Soft Ammo Carrier

Looking into a ammo wallet/novel/fortress whatever.

Wanting one of a higher round count. 120ish. Currently leaning towards the Cole-Tac ammo novel. But also interested in the CrossTac Ammo Fortress and the WCD ammo carrier. Anyone able to speak on all three or even two of. Give me honest your opinion of them. I’ve seen great reviews for them all. But looking for more of a side by side I guess. I’m also open to other options if you have them to name. Thanks.

Also I know it’s close to 120 but I’m not wanting a pouch to just zip it all up in. If I wanted to do that. There are cheaper options that would work fine. I like the idea of being able to individually hold the rounds

Yeah that’s one of the ones I’m looking at. Mosley trying to get a side by side honest opinion from someone who has it and one of the others.

But do you ever feel like it’s to big. Or cumbersome when you open it?

I just picked up the cole tac novel loaded it with ammo. So far so good. Fits in backpack good and condensed so much better than ammo boxes. Appears to be well made
But i like the walsh one for the tip protector
Woulda ordered one of these had i known about them

The TAB Gear SAC can hold 120+ of 308 I have 2 and use them all the time. Great option.

Yeah last weekend I had 115 6.5CM in the SAC with plenty of room left. 3 AX mags for 145 total. I have been trying to streamline my gear and the SAC delivers.

I like the coletac novel, straight and to the point. I also like that it is a little flexible when loaded so it packs nicely. Really hard to imagine going back to carrying ammo in boxes or bags.

It comfortably holds more than advertised. I've stuffed 150 .308s in mine and it was maxed out. There is a lot more room with 6.5mm and 6mm caliber rounds. The SAC is great, and even has a divider for fired brass.

I second the TAB SAC. Moved to it after using the Cole Tac ammo book. Both are great products but I just like the ease of grabbing the loose ammo from the SAC. Loose carrying your ammo will not hurt it.

If your are cheap, these are very effective. Great for mags, especially small .22 ones. Work great for the loose ammo. And yes, I also have the SAC and a 30 round wallet.

Its a bag that has a 10 loop outer thing, on the inside its got a divider so as you shoot your cases you stuff the empty ones on the other side of the divider. The divider is just a 3rd wall of the same cloth so its flexible, adjusts to the changing volumes and as mentioned lays completely flat when empty (and not stuffed with spent cases).

I have two of the SAC silent ammo carriers that I use for matches. One bag holds more then enough for a single match day - unless you are shooting .300NM at PRS matches...

It works great, and it would be my recommendation.

I use it still, I have different bags, one I repurposed from my back packing/hunting days is a Kifaru bag, the TAB SAC, the 30 round wallet and the Husky ones. In my opinion, the Husky ones are great for loose ammo and smaller mags. I like the wallet for something like a 20 round 1k match as I would not shoot more than 10 sighters. It's also good for taking extra rounds mags don't hold or when organizing a load development set.
Years ago, a garage court member was making brass/utility bags from the bottoms of woodland BDU's. He would cut at the knee are, sew that closed and sew in a drawstring with a slider from old ALICE packs. It basically looks like a diving bag.

I’m going to say cole tac all the way! I have one per rifle in differnt colors, I’m the king of bringing the wrong ammo to the range and it has solved all my issues. My only gripe is, when they were 80 round novels they had a clear sheet thing to label them the 120’s don’t. But I’ve emailed him and he said he would sew a leather caliber label on them for cheaper than it costs to ship them both ways. Cole tac also every so often does a garage sale, where they sell returns etc. follow them on social media. I lucked out and got two more novels a month ago for right at 100$

I don't use anything with soft side. Had a bunch of my ammo at a two day match crushed in the back of a vehicle. All of it was stored in the SAC and all but 40 rounds were useless.


I just bought the Walsh Custom Defense ammo holder. Awesome quality. It has hard sides. The loops are raised rather than flat like on the Cole-Tac, this makes it much easier to get brass back into the loops.

3 vinyl bank deposit bags from Office Depot will run you less than 20 dollars. Use 1 for loaded ammo and drop the empties in another. No multi-cam or molle, but they get the job done...

After shooting for a week next to a guy at Rifles Only who was using a Walsh Ammo binder, I bought one. It's great and I like when shooting you can just fold one side out or down.

It beat the hell out out me trying to keep up with 6 or 7 boxes in my bag, partials, etc.

Armageddon offering them is going to let them take off like a rocket ship.

The walsh seems pretty purposely built and large for 120 rounds, and I'm wondering if it's just too big and bulky. I don't know if I'm that OCD about the tips of my ammo. Cole-Tac looks pretty promising but pretty floppy. I saw that TAB has a bullet binder that holds 40 rounds, and @softcock also makes something similar.

Instead of having 1 big walsh, I was thinking maybe 3-4 bullet binders or softcock's thing. Anyone have any new thoughts on this subject?

Then depending on 1 day or 2 day match I can carry accordingly.

I tried out the Walsh for a bit and went back to the Armageddon Gear 40/40. Starting off the day with 80 rounds in that and 5 loaded mags (130 total) gives me enough for a full day at almost any PRS match I have been to, and the 40/40 is pretty compact for the amount of ammo it holds.

It was mentioned at the beginning and I think it gets overlooked but the crosstac ammo fortress is very well thought-out and well built. I recently ran one for a two day match and won’t go back to another ammo carrier.

I have a cole tac novel for every caliber I shoot. If you call or email or even hit him up on Instagram the guy he’ll make a custom tag for you. I had a 6br built for my wife and he made a leather “tooled” tag that says her name and 6br on it. No extra charge. Cole tac has my business for life on customer service alone. I’d also buy one of those brass bags too. Putting empty’s back in the novel sucks. Also if you shoot small guys like br based cartridges just buy the regular sized novel. The little guy is kinda cramped. Pro tip..... Buy it from brownells with a coupon if you’re not color picky. You can get them for 80$ shipped

Walsh 80 round is the perfect size coupled with a couple loaded magazines your pretty much set. Quality is amazing and so is there customer service.

I tried the WCD units and while nice, took up too much room and was more hassle to deal with loading and unloading it. Cole tac units are nice but also seem overly "stuffed" when loaded up and same issue of take too long to load and unload. I keep going back to the TAB gear SAC for match use. Fill one side with ammo I need, dump empties in the other after a stage, zip close, done. I just picked up a couple ammo bags to try from Fehu Outdoors to try out as well. Similar split pocket design pouch like the SAC but with a HD mesh and couple different sizes.

I have them up on the website now. I have been using one of the brass/ammo bags for my loaded ammo still and then the all mesh bag is nice as I can just have anyone who picks up my brass toss it in the bag on my pack while my hands are still full.

I was about to order one, but the way I run my pack, I was thinking of looking at a more vertical design so things don't fall out with someone unzipping my bag and throwing brass in.
