical shooting site, b) I don't believe in sharing personal problems with guys I've never even met and c)sometimes you just got to gut things out. I've even considered posing a question that asked whether there are different kinds of mental toughness. With the post I guess I've pretty much pre-empted myself on that one.

I don't know...I'm not condemning anyone who has shared personal stuff on here. Or even stuff that's not about shooting. Some people look at this site the way I think people must have looked at the old general stores - places to go to sit around and have a friendly (usually) conversation. I must say though, that some of what's posted on here, in my opinion, must detract from what I think may have been Frank's original vision for the site.

Occasion is I have a very good friend visiting. RJW had a business meeting nearby so we invited him to stop by for a few days for some hospitality in the new digs. We decided that since we have been busting ass on all kinds of work around here to take a little time to enjoy life to it's fullest.


Recipe for French Vanilla Custard Ice Cream and Vanilla Sugar

Ingredients
2 cups half-and-half
2 cups heavy cream
8 large egg yolks
9 ounces vanilla sugar*
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Directions
Place the half-and-half and the heavy cream into a medium saucepan, over medium heat. Bring the mixture just to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and remove from the heat.

In a medium mixing bowl whisk the egg yolks until they lighten in color. Gradually add the sugar and whisk to combine. Temper the cream mixture into the eggs and sugar by gradually adding small amounts, until about a third of the cream mixture has been added. Pour in the remainder and return the entire mixture to the saucepan and place over low heat. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon and reaches 170F. Pour the mixture into a container and allow to sit in an ice bath for 30 minutes. Stir in the vanilla extract. Place the mixture into the refrigerator and once it is cool enough not to form condensation on the lid, cover and store for 4 to 8 hours or until the temperature reaches 40F or below.

Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to the manufacturer's directions. This should take approximately 25 to 90 minutes. Serve as is for soft serve or freeze for another 1 to 4 hours to allow the ice cream to harden.

Vanilla Sugar
4 cups Sugar
2 Vanilla Beans

Open Vanilla Beans and place in sugar. Rub sugar inside of husk to remove the small vanilla seeds. Let sit for two weeks before using

Short Cut: After you rub the seeds out of the bean, remove the husk and stir the sugar/vanilla ben mix with a wire whip for 20 minutes to infuse the sugar by force. Not as strong as waiting two to three weeks, but will work

Mixed Berries
2C Starwberries
1C Blueberries
1C Blackberries

rinse and drain all berries, then slice the strawberries over the others into a bowl. Add a wee pinch of salt and about 2T - 3T Raw Turbinado Organic Sugar

Short Cakes are basically biscuits with lots of extra sugar. We use the recipe in Pillsbury's Best Cook Book or this one works too by Alton Brown. Only difference is mine uses buttermilk

Shortcake
Ingredients
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons shortening
3/4 cup half and half
Melted butter to brush shortcakes
Berries
Ice cream or whipped cream
Directions
Heat oven 450 degrees.


In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Cut in butter and shortening. Mix in half-and-half. Drop by large spoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 15 minutes or until brown. Cool and eat with berries, ice cream and/or whipped cream.

Yeah, hardcore, that's me alright. Military since I was 17, USMC 6077/71, NG12B, went to school to cook, and got a black belt in Tea Kwon Do, joined the Army and they said I was a cook. Somewhere along the way shot a few competitions back in teh day and got a few silver and bronze medals, deployed once or twice, and lived the life of a smart assed motherfucker that spent a lot of his young ass time in unemployment lines. Wrenched a few cars and bikes, made a few boys with a hottie Hawaiian wife, smoke cigars, drink my liquor mostly straight, and talk a huge amount of shit. try to ride a little Sporty now and again(last long ride was 19* in 36" of snow leaving upstate NY in December '09) with a couple saddlebags of high octane, and a back pack full of clothes and tools. Some hardcore, huh?

At least I ain't a pussy with a gun, try to pass on what I learn, and treat everyone with the earned respect they deserve.

I'm not mil and I'm not LE. To busy partying at the age that mattered to make something of myself in either.
That said, the respect for both is there.

I shoot steel and paper and started my journey with practical precison rifle here and learned alot. I shoot competitions that both benefit and are benefitted by the knowledge and skillset of the LE/mil shooters and am appreciative of that privilege.

I fully understand LL's tough act of balancing information exchange in a population of ballbusters with the real fact that professionalism in a commercial market must be maintained.

I too often fall into petty BS with people that don't understand respect and am presently working to change that (I'll save my comments for AceSn1per for the next time I have the opportunity for a face to face with the child). I'll try to stay away from that trap from here out.

I think there's plenty to be gained from military, competitive and outdoorsmen, and that the layers of depth of the "no politics" rule outside direct RKBA rules need to be respected. Many do not consider the reasons Frank pointed out. If you don;t like bikinis or the shout box, there's a "turn on right pane" option in your preferences. If you don't like what I say, please use the ignore button for me.

I do enjoy the entertainment aspect of shooting the breeze and joking with like minded folks, especially since I've been out of work and hate TV and yardwork. The tough part is that online, many can't read sarcasm, or feel righteous about their opinions and aren't up for a discourse about incongruous opinions civilly.

Taking part in the best private source for information and gear going is a privilege and I try to respect that. Some folks don't get the "private" part of that though.......Frank's house, Frank's rules. I apologize for the times past and probably future that I step over that line.

Any way you slice it, this is a great site. Sure, some topics I don't have much of an interest in... but I have also learned some good stuff and met some really good people.

Even before I saw this thread, had been thinking about sending Lowlight a note thanking him for a great forum. Only been here for about 6 months. But am happy to be a member and always work to live up to your high standards.

There is a lot of latent sexual tension boiling just under the surface of this thread.

I'm starting a list titled "People I need to make sure I never find myself with around a late night hunting campfire".

However it is good to see that real men, manly military men, know that it's just as important to work the balls.
