AE MKIII .308...check
6mm Creedmoor barrel...check
Barrel vise...check
Action wrench...check
Torque wrench...check
Guages...check

Disassemble gun and pull barrel...check
.
.
.....try and slide recoil lug on new barrel.......

NO FUCKING GO.....Dam it!!!!!!

re-assemble 308 barrel and scope and pack up 6mm barrel to send back to manufacture

just to give everyone an idea what how small a measurement bugger'd the whole deal

factory AE barrel 1.064, new barrel 1.068.... no dice

I know the maker will make it right but shit what a downer

yeah either that or centre it up on a faceplate and take the remaining .004" in Dia with the toolpost grinder.
Being that close to finished, and having to send the barrel away for something that minor - would @^%# me off!

opening up the lug would be the easiest but I hate altering a permanent part to fit a part that is designed to ware out and be replaced..... the action and the lug are constants and the barrel is the variable....

what if the next barrel is a little big or .004th under the original would it matter the fit would be .008 under

I know we are talking insanely small numbers but........I liked the days when i was uneducated in such doings, my head is about to explode

...but the major diameter of the tenon threads is a function of the female threads in your receiver, and pitch diameter specifications in the machinery's handbook...

Assuming the barrel was properly machined (and if it screws nicely into the receiver, it probably is), EVERY tenon for that receiver is going to be too big for that recoil lug.

Regardless, it is easy to remove .004" with some emory paper, and wheter you knock a couple thousandths off the crest of the threads on the tenon, or peel a few out of the recoil lug, it isn't going to impact your rifle's potential in the least.

If it were me, I'd find something I could chuck up in my drill that measures a little less than the bore through your recoil lug, then wrap some emory paper around that item, and spend 30 seconds "honing" it... Speaking of which, a brake-cylinder hone would probably do a fine job of this as well.

.004 isn't much...would take you maybe 20 minutes to complete. The only thing I'd be concerned with is the threads not being deep enough.

Barrel lugs are pretty darn cheap in the whole scheme of things when you are that close to being able to shoot it. Open it up a bit. You can probably find that in change laying on the ground by the time you need a new barrel to get a new lug.

Try some factory ammo and see how it closes on that.

Just a small thing & it has been covered before but that barrel is m/c'd to fit an AW not an AE.
The barrel should have a plain land to fit the recoil lug correctly.
