So now, I'm the proud owner of my daughter's Savage 11 Hog Hunter. I need a stock or chassis.

Long story short, she wanted something lighter so I moved her over to one of my AR's and she loves it. I'm saving for a John Hancock from PVA. But until then I'm shooting the Savage. Nothing serious. There have a couple of shooting opportunities down here in Alabama. Alabama Precision rifle is about two hours from here near Carbon Hill, Hard Rock is about the same distance near Auburn. And of course there's the CMP. I don't want to build a race gun out of it but just a solid platform that will give me confidence in the equipment. The tupperware stock from Savage was fine to hunt with but I"d like something better.

The rifle is accurate. It prefers 155 grain projectiles which took some time to find out. I was sure that the 1/10 twist would like something heavier but it doesn't. I finally settled on the Berger 155 VLDH over Varget that are in the .7" range. I think I could shave a bit off of that with a better platform.

Price is definitely a concern. When I was researching the John Hancock, I came across the Kinetic Research Bravo chassis but they do not offer one for a Savage. But price wise it is spot on. $349-$439 is perfect.

Question: Is a DBM necessary for shoot a PRS match? I know I wouldn't need a DBM at an F-Class match or at Hard Rock (I don't think so). And like I said, I'll only shoot at the PRS location once or twice a year for the foreseeable future.

What is out there? I've looked and will probably be exploring the used market based on price alone.

Also, when looking in the used market do I need to stay away from stocks that have been bedded?

Finally, I like the Kinetic Research Stock so much that I'm tempted to trade this rifle (with some cash of course) or sell it and pick up either a Tikka T3, Rem 700 or the Howa 1500.

If you want to shoot prs you’re gonna want a mag. Most stages are from 8-12 rounds each and that’s time limited. Feeding a bottom door or small mag will rob you of points on every stage.

A howa barreled action would probably be the cheapest route to a bravo if you catch it when brownells has a sale on them.

For a stock pick a price point. You can get a Boyds A3-5 called the prairie varmint with an adjustable cheek piece for 190. Send your rifle to CDI for their bottom metal installed and now for 400ish dollars you have an adjustable laminate with AICS mag capacity. Hard to compare being able to order a barrel, bolt head and go gauge and not send out your rifle till the smith has the time to get it done and back.

Sounds like the rifle is chambered in .308 ( I may have missed it ) so any cartridge with a .473" rim dimension that fits in the mag box is fair game for a pre-fit re-barrel without having to swap the bolt head.
I went thru the same dilemma with my 12 LRP, spend money to make it better, CDI Bottom metal vs. chassis, etc.
I bought a Tikka CRT... When the barrel goes kaput, I'll put a "Tikk-Age" setup with a barrel nut on it.

Yes sir, it’s the Alpha 180 Chassis. I admit that it’s nice but that $300 extra is more than I want to spend. I need to get this rifle squared away for the least amount of money so I can start saving for the John Hancock.

I don’t understand why KRG didn’t make the Bravo for Savage actions, since most people that run the Savage rifles are either budget minded or it’s an entry into the sport thing.

IMO you're better off selling the Savage and buying a Howa barreled action plus the KRG chassis as @spife7980 suggested.

As for Savages and easy barrel swaps, there was a time when that was something more or less exclusive to the Savage, but with the advent of Remage barrels and barrel nut solutions for the Tikka it's not really true anymore. As such it makes the Savage a lot less attractive than it used to be as a competition gun because of some of its other less desirable traits. You're extremely limited on trigger and chassis/stock options, the bolt lift tends to be extremely heavy, and when run hard Savages can have issues with feeding and extraction.

If you want to spend a little more than the Howa route, and enjoy DIY projects, a stripped Remington 700 action and a Remage barrel kit might be another way to go. Remington 700 Short action receivers can be had for under $400 (they're $330 at Buds), but by the time you buy a barrel kit and the tools to assemble everything you'll probably be north of $800 before you buy a stock or chassis. Assembly is straightforward and with the proper tools no more difficult than putting together an AR.

Hey Paul, There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Savage rifle. Most people rarely get to the stage of benefitting from a "better" rifle. If you have the Savage then go with it and get your daughter the most trigger time she can get.

We do offer our Element for all models of the Savage actions. You may be able to find a used one for cheap or we offer them new for $595. The nice thing about our chassis is that the LOP is so adjustable that it will fit your daughter through all the years of her shooting no matter her age or size.

I have a new Hog Hunter 308 that shoots great. It shoots consistently sub 1/2 moa after installing a Choate stock, and shot a 4" high x 10" wide 1000 yard 4-shot group last week with it. I've got $600 in it, not counting glass.

I haven't tried the 168's yet, but have had excellent results with the 175gr Sierra Tipped Match Kings over 43.3gr of Varget, in fire formed and neck sized federal brass. My gun shoots best with the bullets seated about .020" off the lands, with is around 2.920" oal with the 175gr TMK'.s

I haven't tired the 175's yet, I ended up with a couple cases of gold medal match in 168 pretty cheap but once I burn through what I've got left I'm switching to 175 for better performance out at 1000.

This is THE solution to a high cap D/M, no mods necessary to factory bottom metal. Dan at Darkeagle has been a good friend of SH since all the way back at our beginnings.

I like his stuff, it's just really expensive for something that only works on savage bottom metal. Granted you spend more going with aftermarket dbm but then you a universal mag styale that works across multiple platforms.
